5 Did you know? Regular brisk walking improves the performance of your heart, lungs and circulation. It can also lower your blood pressure. And it can reduce your risk of strokes, as well as the UK s biggest killer - heart disease. Walking at any pace will help you to manage your weight, reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of some cancers (inactive people are more likely to develop colon, breast and lung cancer). Walking will improve the flexibility and strength of your joints, muscles and bones too - and it ll reduce the risk of osteoporosis. source: Further information For planning walking routes for everyday journeys or recreational purposes a series of digital resources are available, names and details of these sites are listed below: Surrey Health Group The Ramblers Association Usually on a Sunday and Tuesday mornings. 13 Travel by car Car sharing You can cut air pollution by sharing your car with a neighbour. You can also half your journey cost by registering as a member of a car share database. It works whether you have a car or not meaning you are able to travel either as a driver, or by joining someone else as a passenger. Car sharing is a great way of travelling to work or further afield, to destinations where public transport isn t available, and it helps to cut congestion. To find out more about car sharing opportunities available in your area visit the following websites or download the apps which are available on ios and Android phones. Driving > Lift sharing Surrey Liftshare Why Surrey Liftshare? Join for free and find drivers and passengers to share with Save money by sharing travel costs Reduce the stress of driving by sharing with great people Smarter Driving Adopting smarter driving techniques can help to save fuel and save money. They will also make you a safer driver and reduce wear and tear on your car. The main techniques include checking your revs aren t too high, watching your speed, checking your tyres are pumped up and using air conditioning sparingly. Other ways to perform smarter driving include buying a fuel efficient car such as a hybrid or electric vehicle. However, the main way to save fuel and money is by using your car less through walking, cycling and taking public transport, or car-sharing. More information can be found at: Eco-driving Advice 13
14 Upper Longcross Travel Plan This Travel Choices brochure has been prepared by WSP on behalf of Crest Nicholson. Many Upper Longcross residents make healthier, greener, cheaper, more sustainable choices than driving their car alone. We want all residents to know what travel options are available to them too. To monitor the success of the travel options and the information we ve provided, travel plan monitoring will be undertaken periodically. The monitoring will include resident questionnaires, so look out for further information. A summary of results will be provided to residents via the website.
