We will have our fleet of youth and adult cycles including hand cycles, adult tricycles, recumbent cycle, tandem bikes and more for anyone to tryout. This is a great chance to see what type of cycle would be best for you! Helmets are required; if possible please bring your own. Contact Sonya at to learn more. Bring your friends and checkout all of the cool bikes from 5-8 p.m. at Fort Boise Community Center. Cost: $1.00 drop-in/person Pg 6 Whitewater Rafting Pg 7 Adaptive Waterskiing Pg 8 Idaho Youth Wheelchair Sports Camp AdVenture Teen Summer Camp Mondays-Fridays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Teens, are you looking for something fun to do this summer? Once again, we are offering our adventurous summer camp for teens age with intellectual disabilities. Campers will experience a safe, fun-filled and educational summer program. The staff to participant ratio is 1:5. Activities will include field trips, art classes, planning/shopping/ making our lunch once a week, learning how to navigate the City bus, swimming and more. Participants will need to bring approximately $7 each week for field trip activities (a weekly schedule will be mailed to participants). Participants MUST register two weeks prior to their start time. Camp will meet at the Grace Jordan Community Center (6411 W Fairfield Ave in Boise). You can see ALL of the summer activities offered by AdVenture and Boise Parks & Recreation in the Activity Guide (this Newsletter only highlights AdVenture activities for May & June). Pick up a copy at Fort Boise Community Center or see it online at Bowling Club Spend four fun evenings of relaxed and social bowing with the non-competitive AdVenture Bowling Club. The fee covers 2-3 games of bowling, shoe rental and staff supervision. This activity is ideal for participants ages 14 and older. Dates: Tuesdays, May 22, June 5 & 19 and July 3 Time: 7-8:30 p.m. Location: BSU Student Union Cost: $27.50 Activity #: Youth Playcamps If you have a child age 6-12 with a disability that you will be enrolling in a Boise Parks & Recreation Youth Playcamp, please call Emily Kovarik at so accommodations can be arranged if needed for your child. Playcamps are held at five different Boise parks, learn more at our website Idaho City Trip Visit historic Idaho City with us. We will explore the sites in town, tour the museum, eat lunch, take a hike along an interpretive trail and get ice cream. This trip is partially accessible, please call Sonya at for more details. Food and transportation to and from Fort Boise Community Center and Idaho City are included. Please be ready for an active day of exploring! Please call Sonya at , upon registration to reserve a bike. These rides are supervised group rides and are not bike riding lessons; however, proper trail manners and safety will be addressed. For the safety of all, participants must be willing and able to follow two-step directions. This activity is for people ages 10 and older unless Time: 6-7:30 p.m. Cost: $5.00 Date Activity # Wednesday, May Wednesday, June Dutch Oven Cooking Enjoy a delicious dinner in the park that we will make using a cast iron pot called a Dutch oven. This beginning level class will teach you how to use a Dutch oven and we will make a main course and dessert. Classes will take place at the outdoor shelter in the park. Please discuss any dietary needs with Sonya, , at least one week prior to the activity. This program is for participants ages 14 and older unless accompanied by an adult. Date: Wednesday, May 23 Time: 5:30-8 p.m. Cost: $9.25 Activity #: Adaptive Bike Ride & Picnic Spend a fun evening going for an hour long bike ride and socializing over a picnic dinner in the park. You can bring your own bike or use one of ours, please call Sonya upon registration if you need to use one of our adaptive cycles. Date: Tuesday, June 5 Time: 5-7:30 p.m. Cost: $13.00 Activity #: Water Day & Picnic at the Pond Enjoy fishing, paddling and picnicking at Quinn s Pond. We will use inflatable kayaks and small rafts to explore the pond, fish from the accessible docks, and have a picnic lunch. Meet at the pond entrance next to Idaho River Sports, 3100 W. Pleasanton Ave., Boise. This activity is for participants ages 16 and older. Date: Saturday, June 23 Time: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Location: Quinn s Pond Cost: $16.00 Activity #: Raptor Train Ride All aboard! Join us for an exciting train ride along the scenic Payetter River. During the train ride we will stop in Banks and get to learn about birds of prey. The trip will also include a late lunch (around 3:30 p.m.) but you may wish to bring some spending money to purchase a snack on the train. The cost of this activity includes the train ride, transportation from FBCC and lunch. The train is not completely accessible; please call for more details. Participants ages 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult who also registers. 3 Mountain Home Air Base Tour Join us on a guided tour of the U.S. Air Force Base in Mountain Home, we will have the rare opportunity to learn about the aircrafts that fly in the military, inspect fighter planes, and see the military safety equipment. The cost includes lunch at the cafeteria on Base, the tour and transportation from Fort Boise Community Center. This activity is for participants ages 15 and older. Date: Friday, June 1 Time: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Cost: $18.75 Activity #: Theater & Lunch Spend your Saturday watching the comical play, The Pink Panther at the Boise Little Theatre. Before going to the theater we will have a pizza lunch. This activity is for participants ages 18 and older. Participants must have the ability to sit quietly through a two-hour play. Date: Saturday, June 2 Time: 12:30-5 p.m. Cost: $25.00 Activity #: Adaptive Swimming Lessons Lessons are available for participants ages 5 and older with disabilities who would like to learn swimming skills and water safety awareness. Previous swimming or water experience is not necessary. Lessons will be under close supervision by the two teachers, but will not be 1:1. All lessons will take place at Borah Pool; an aquatic lift is available at the pool. Time: 5:30-6:15 p.m. Location: Borah Pool Cost: $34.00 Session 1 Dates: Tues. & Thurs. Like regular golf, the object is to toss a Frisbee and hit a target in the least amount of throws. We will have a BBQ picnic dinner and then play disc golf for about an hour. Discs are provided. Outings may include bowling, pizza and a movie, Hawks baseball game and more! All participants must be appropriate in the community and the staff to participant ratio will be 1:5. Participants will get to work on money management and need to bring $2 $7 for each outing (a detailed schedule with fees will be available prior to the start of the session). After creating our personal gardens, we will use the herbs to make a delicious dinner of Dutch Oven pizza and salad that we will enjoy as a group. This activity is for participants ages 14 and older. Date: Thursday, June 21 Time: 5-8 p.m. Cost: $17.80 Activity #: ChairHoops 2012 Our annual wheelchair basketball tournament fundraiser, ChairHoops was a great success! Fifteen teams competed in the two-day tournament March 23 & 24. Players also helped raise funds for AdVenture Scholarships by collecting pledges and purchasing raffle tickets for fantastic prizes donated by many local sponsors. Overall the tournament raised $3,500 for AdVenture Scholarships! Thank you to everyone who participated, collected pledges, donated and volunteered at this fun event! 6 Adaptive Whitewater Rafting Main Payette River Yahoo, its time to enjoy a splashy day rafting on the Main Payette!! Our adapted rafting program provides the opportunity for individuals with disabilities and one friend/family member/staff to take part in a whitewater rafting adventure. Trips are led by our Adapted Recreation Specialist and include volunteer support, rafting equipment, lunch and transportation from Fort Boise Community Center to the river and back. The float time is usually 2-3 hours on class II-III rapids. Some trips may have to be rescheduled or canceled depending upon weather and river flow; the return time may also vary due to conditions. This trip is for people age 12 and older, but youth age must be accompanied by a parent/ guardian. For safety reasons, ALL participants must be able to roll in the water from a facedown position to their back while wearing a life jacket and have the ability to grasp. Participants must also be able to follow two-step directions. More AdVenture rafting trips are available in July and August on the Main and Cabarton sections of the Payette River and on the Boise River. Activity level is moderate; we will take short hikes in the nearby wilderness. All campers must be able to get in and out of a tent independently and enjoy being in the great outdoors. You will experience lakeside tent camping, games, campfire cooking and relaxing in a gorgeous location. The package includes all meals, transportation to and from the campground and Fort Boise Community Center, camping fees and equipment. Participants will receive a packing list upon registration. This vacation is for participants ages 18 and older. Dates/Times: Tues., July 17, 9 a.m. - Thurs., July 19, 3:30 p.m. Cost: $70.00 Activity #: Dinner & a Movie Catch dinner and a movie on these fun, social Friday night outings! At dinner, we will decide as a group which movie (rated G to PG-13) to see. The cost of the evening includes transportation from FBCC to the activities and back, dinner and the movie. 7 Wheelchair Rugby Demo Bring your friends and family to tryout wheelchair rugby for FREE! All ages and abilities are welcome to checkout wheelchair rugby (also know as quad rugby and Murderball ). We were just awarded a large grant to purchase rugby wheelchairs and start a rugby program in the Treasure Valley! The grant funding for this program is awarded by U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, through funding provided by Veterans Affairs. The grants are provided to facilitate the growth of Paralympic sport programming for disabled Veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces. Date: Saturday, May 5 Time: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost: FREE! Individuals with physical disabilities are welcome to sign up for any programs mentioned in this newsletter. However, the following AdVenture Seeker programs are designed specifically for people with physical disabilities and their friends/family who are seeking a bit more adventure with less staff supervision. Youth Bike Ride Meet up with friends for a fun bike ride along the Greenbelt with AdVenture. Bring your own bike or use one of our adaptive cycles (hand cycles, trikes and other bikes are available). Please call Sonya at , upon registration to discuss which cycle will work best for you. This ride is for participants ages 10-21; however youth under age 10 may attend if accompanied by an adult. Date: Friday, June 29 Time: 6-8 p.m. Cost: $5.00 Activity #: Salmon River Rafting & Camping Spend two nights tent camping near Riggins and rafting the exciting Main Salmon River and the scenic and splashy Cabarton section of the Payette River. This trip is for individuals with physical disabilities who can also sign up a friend, family member or care provider. Our cabins are not completely ADA accessible and the small planes cannot accommodate power chairs (please call for specifics). At the ranch we will have the opportunity to fish, explore the ranch and enjoy the wilderness. Many thanks to Sulphur Creek Ranch, the Idaho Aviation Foundation and the pilots for making this amazing experience possible. At the request of the pilots, priority is given to youth (ages 5-17) with physical disabilities (and one parent/adult) who have not previously been to Sulphur Creek. Dates/Times: Fri. July 15 at 2 p.m. Location: Boise Air Service Cost: $41.00/person Activity #: Adaptive Waterskiing Whether you are learning to ski for the first time or relearning the sport after an accident, this is a great summer adventure. This program is designed for individuals with physical disabilities who will use a sit ski. All participants must be able to roll in the water from a face-down position to their backs while wearing a life jacket (demonstrations may be requested prior to skiing). This program is for participants ages 14 and older. The cart is a Solo Rider and is available to anyone with a physical disability at no additional cost. Individuals age 6-19 who use a wheelchair or an assisted device (walker, crutches, AFO braces, etc.) have the opportunity to develop skills, improve their fitness level and try adaptive sports. Participants will get to enjoy a variety of athletic and recreational activities such as tennis, basketball, wheelchair rugby, track and field, fishing, canoeing and more.
