51 50 Stainless steel recycling Recycling of Kent Stainless Steel Kent Stainless are fully aware of it s impact on and responsibilities to the environment. We are fortunate to work primarily with a material that has excellent recycling capabilities. Firstly, Stainless Steel is a valuable commodity. Stainless Steel contains Chromium, Molybdenum and Nickel. It s high relative value compared to other steels make it financially viable for the waste recovery industry to fully recycle stainless. In practise this is a self sustaining industry in itself. Stainless suffers no degradation in recycling. What goes in comes out the same just in different shapes and forms in the same quality ie stainless steel is 100% recyclable. 236 The Stainless Steel which Kent Stainless uses is made up of recycled stainless steel along with other alloys. In fact approximately 65-70% of the end product Kent Stainless produces started life as another stainless product which has then been recycled. This may be left over material from other production runs (new scrap) off cuts - along with scrappage items that have served their time on the market (old scrap) kitchen sinks, car exhausts, railings, cutlery. As time goes on, this figure of 70% is predicted to increase. As the demand for stainless steel production rises, more and more old scrap will come on the market although this only appears at the end of the stainless item s useful life & this is typically in excess of 30 years. Therefore the amount of old scrap that can be recycled is limited by the amount of production that took place many years ago.
