1 This Travel Information Pack has been prepared as part of Barratt Homes' commitment to minimise the impact of new development on the environment and to create sustainable communities. The aim of this pack is to inform you of how to make sustainable travel choices to and from St Mary's park. It contains information on how to access key local facilities by sustainable means of transport and how to realise the benefits linked to sustainable travel, saving money on fuel, improving your health and fitness and enhancing your quality of life. Contents WALKING CYCLING TRAIN BUS CAR REDUCING THE NEED TO TRAVEL USEFUL INFORMATION
2 WALKING It s as easy as putting one foot in front of the other Did you know: A brisk walk burns the same amount of calories as a run over the same distance Walking can cut your risk of heart disease by up to 50%, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and reduce the risk of some cancers Walking boosts your immune system for 24 hours Source: NHS Walk for Life Walk your way to fitness As well as being environmentally friendly, walking is one of the simplest forms of exercise and can facilitate a number of health benefits. The info box on the left shows some of the ways this method of transport can help to keep you healthy. Why walk when I could just take the car? For some trips, it can be quicker to walk than to take the car, as well as removing some of the stresses of driving, such as getting stuck in traffic or finding somewhere to park, especially if you combine walking with another mode, such as the train or cycling. Don't forget, walking is FREE! All you need is a decent pair of shoes and perhaps some waterproofs or an umbrella. Walking is also a great way to meet people. Organisations such as Walking for Health have information about walks going on in your area. Hartley Wintney is covered by Hart Health Walks, a Walking for Health accredited scheme, which forms part of the Hart Voluntary Action project. They offer a free supported walk every Friday at 11am from Rosefield Court, near the Doctors Surgery. You don't need to register to join a walk, but you are asked to arrive 15 minutes early on your first walk in order to complete a simple registration form. Check out the links at the back for more information or to find another walk near you. On the page opposite, you'll find some of the places you might like to access on foot, such as Hampshire's mobile library, local schools or the pub! You'll also find the local Rights of Way network shown as a dotted orange line on the map. Whether you are walking as part of your commute to work, or to the shops, don't forget that walking is also a great way to Remember to carry a bottle of water and some sunscreen - even when it's not too hot, the sun can still burn Enjoying the outdoors spend time with family and enjoy the outdoors. Why not take a nature spotting guide on your walk, along with a picnic - even just some sandwiches and a bottle of water count as a picnic and give you an excuse to stop for a rest!
3 WALKING and CYCLING Where to walk, cycle and catch the bus St Mary s Park
4 CYCLING It s just like riding a bike Did you know: Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 64% in those at high risk of developing the disease; Cycling keeps the musculoskeletal system healthy; Getting out on your bike can promote mental well-being and reduces anxiety. Source: Sustrans/NICE Guidance Getting Started To get started with riding a bike, you don't need much other than a bike and perhaps a lock and helmet! If you don't already have these, you can either pick up a bargain second-hand bicycle, or consider finding out if your employer offers a Cycle to Work scheme, where you can get yourself a nice shiny new tax free bike! Cycle Training If you're not too confident in the saddle, everyone who lives in Hampshire is entitled to two hours of free adult cycle training (children will be offered training through their school). As long as you have access to a bike, you can get help, from how to use gears correctly, to more complex junctions and roundabouts. No matter what your level, there's always something new to learn, even if you have been cycling for years. For more information or to book, visit the MyJourney website at the back of this booklet. Maintaining your bike There are plenty of free resources out there to help you maintain your bike, like the Park Tools repair help and education web pages. If you don't fancy trying it yourself though, just take it along to a bike shop who will be able to carry out regular servicing as well as emergency maintenance. Cycling for life For many people, cycling is not only a great way of getting around, it's also a way of life. It's easy to catch the cycling bug once you've started, and getting out with the whole family is one way of helping to keep everyone healthy. There are different bikes and accessories for all your needs, from child trailers that you can carry young babies with; front and rear child seats; and tagalongs for the kids, to tricycles and four-wheeled, two-seater bikes for those with mobility issues. Don't forget to add your bikes to your new home insurance policy Cargo bikes like the Dutch Bakfiets or Danish Christiana and Nihola bikes are great for children and for shopping, but if you prefer to travel a little lighter, get a basket or a rack fitted with couple of pannier bags; you'll find them roomy enough for that picnic, some shopping, or even a weekend getaway! Who knows, you might even want to start planning a longer cycle touring holiday!
Getting to the station The nearest Train Station to St Mary's Park is Winchfield, which is less than a mile away to the south of the development. If you want to walk, you should probably allow yourself 20 minutes, but if you cycle, you can do it in 5-10 minutes. If you have a folding bike, you'll be able to take this on the train with you, but if not there is cycle parking at the station for 50 bikes on platform 1. This includes four cycle lockers which can be reserved through the ticket office at the station. Some trains may allow full size cycles on off-peak services, but you should check at the office before boarding the train. Taking the Train In addition to the options to walk and cycle to Winchfield, the Hartley Wintney Community Bus also serves the Station. Further details can be found on the next page. Train times and tickets Once you've decided how to get to the station, you'll want to get some tickets to your destination. Here are some of the key locations that are served by trains calling at Winchfield along with their approximate journey times: London Waterloo 55 minutes Basingstoke Fleet Woking 14 minutes 5 minutes 23 minutes Clapham Junction 52 minutes Hook 4 minutes To get detailed Train times and prices, visit the National Rail Enquiries website, and for onward journey information, try heading over to the Traveline website for door to door journey planning (details of both these sites can be found at the back of the booklet). Tickets can be bought through National Rail Enquiries or in person at the station. Ticket office opening hours: Monday - Friday 06:10-12:00 Saturday 08:00-12:00 Sunday Closed Tickets may be purchased from the ticket machine outside of opening hours. Other facilities at the station include toilets and a coffee shop. TRAINS The fast way to get from A to B 5
6 COMMUNITY BUS Let someone else do the driving Don t forget to visit the St Mary s Park Travel website to access travel information including bus timetables, route information, registration forms for the Community Bus and more! Go to: The Hartley Wintney Community Bus serves the St Mary's Park development. Buses run to and from Winchfield Rail Station during the week, as well as regular services to Hook, Yateley, Blackwater and The Meadows. There is also a service providing access to Camberley on a Saturday. Details of all the buses leaving St Mary's Park can be found below. For details of return services, please check the website, as shown on the left. Destination Hartley Wintney Community Bus Winchfield Station Hook Station Yateley, Blackwater, and The Meadows Yateley, The Meadows, and Camberley 06:54 (M-F) 08:55 09:30 10:06 (Sat) BUSES You can catch the bus from outside the sales office, but you'll need to register before you use the service for the first time. Tickets cost 1 for single journeys within the Parish and to the train Station. Destinations outside of the Parish cost 2.50 for a single journey on both scheduled and door to door services. To book a door to door service you will need to contact the Community Bus Administrator on Where possible, you should try and give 48 hours notice. 07:24 (M-F) 12:45 11:30 07:54 (M-F) 08:55 Season tickets are available for commuters who use the bus on a regular basis. These cost 30 for one month and can be purchased through the Hartley Wintney Parish Council website on the link at the back of this pack. The bus is also available for community hire outside of the normal operating hours, so whether you're part of a budding group of florists off to Chelsea, or a bunch of bakers kneading a lift to Winchester City Mill, why not consider using it for your next outing and help take a few more cars off the road. 09:54 (Sat) Community Hire 11:15 12:45 Services Run: (M-F) Monday to Friday Monday, Wednesday and Friday only (Sat) Saturday only Please note: there are no services on Bank Holidays 12:54 (Sat)
Catching the bus The pick up point for the community bus is outside the sales office at St Mary's Park There are also further bus stops at: Phoenix Green: to the west of the site, outside the Phoenix Inn on the London Road Murrell Green: to the south of the site, near the bottom of Mortimer Close. This stop can be accessed using the scenic footpath to the west of St Mary's Park. Green Lane: For service number 72 to Fleet, Aldershot and Reading, walk up Mitchell Avenue, to the north-west of the site and follow the pavement to the junction at Church View. You can then take the footpath up through the wooded area which joins with Green Lane after approximately 200 metres. The route this service takes through Hartley Wintney is shown on the map on page 3. Service 72 to Fleet, Aldershot and Reading is operated by Fleet Buzz. An adult weekly ticket for unlimited travel over 7 days costs Compare that to the cost of parking or petrol and you could start saving tomorrow. BUSES You can get the latest bus times by text and mobile. You'll need to know the service number of the bus you want to get and the SMS code for the stop. For times of the next departures from a particular stop you can use traveline-txt by sending the SMS code to The return message from traveline-txt will show the next three departures. This service currently costs 25p plus any message sending charge. Departure times will be real-time predictions where available, or scheduled departure times if not. You can also get the same information by using the SMS code at (as shown in the picture) (only normal browsing charges apply) or through several iphone or Android apps that offer access to NextBuses. NOTE: SMS codes are different in each direction. 10 8 TRAVEL BY CAR Driving down the cost of travel If you choose to travel by car, there are sustainable ways of doing so, and you can save money at the same time! Car sharing You can car share for any journey, whether it's travelling to work, doing the weekly shop, travelling to an event or to the airport. Liftshare is the largest car-sharing network in the UK. This free internet-based service is designed to introduce people who make similar journeys and encourage them to share their trip. You do not need to own a vehicle to start car sharing - you can offer a lift, request a lift or share the driving. Hampshire has its own Liftshare scheme, details of which can be found in the 'useful information' at the back of the booklet. Fuel efficient driving tips Check your revs: When you speed up, change gear at rpm Watch your speed: The most efficient speed is 45-50mph. The difference between 70mph and 85mph is 25% more fuel used Read the road: Anticipate the road ahead to reduce overacceleration and sharp breaking Plan your journey: A bit of preparation will help you to avoid congestion and/or road works Drive off from cold: Modern cars don t need to be warmed up: just drive off from cold Check your tyres: Under inflated tyres increase fuel consumption and are potentially dangerous Step off the gas: Stay in gear but take your foot off the accelerator as early as possible when approaching a red light or roundabout. This cuts fuel to the engine to almost zero Reduce drag : Remove roof racks, bike carriers and top-boxes if you are not using them Switch off when you can: If you are going to be stationary for more than a minute, switch off your engine to save fuel Air conditioning: Use it sparingly, as it increases your fuel consumption. But on the motorway it s better than opening a window which increases wind resistance Invest in a satnav: Many satnavs now have features that help you avoid traffic congestion Why not try car-sharing just once a week and see how much you could save at liftshare.com Source: MyJourneyHampshire.com
Working from Home These days, many of us have the opportunity to work from home, some because we are self employed in a service industry, others because employers are trying to utilise their office space more efficiently and therefore have moved to Smart Offices where desk sharing and working from home become part of everyday life. This helps to not only reduce the overheads of the space that the people inside the buildings take up, but also helps to reduce the cost of providing parking, which typically costs around per year for each space. If this cost is passed on to you, perhaps your employer offers a discount for only using your permit four days a week instead of five and allows working from home? If your employer currently provides parking for free but doesn t allow working from home and you think they should; why not ask whether they d consider it, and provide some information to them about the benefits to employers such as improved productivity, greater commitment from staff and reduced overheads. Of course, there are benefits to you as well, including reduced travel costs, better concentration, working around family commitments and time saving. Home Deliveries If you have a family, chances are, shopping can be a little stressful on occasion. Even when you have the benefit of being able to leave the kids at home, the weekly shop can take a big chunk of time out of your day, and isn t it annoying when you forget something and have to go back for it later? Plenty of people have already discovered the benefits of home deliveries from supermarkets; they re often used around the busy Christmas period to save time when there s so many other things to be done, but why not take advantage of the extra time all year round? With regular deliveries cheaper than ever, and the ability to change your order up until the night before it s delivered, you can add items to your shopping basket as and when you think of them before checking out and awaiting your arrival. Most of the big supermarkets deliver to St Mary s Park, these include: ASDA Sainsbury s Tesco Waitrose Morrisons don t deliver to Hartley Wintney just yet, but you can register your details with them and they ll let you know when they start operating in the area. REDUCING THE NEED TO TRAVEL The alternatives Working from home isn t the only way to work smarter, have you ever considered whether you might be able to work condensed hours, flexible working hours to reduce travel at peak times, or working from a hub closer to home. 9
