National Development Team set to toe the line at the Tour de l Avenir 5 Is Donny Robinson s win in Beijing a sign of what s to come next summer? U.S. athletes get a look at the BMX track and Road course in Beijing and learn what it ll take to perform well there next summer. page 2 Arielle Martin takes a run on the BMX track at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs during USA Cycling s BMX Camp. 2 Page 2 U.S. riders preview Beijing s BMX track and road course Donny Robinson wins Olympic test run; bolsters number-one world ranking If besting an all-star field of Olympic hopefuls in a pre-olympic year is any indication of things to come, then it looks like BMX superstar Donny Robinson will be in pretty good shape as the Beijing Games draw near. The Napa, Calif. rider didn t just beat the world s best BMX racers this month. He beat them at the official BMX Olympic test event on the same track set to host the sport s Olympic debut. The event, which also served as round two of the 2007 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup, featured the best riders from 25 nations in the only worldclass event scheduled for the track until the 2008 Olympics. Competition on the new track gave the U.S. delegation the opportunity to see what it will take to perform well there next summer. You really have to be a finess rider and hit all the rhythm straight-aways consistently. It takes an awesome rider just to get around this track and this one is the biggest that we ve ridden, Robinson noted. Twelve other Americans contested the elite men s contest in China, showing the world yet again why the U.S. is ranked above all other nations in elite men s BMX. Three of the twelve join Robinson in the top tier of U.S. Olympic hopefuls: Mike Day, Kyle Bennett, and Randy Stumpfhauser. Donny Robinson: Currently number-one in the world, Robinson won the overall 2006 Supercross World Cup Series and has enjoyed a stellar 2007 season. After his quarterfinal elimination at Worlds last month, he rebounded with a significant victory in Beijing. Mike Day: The top-ranked rider in the 2007 USA Cycling Elite Men s BMX rankings, Day is currently third in the world. He claimed the top seed in Beijing s qualification round before advancing to the event s semifinals. Kyle Bennett: After capturing world titles in 2002 and 2003, Kyle Bennett re-emerged in 2007 and rode to a third career BMX world title. In Beijing, he earned second seed before advancing to the semifinals. Randy Stumpfhauser: The third-ranked rider in the nation for 2007, Stumpy earned bronze at last month s UCI BMX World Championships. He also has four UCI Cruiser world titles to his name which he earned consecutively between 2002 and Kintner strongest U.S. woman in Beijing Jill Kintner was the top U.S. woman, riding to fifth place after lining up as the only American in the finals. Joining her in China were two other top female contenders for the 2008 Olympic squad: Amanda Geving and Kim Hayashi. Jill Kintner: 1997 UCI BMX World Champion Jill Kintner split her 2007 season between BMX and Mountain Bike events making her success in both disciplines all the more impressive. She won the 2005 and 2006 UCI 4-Cross world titles and will be fighting for a third in Scotland this week. Amanda Geving: Currently tied for the number-one spot in the UCI s junior women s rankings, Amanda Geving scored a cruiser class world title in 2006 and was a favorite for the 20 title in 2007 before a midrace crash derailed her hopes. Kim Hayashi: Number-one in the 2007 USA Cycling Elite Women s BMX rankings, Kim Hayashi is currently the highest-ranked American woman in the world sitting in tenth overall. Krystal Hime Although she didn t compete in Beijing, Krystal Hime is considered a contender to make the 2008 Olympic squad. After capturing the national title at the inaugural USA Cycling Elite BMX National Championships, she rode to fourth place in the Pan American Games this summer. Top: As the number-one ranked rider in the world, Donny Robinson represents the U.S. best chance for a BMX medal in Beijing. Center left: 1997 BMX world champ and 2-time mountain bike world champ Jill Kintner will lead the race to make the women s squad. Center Right: With four world titles to his name and a 2007 World Championship bronze, Randy Stumpfhauser is one of the strongest Olympic hopefuls. Bottom: Kyle Bennett proved that he has what it takes to be an Olympian when he raced his way to the 2007 world title in the 20 Olympic BMX discipline.

Page 3 Cover story continued... Six Americans previewed Beijing s road race and time trial course. With the top U.S. Olympic hopefuls racing for their pro teams in Europe and North America, USA Cycling fielded a squad of up-and-coming athletes for the 174-kilometer Good Luck Beijing Road Cycling International Invitational. The U.S. squad included Jon Garcia (Berkeley, Calif./ BMC), Scott Nydam (Sebastapool, Calif./BMC), Nathan Miller (Fairfield, Calif./BMC), Sheldon Deeny (Fort Collins, Colo./VMG Racing), Zak Grabowski (Lafayatte, Colo./VMG Racing) and Andy Guptill (Hannacroix, N.Y./Colavita-Sutter Home). The priority for the U.S. delegation was to gain perspective of the course based on athletes and team officials feedback. The consensus is that the road race will be one of the hardest in Olympic history. The one thing about the course is that there is no opportunity for recovery, said Nydam after placing 12th. On the final circuits you re keeping pressure on the pedals the whole time, even on the descent going into a headwind. It s definitely not easy. In 2008, the women s peloton will race a total of kilometers. According to Jim Miller, USA Cycling s Director of Endurance programs, the selective course should work to the advantage of both the U.S. men s and women s squads. I think it s a good course for the team that we ll have coming to Beijing next year, Miller said. It s something that plays into our women s style of racing a lot more than Sydney or Athens probably did. Following the road race, Nydam and Garcia contested the 23.8-kilometer time trial course. Nydam was the top U.S. finisher in 14th place, 3:33 off the winning pace, while Garcia finished in 20th. Another factor that often determines road race and time trial outcomes is the safety conditions on the course, a factor which Nydam said is second to none. It s the safest course imaginable in my opinion. The pavement is smooth the entire way and the corners were wide. USA Cycling sent six young riders to preview the Olympic road and time trial courses this month. 5 Page 5 National Development Team set for Tour de l Avenir Six U.S. riders head to France for the prestigious 10-day stage race Often referred to as the younger brother of the Tour de France, the Tour de l Avenir or Tour of the Future is the most prestigious event in the world for young elite riders. The USA Cycling National Development Team wasn t invited to compete in 2006, but the new UCI Nations Cup selection process guaranteed the U.S. riders a spot for Left: 2006 Junior National Criterium Champion Peter Salon is one of the six riders who will represent the USA Cycling National Development Team at the Tour de l Avenir. Center: National Team Director Noel Dejonckheere discusses race strategy with USA National Team members prior to Ronde de l Isard. Right: Tejay Van Garderen is a first-year U23 rider and will toe the line for the final Nations Cup event after an extraordinary season that saw him lead the USA Cycling National Development Team to 7th place overall at the Tour des pays Haut Savoie. The squad secured its place on the l Avenir start line with a 19th-place overall team ranking in the 2007 Nations Cup calendar. The Nations Cup is a new UCI series specifically for U23 men that just debuted this year with 22 national teams. The six-member U.S. contingent will be made up of Slipstream Chipotle and VMG riders, with five out of the six having raced and trained with USA Cycling s Belgium-based national team program. Toeing the line for the event s first stage on September 6, a kilometer trek around the Isle of Belle-Île-en-Mer will be: Tejay Van Garderen (Fort Collins, Colo.), Peter Salon (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Chris Barton (Ojai, Calif.), Taylor Tolleson (Boulder, Colo.), Craig Lewis (Greenville, S.C.), and Tom Peterson (Durango, Colo.) The U.S. will face the other 22 national teams also selected based on strong Nations Cup performances. After the prestigious opening stage, riders will contest eight other circuit races and an individual time trial for a total of 1,435 kilometers of racing. The event ends on September 15 in Saint-Flour where 133,975 Euros in prize money will be awarded. We have three first year guys (19-year-old riders) starting, so it will be very hard for them compared to a 22-year-old, says Noel Dejonckheere, director of USA Cycling s Belgium-based national team program. I hope we have several top-10 finishes in the stages and I hope for an individual top-10 in the overall. Traditionally one of the biggest races for young riders and up-andcoming pros, the Tour de l Avenir has served as a showcase for future champions but in recent history has been held for riders under age 26. The 44th edition next month marks the first time in 27 years that the event has been reserved solely for riders under 23 years of age. When I rode l Avenir, it was a pro-am event and it was two weeks long. remembered American cycling legend Davis Phinney. In those days, he went on. It was one of the few races where we got to go up against the pros, which was an eye-opening experience. I find it fitting that the race has gone back to a national team format with the U23s. In my day, riding well in the l'avenir was a direct path to the big leagues, and you still see that happening today. Stay tuned to for updates on the team.

Page 6 Athlete Profile: Michael Blatchford 07 Continental Champ hits the road to Beijing From his 2004 breakthrough season to his 2007 continental title, Michael Blatchford has raced his bike with a simple goal: to be the best he can be. If that gets me a medal great, if not, that's ok too as long as I achieved the pinnacle of my potential, he says. It is with this attitude that the 21-year-old has risen to the top levels of his sport and become a strong favorite to represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games next summer. The 2007 track calendar was full of important accomplishments for Michael most notably the Continental title he picked up in May when he won sprint gold at the Pan American Championships in Venezuela. The young Olympic hopeful went on to claim second, third, and fourth places at three Italian Grand Prix events. Then, he added a second-place Grand Prix Barcelona sprint effort to his long list of accolades. By the time the track season ended, his resume was more impressive than most riders his age. But then again, winning big at an early age isn t anything new to Michael. He was only eighteen in 2004 when he bested two former Olympians in the sprint at the USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships. As the first junior to ever win an elite national title track, he was immediately launched into the spotlight as the nation s new super sprinter. Then in 2006, he made his way onto the World Cup podium with a third-place sprint effort among an international field in L.A. the first time since 2003 that an American had advanced that far in a World Cup. Adding the 2007 continental title to his list of accomplishments, Michael s staying on track as one of the more serious hopefuls to represent the U.S. on the velodrome in Beijing. Michael s been rising through the ranks since age 13 when he first discovered the L.A. track that hosted cyclists during the 1984 Olympic Games, the track that has since been recreated as the ADT Event Center Velodrome. So it makes sense for Michael to seem so at home during world-class competition Now, with Beijing on his mind Michael is planning to spend the season working toward his Olympic dream. I plan on making waves at the World Cups this season, he said. Other goals for the upcoming season include To find consistent results in the top ten with the goal of adding more medals to my collection and to represent the U.S. with dignity and honor. As a resident athlete of the Olympic Training Center, Michael s got a busy schedule, but he never loses sight of what s really important. The success I've had has been great, but when you see the world as it is, you realize the medal you've just won is a fleeting trophy, he explained. Sweet for a moment, but ultimately it is the lessons you learn and life you live that you will find beneficial and be remembered by. The super sprinter makes a real effort to give back to the Colorado Springs community. From assisting with Boy Scout Bike Rodeo helmet fittings to working as an audio engineer for children s musical productions and from visiting with Children s Hospital patients to befriending disabled veterans and everything in between, Michael has definitely made his mark. Stay tuned to to follow his progress toward making the Olympic team next year. Top: Michael celebrates on the podium in 2007 after winning the continental sprint title. Middle: 2006 saw Michael ride his way onto the World Cup podium in L.A. Bottom: En route to becoming the 2004 elite national sprint title as a junior rider.

Page 7 BYRDS lead the way in junior development efforts Idaho junior club dedicated to continuous growth and development It wasn t long after its 2002 founding that the Boise Young Rider Development Squad (BYRDS) started garnering attention for its outstanding junior development efforts. The two-time USA Cycling High School Club of the Year is continuously developing new ways to better serve its young members. Read on to learn what steps this Idaho-based club has taken in 2007 to help its juniors develop their skills, practice their tactics, and improve their race results. The Idaho club grew its membership from ten juniors in 2002 to more than 100 riders in 2007 ranging in age from six to eighteen. It s not just the junior membership base that s getting bigger though. The BYRDS has also been successful in getting the juniors families involved in the sport. When it comes to growing in numbers, the BYRDS certainly benefits from its visibility in the local community. It s hard not to notice 40, 50, or even 60 youths pedaling through a park or around a local charity event. The club s local presence keeps the public interested, and that interest keeps the BYRDS growing steadily. We have weekly rides and clinics from January through October specifically for juniors., BYRDS president Doug Tobin said. Parents are also invited to attend and participate in the rides. This helps promote cycling as a family sport. After two consecutive years being named USA Cycling High School Club of the Year (2005 and 2006), the BYRDS have no intention of slowing down. With another significant initiative introduced in 2007, the club continues to grow as a role model for junior development. Through additional racing experience, training, and coaching, the club s new Eagles/Falcons program gives interested riders the opportunity to turn a two-wheeled hobby into a competitive career. These riders are also exposed to the numerous demands faced by traveling athletes. The program is designed to provide a coach for Eagles/Falcons members developing annual training plans, weekly training schedules, weekly classroom and educational sessions, and an overall infrastructure that allows them the opportunity to attend local, regional, and national competitive events, Tobin explained. Encouraged by the program s growth opportunities, the 16 Eagles/ Falcons riders earned 14 podium finishes at the Sea Otter Classic last spring, seven USA Cycling Junior National Championship medals on both the road and pavement this summer, and several strong performances in senior-level category 2 and 3 events. Sixteen-year-old BYRDS mountain biker Brady Adams joined the squad three years ago and now is reaping the benefits of the Eagle/Falcon program s disciplined environment. He compares the one-on-one-training to having a personal coach. The coach sets training plans. This year I m not racing as much but am getting more of a base fitness and doing more back country riding, Brady explained. I really like the way it has worked out. My fitness kept on getting better and better.

Page 8 BYRDS continued... BYRDS is completely about fun, Brady said, noting that the coaches stress the importance of fun over results. It s fun to celebrate when you have a good race result but it s all about having fun Election Results This month, 1,617 USA Cycling members cast 2,471 votes to elect six individuals as Trustees to various USA Cycling Association Boards. The seats filled include the Organizer and Industry positions on the NORBA (mountain biking) Board of Trustees, Eastern and Western Section positions on the USCF (road, track & cyclo-cross) Board of Trustees and two At-Large seats on the NCCA (collegiate cycling) Board of Trustees. There were no elections in 2007 for the BMXA or USPRO associations of USA Cycling. Left: year-old BYRDS riders race in stage two at the 2007 Sea Otter Classic. Right: Brady Adams, shown above in the Sea Otter mountain bike contest, has followed a training program in 2007 specially designed by BYRDS coaches to increase his fitness levels. Photo courtesy of Brady Adams. With improved fitness levels, Brady now enjoys the challenge of longer rides, and hits the trails for seven or eight hours at a time. The BYRDS one-on-one coaching has also paid off for sixteen-year-old road racer Mikayla Lyman. The coaches are really supportive and know what they are doing. They also make sure that when something disappointing happens, we don t focus on it but find the positive instead was her third season as a BYRDS rider and her progress definitely shows with results like a circuit race win at the Sea Otter Classic and a ninth-place road race effort at the USA Cycling Junior National Championships. The experience Mikayla has gotten through BYRDS not only helps her as a cyclist, but in other parts of life as well. The confidence I gained racing last year gave me the guts to try out for varsity choir and other things, she said. I went from a slow Sunday drive rider to a confident racer. After three year with the BYRDS, Mikayla s goals for the future now include winning a junior national title and then embarking on a collegiate racing career. What has been very humbling, and rewarding about this program is that young people are interested in the sport of cycling, says Tobin. They want to ride, learn about the sport, and in many cases develop into competitive cyclists. And so through another important change in 2007, the BYRDS keep striving to help these riders develop into competitive cyclists. This year's edition of the annual BYRDS stage race saw an additional two stages for and year-old riders. Now a four-day, five-stage event for the older juniors, the stage race presents more challenges while giving the riders additional opportunities to practice their race strategies and tactics. It s a lot of hard work, but running the BYRDS program is well worth it for Doug Tobin. At the end of a long hard day I have young riders ask me what ride do we plan to do tomorrow? At the end of the season in October, they ask, When can we start training again? One of the best results is that the young riders like the program. NORBA (Mountain Bike) Lisa Nye-Salladin (Kerryville, Texas) retained her seat on the NORBA Board after running unopposed as an Organizer Trustee. She received 357 votes. Incumbent Gary Fisher (San Anselmo, Calif.) was re-elected to the Industry position with 279 votes over runner-up Steve Marshall (Encino, Calif.), who garnered 154. USCF (Road, Track & Cyclo-cross) With 223 votes in the Western Section, Wayne Stetina (Mission Viejo, Calif.) ran unopposed and was re-elected to the USCF Board of Trustees. In the Eastern Section, Dave Miller (Bethlehem, Pa.) received 451 votes to win the election over incumbent Mike Fraysee of Glen Spey, N.Y. (290) and Michael Norton of Monson, Mass. (203). NCCA (Collegiate) Sarah Uhl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Nathan Drake (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) were as elected to the National Collegiate Cycling Association Board of Trustees as At-Large Trustees. Uhl received 137 votes and Drake collected 121 to eclipse the totals of other candidates. "On behalf of USA Cycling, I would like to congratulate the election winners, welcome the new Trustees and welcome back the returning incumbents," said Steve Johnson, USA Cycling chief executive officer. "I also wish to extend a collective thank you to all USA Cycling members who participated in this year's election and your continued dedication to both the sport of cycling and the political process which governs it in the United States."
