The offense scattered just five hits and the defense committed three errors in the defeat. Right-hander Micah Miniard made his first start of the season and allowed four earned runs on three hits in four innings, walking five. He was lifted in the fifth inning after being unable to record an out, and Luis Jimenez allowed two inherited runs to score. The Astros scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to fuel their way to the series win. PITCHING, PITCHING, PITCHING: Through six games in 2018, the Hillcats pitching staff ranks near the bottom of the Carolina League. Lynchburg pitchers have a combined ERA of 4.50, which is second-worst in the league ahead of only Myrtle Beach (4.68). Additionally, the Hillcats have walked the second-most in the league, issuing 26 free passes. Lynchburg has also surrendered 28 hits, which ranks second-most. BASHIN BROOKS: Hillcats outfielder Trenton Brooks is off to a good start offensively. The left-handed hitter is 4-for-9 to open up the year. The former two-way player in college looks to have a breakout year after being sidelined with an injury last season. NO RUNS FOR YOU: Through five games this season, the Hillcats already have two shutouts, tied for the most in the Carolina League. The Hillcats have also been shutout once. Three of their six games so far in 2018 have resulted in either Lynchburg shutting out their opponent or being shutout. Lynchburg has also scored just ten runs, the fewest of any team in the league, as they have struck out 65 times, which is the most in the Carolina League IN REVIEW: The Hillcats enjoyed a dominant 2017 campaign en route to a league championship. Lynchburg racked up a league best 87 wins overall, capturing the Northern Division title in both the first and second half of the season. They defeated the Frederick Keys, 2-1, in the Divisional Series. Lynchburg excelled on both sides of the ball throughout the entire season in the midst of their championship run. The Hillcats pitching staff finished with the league s best team ERA (3.21) and walked the fewest batters (365). On the offensive side, Lynchburg tallied the third-best team batting average in the Carolina League (.258), finished with the second-most RBIs (577), runs (645), doubles (262) and slugging (.395). EIGHT IS GREAT: Lynchburg captured its 8th Carolina League Championship last season, and first since The Hillcats have the second most titles of any Carolina League franchise, trailing only Winston-Salem with 11. TOP-30 IN LYNCHBURG: Conner Capel (No. 12), Sam Hentges (No. 17), Logan Ice (No. 21), and Mitch Longo (No. 27) are all Hillcats players that are ranked by the Indians on their Top-30 prospect list. Capel, an outfielder, batted.246 with 22 HR and 61 RBI in 119 games for the Single-A Lake County Captains last season. He was drafted by the Tribe in the 5th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. Hentges, a left-hander, missed the majority of last season while he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He appeared in 11 total games (all starts) and went 0-4 with a 3.23 ERA between the AZL Indians and short-season Mahoning Valley. Hentges struck out 41 in 30.2 IP, and was drafted by the Indians in the 4th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Ice, a catcher, spent last season with Lake County and hit.228 with 11 HR and 42 RBI in 93 games. He was selected by Cleveland with the 72nd overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. Longo, an outfielder, battled injuries last season and appeared in just 60 games. While he was healthy, he hit a combined.376 with 4 HR and 28 RBI between Lake County and Lynchburg. POWER SURGE COMING?: For a team that finished in the middle of the pack in home runs in 2017, the Hillcats could be getting a power boost in 18. Conner Capel, 20, blasted 22 long balls for Lake County last season (third-most in the Midwest League), and Emmanuel Tapia, a 22-year-old first baseman, led the Captains with 29 homers, which led the league. Both players figure to play key roles for the Lynchburg Hillcats this season, with Capel at the top of the order and Tapia in the middle. HILLCATS COACHING STAFF Rouglas Odor Manager (1st Season) Career Record: Odor is entering his 18th year coaching in the Indians organization. He played in the minor leagues for the Indians & Brewers from Odor brings a decade of skipper experience to Lynchburg. He led San Felipe in the Venezuelan Summer League for two seasons from , the Burlington Indians for four seasons from , the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for two years from and the Gulf Coast League Indians for two campaigns from He spent the past three seasons as the hitting coach for the Columbus Clippers, Cleveland s Triple-A affiliate. Tony Arnold Pitching Coach (2nd season) 26th overall Arnold returns to Lynchburg after serving as the pitching coach for the Hillcats in The former right-handed pitcher played collegiately at the University of Texas and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round in the 1981 MLB Draft. The El Paso, Texas native played in parts of two MLB with the Orioles in 1986 and Arnold has coached in the Indians organization since 1992 and most recently was the pitching coach of the Akron Rubber- Ducks, Cleveland s Double-A affiliate, for the past two seasons. Justin Toole Hitting Coach (1st season) 3rd overall 2018 marks Toole s first year on Lynchburg s coaching staff and third in the Indians organization. The former infielder played in parts of seven minor league seasons with Cleveland from , reaching Triple-A Columbus. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native worked as the hitting coach last year for Single-A Lake County.
