Traveling kicking camp hits DSHS By Mike Dowty DENHAM SPRINGS Follow the football all the way with your belly button. Anyone who has noticed the odd posture of a placekicker might wonder what he is thinking. Does he really believe that all that body language after the kick will influence the flight of the ball? The short answer is yes, say the in- structors at Kohl s Professional KickingPunting-Snapping Camps. The approach and follow through, done consistently, are vital to success. Consistency, as a matter of fact, is what separates kickers who make it at the highest levels from their competition. The belly button principle is a reflection of that. Sunday, professional kickers brought their tricks of the trade to Denham Springs High School for 21 young kickers of junior high to high school age eager to learn their secrets. Among them were former Alabama and current Green Bay Packers punter Cody Mandell, an Acadiana High School product. All the way from Australia came Joe Gardener, a professional rugby player for the Portu- FOOTBALL The all-or-nothing position: Kickers t is not uncommon to hear phrases directed at kickers that seem almost unfair. You had one job. You let the whole team down. That s a hefty burden to bear for one player on a team that can field anywhere from 30 people to over 100. No other player on the team is ever truly envious of the kicking position. Sometimes you give the kicker a hard I time, sure, but in the end there are few on the field with more pressure. If a quarterback gets told he had a bad game, well, that guy must have had a really bad game. He brought that on himself. A kicker? It takes one missed kick to have a bad game. You haven t stepped on the field once that entire contest. Now, down by 2 and watching the final seconds tick away, its 4th and forever from the 25, and Mr. Kicker has got to nail this 42 yard field goal to win the game. The kick sails wide right. It doesn t matter that the offense couldn t get him closer, or the defense couldn t stop the other team from scoring. The blame falls on the kicker there, almost always. One of my good friends in college was our kicker. He experienced that same situation, got the same butt-chewing after, and yet continued on about his day after the game as if nothing had happened. Why? He knew about that situation well before it came up. He learned about it at a camp. So fans, ease up on the kickers, they re a safety valve, the last line of offense. If you put the game on the shoulders of one person, after he hasn t seen the field all game except extra points, you deserve whatever outcome results. And for those of you who want to be kickers in football, remember, it s a thankless job and you ve got to be cold. However, don t forget, some of us understand your plight and we are rooting for you, regardless. McHugh David is sports editor for the News and a former high school and college football player. 6 I C6 THE LIVINGSTON PARISH NEWS THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2015 Kohl s molds fundamentals to unique bodies From C1 Fundamentally and mechanically I got a lot of good work in, said Denham Springs Jr. High incoming 7th grader Cameron Beall. Head down, chest up and swing through the ball. Honestly, I felt like I got the most out of punting. I took some good stuff from that. While Beall has been to three camps in the past year, Sunday s the first to utilize the facilities at Denham Springs High School. He is counting on the tutelage to help him earn a spot as kicker for his junior high Yellow Jackets. Mandell can attest to the effectiveness of such instruction. He attended a Kohl s camp when he was a high school sophomore, using it to develop into a star at Acadiana High School, then Alabama and, with any luck, to earn a roster spot this year with the Green Bay Packers. You come to these camps with a natural leg and then you are subjected to informa- Emotion for kickers is kind of bad. You don t want to get too high or too low. Morgan Lindberry Placekicker tion overload, Mandell said. There s so much, you have to write it down or you ll never remember it. Mandell s experience came in Pearland, Texas, outside of Houston, home to New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morestead. What that camp taught him was the secret of repeatability. Kickers must learn the correct fundamental skills, adapt them to their own unique bodies, then approach every kick the same way. Whether the score is 62-0 or the outcome of the game is on the line, a film breakdown after any kick should look the same. It s easier said than done. It takes hours of practice, study and conditioning. Mandell said he visualizes success before every kick. A positive mental attitude is huge. Gardener added that a little amne- Head down, chest up and swing through the ball. Honestly, I felt like I got the most out of punting. I took some good stuff from that. Cameron Beall DS Junior High 7th grader sia goes a long way, whether that last kick was thing of beauty or something for a blooper reel. You need to forget what you ve done six seconds afterward, Gardener said. Another trait all good kickers have is ice water in their veins. Emotion for kickers is kind of bad, Lindberry said. You don t want to get too high or too low. Mandell applied that principle during kicking drills right after one of the campers boomed a great punt, then followed with a wobbler. Why? Because he was pumped up after the first kick and trying to kill the ball to do even better for his second. Mandell said all talented kickers will get off a spectacular kick from time to time, but the best ones distinguish themselves because their B kicks are not that bad. Success is a consequence of focus and concentration. The Kohl s camps offer all kinds of drills to prepare a kicker, even one with distractions to attempt to unnerve him before the kick. The guy who is the most confident and consistent over time will get the job, he preaches. In addition to indoor film sessions and outdoor drills, instructors also offer the option of working one-on-one with prospects, shooting video of their kicks and breaking it down. Gardner said camps founder Jamie Kohl has broken down film on hundreds of the best kickers in professional and college football to distill the traits they all have in common. A recordholder at Iowa State and former Seattle MIKE DOWTY THE NEWS Above, instructor Joe Gardner, a professional rugby player from Australia and former college football punter, goes over film instruction for 21 youths attending a day-long Kohl s kicking camp at Yellow Jacket Stadium Sunday. At right, Gardner videos kickers to break down and correct their form at the end of the camp. Below right, Instructor Cody Mandell explains to a participant how to shake hands with the football arriving to be punted. Mandell, a former Alabama kicker who has signed with the Green Bay Packers, teaches technique as part of the Kohl s Kicking Camps conducted at campuses across America. Seahawks, he founded the largest and most respected organization in America for training and evaluating young kicking talent. More than 80 percent of Division I college kickers have attended a Kohl s camp, as have half of active NFL kickers. The 16-yearold organization has trained and or placed 800 college kickers, punters and deep snappers over the past three years. Perhaps the next one will be taking the field at Denham Springs High School soon. The guy who is the most confident and consistent over time will get the job.
