Paul and I were finally on our bike for the Burlington Birthday Party and from there, the WONC planning meeting. And, did we fry?? Yes, it was blasting hot. We traveled with Mike, Lynn, Keith, and Peggy from P2 and Jeff and Wanda from L. We spent the night in Asheboro after the Burlington bash, thinking we would party down; but, we were so beat up from the heat, everyone retired early. We had a great dinner ride, hosted by Don and Phyllis Wilkinson where everyone met at the Captains Cap in Denver. There were 16 of us Wilkinson s, Johnson s, Hickerson s, Hunter s, Rippy, Rogers, Moose s, Eaton s and Rene and his wife, Lynn. The food was great. If you missed it, you missed out on good company at the dinner table. I ll be talking with you at our next gathering August 11th about our job at Wings over North Carolina. I hope you will read what I have put together about that weekend. I have told Andrew and Vickie that we know how the Light Show is done and they have no need to worry about that part of the show, because we can handle it! I would like for us to get together between Aug and Sept to get this schedule ironed out because I don t want us to fail and also, I have a few other things to talk about. Be thinking about a get-together at someone s house, maybe. We ll talk about it later. Paul said that everyone who has the $5 tickets, you will need to bring in your money you ve collected so far. We have to turn it in. So, August 11 meeting, bring your money and tickets, if you are done with them. Otherwise, keep on selling. Don t forget our over-nighter scheduled August 25th. Check the newsletter for details about the hotel we re staying in. Remember, this is the Ride for Kids weekend. This is our Chapter Charity we ve supported all year and now is our chance to support the Pediatric Brain Meeting Place Golden Corral, Hwy 150 Mooresville, NC We eat at 9:00 a.m. We meet at 10:00 2nd Saturday of each month Come and join us! We ll love having you visit. Webmaster Tom Pennoni Important Information! GWRRA Region N Visit us on the web at: Lake Norman Wings NC-L2 August 2012 Page 1 of 14

6 A Safety Message From Your ROGER HUNTER Ride Educator Defeating the Thief! You ride all day to reach your destination and boy was it a great ride! But now you are tired, hungry and just plain whooped! It is time to sign in at you Hotel and get a shower before heading to the restaurant to partake in a welldeserved feast. After dinner and a little quiet time you turn in for the night. At sunrise you wake to find a nice bright sunrise and a cloudless morning. It s another perfect day to continue you trip to the new days adventures on the roads of America. All packed up you head down to load your bike and. WHAT THE HAY? Someone decided that your property should be yours! Gone from your possession is your electronics, all the contents of your saddlebags and trunk as well as your trailer! Or. Worse yet your RIDE is completely missing.. Welcome to the real life Twilight Zone. This month we will discuss some steps that can help prevent a thief from walking off with your hard earned property. At the very least maybe these tips will delay the thief from making a quick snatch and grab. If they do make off with some of your goods then maybe this article can help you prepare beforehand to recover your stolen items. This article is only a guideline to help you prepare your belongings against theft. There is a multitude of ways to deter theft so your situation may require other original ideas to protect your property. Please share those Ideas with your group, and friends. Together we can defeat the thief. Lake Norman Wings NC-L2 August 2012 Page 6 of 14

7 QUICK TIPS: Preventing Motorcycle Theft Follow these basic tips to help avoid becoming a victim of motorcycle theft: Lock your ignition and remove the key. Most bike thefts occur when the ignition is shut off, but not locked. Lock the forks or disk brakes with locks that have large, brightly colored tags. If traveling with other riders, lock motorcycles together when not in use. If riding alone, lock your bike to a secure, stationary object that can t be easily dismantled, such as a light pole. Add an audible alarm to your motorcycle. When traveling and spending the night at a hotel, locate an outdoor security camera and park your bike in the camera s view. If this is not possible, park your bike close to your room. Keep an eye on your bike. When parking at a public event, check your motorcycle periodically, especially immediately after leaving your bike, to make sure there are no suspicious individuals lurking about.. Uniquely mark and then photograph your bike. If thieves take your bike, note its unique markings to law enforcement using the photos you have taken. Lake Norman Wings NC-L2 August 2012 Page 7 of 14

8 If you use a trailer, follow these safety tips: Park the trailer and bike in a well-lit location near security cameras or in an area easily seen by restaurant, hotel or event staff. Lock the trailer lid and hitch. Know your trailer identification and license plate registration numbers.. Theft Prevention Tips courtesy of Sentry Insurance Published by Motorcycle Safety Foundation Here are a few other ideas that can protect your motorcycle and its contents. When you stop for a meal, try to park your bike where you can see it while you eat. At the very least try to park in front of the restaurant as close to foot traffic. Near the front door and in a well lit area is best. While at a Hotel for the night empty all you valuables from your trailer, bike bags and other compartments. Take your electronics inside with you. Then cover your bike to keep prying eyes off your property. If you stop at a restaurant, gas station, hotel, tourist attraction or other similar places take a moment to look around and observe any shady looking characters. Make a mental note of their description, how many and if they are in a vehicle what kind and can you see the plates? Do you notice anyone watching your every move? Is there someone with an empty trailer or cargo trailer in the area? Make a note of the type vehicle and trailer. Keep an open mind and open eyes. Stay Alert, Stay Safe, Have Fun! 9 Charles Ride Coordinator GWRRA APPALACHIAN REGION N Gathering time is almost upon us and I'm late getting my article in as usual. I have a hard time trying to think of anything that will be of interest to our group. I'm guessing that money might be that something but I'm still holding the ride pot for May and July. Phil Coleman won in May and Don Sherman won in July so maybe this will get their attention and have them collect their winnings at our August gathering. We are needing to have everyone fill out new dinner ride cards. I'll be passing out forms for this so be sure to have your favorite restaurant in mind. Since we had a rain out on our last planned ride in July, here is what is planned for the after gathering ride for August. We will do a scenic ride by way of Kings Mountain National Park to my sister's farm that is located a few miles from the park. Plans are to arrive between 1 & 2 Pm and have hot dogs and ice cream for lunch. I hope everyone will enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and huge shade trees as they eat their lunch among the many animals that are on the farm. There is also a restored log home that may be of interest to some. It was built in the 1700s by the original land owners and has been restored. You will also be able to stand in two states at the same time since the farm is in both North and South Carolina. Be sure to make plans to join this ride and have a good time. 10 Membership Enhancement Coordinator-Lynne Dunn Lynn Member Enhancement Louis and I just returned from Oshkosh, Wisconsin after volunteer working at Air Adventure, the largest air show in the world. Louis flew his RV-8 he had completed in August 2011 and he was the first to register his aircraft in the homebuilt area since we arrived five days early. There were a total of 299 RVs (airplanes similar to Louis airplane) plus many other airplanes parked on the airport in the homebuilt section. I do not know the total number of airplanes on the field but would estimate at least We had pulled our fifth wheel camper from North Carolina to Oshkosh a few weeks prior to Air Adventure and enjoyed dry camping using a generator to keep the battery charged and some electricity. We managed to survive two weeks without overflowing any of the waste tanks and still had fresh water to spare. GWRRA has announced our new Camping & RV Special Interest Group representatives Jorge and Julia Perez. We look forward to new camping information. On the GWRRA website under travel, information is available for KOA camping. We have stayed in KOA campgrounds and they have always been very nice. They are more expensive than many other campgrounds. Membership in KOA is $24.00 a year and you do not have to be a member to stay at a KOA campground. Dewey Tech Tip A LITTLE ABOUT GOLD WING BRAKES... The 1800 has a linked brake system which means as you apply either front hand brake or pedal brake both wheels produce some braking. The hand brake is 2/3 of right front caliper and 1/3 left front which through the linked system also drives 2/3 of the rear. The foot brake is 1/3 rear and 1/3 right front and other 2/3 rear through linked system. There are three pistons in each caliper so the combo can be done. Please note it is always best for most effective braking to use both hand and foot brake systems together. The stock (OEM) rear pads are 6mm thickness while front brakes are 4mm. Most of braking takes place on the front because of weight shift and other factors. Therefore, thinner pads along with faster wear cause the front to wear about two times quicker than rear. There are after market pads available with some better than others, i.e. EBC PART 261 H FRONT/FRONT 261/2H REAR or CERAMIC PADS, but a manufacturer of ceramic pads say you must resurface disc when using their pads. So there is not much savings. Along with the wear life on OEM PADS, the cost is about the same as with others. Also, Honda recommends replacing disc bolts when you change disc. You should clean pistons when changing brake pads. So that just about brakes it down for now. Lake Norman Wings NC-L2 August 2012 Page 10 of 14

GWRRA is providing this special website for this Program. To capture those special travel moments, use this Passport when you go to GWRRA events like Wing Ding, your Region or District rally, or a seminar or OCP, etc. At each event (at any GWRRA booth), the Chapter Director, District Director or Region Director will apply a special stamp or initials (one per event) to recognize your attendance. After completing the entire Passport, send it to the Home Office by July 31, 2012, for a chance to win one of several prizes, and have your name placed on this page.
