1 Lakota East High School T-Hawk News News and Updates from Lakota East High School January 11, 2017 REGISTRATION BEGINS It is hard to believe we are already embarking on the registration process for the school year. We will be conducting several actvities over the next several weeks aimed at preparing our students and parents for course selection. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure your student is on the best path to the high school and post-secondary goals. We will be sending out a special Registration Edition of the T-Hawk News that will outline all the important upcoming dates. #EASTSIDEPRIDE Great Things Going On At East! Please take some time to sit down and talk with your child regarding the progress they are making towards graduation and their future goals. College and Career Night - TOMORROW - Thursday, January 12

12 Don't miss College, Career and Military Night, TOMORROW, Thursday, January 12, 2016 from 6:00 pm 8:30 pm. There is something for everyone focusing on parents and students in grades A PSAT seminar will be offered on how to read and understand the results UPDATE: PSAT Score Reports will be available in the Theater Lobby prior to the sessions. Free workshops on career planning, college search, Naviance, financial planning, handling the stresses of college life and a panel on alternatives to the typical four year degree as determined by the current job market will be offered. There will also be the involvement of our military to create a college, career and military focus for the evening. Please click here for the flyer outlining the sessions for the evening. Financial Aid Seminar for seniors and senior parents ONLY will be held at 7:00 pm in Room 200.

13 CONFERENCE NIGHT - Wednesday, January 18 Our third Parent Teacher Conference Night of the year will be held Wednesday, January 18 from 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm. You can sign up for Parent-Teacher Conferences at: Schedules will fill up fast so please register today. In order to allow as many parents as possible to schedule, group conferences are not available and only one spot per teacher should be scheduled. We encourage you to take this time to talk directly with your child's teachers to determine ways to help best support their continued academic success. LAKOTA EAST HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS "A WRINKLE IN TIME" A Wrinkle in Time, originally by Madeline L Engle and adapted for the stage by Tracy Young, is a classic science-fiction story of 12-year-old Meg who sets off to find her missing father. She and her brother Charles Wallace and their new friend, Calvin O Keefe, are transported through time and space on an adventure. With the help of three odd neighbors, Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which, they seek to find Meg s father and rescue him from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on a dark planet. Highlights of this show include: travel by centaur, visiting distant and diverse planets, battling mind-controlling forces of evil, transformation of characters into everything from a puppet to a mythical Aunt Beast, and a visit to the world of This family-friendly show will be presented at Lakota East High School on January 20 and 21. We want to create a PowerPoint to show which colleges have offered you admittance. This will be updated weekly and shown on the television monitors along Main Street in our building on Fridays. 16 District Notes E-Flyers What's News This Week? As a reminder, E-Flyers is Lakota s way of distributing information about programs, classes, events and opportunities happening in our schools and around the community. Rather than sending flyers home with students, we are now posting all approved information on the E-Flyer page, making it easy for families to access all current opportunities. Everyone is invited to attend the community's eighteenth annual celebration honoring the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. The "Live the Dream: Our Declaration of Unity" events will take place on Monday, Jan. 16.

17 March for Unity in Our Community: This walk begins on Monday at noon at the Clocktower at The Square at Union Centre and will finish at the Lakota West High School cafeteria, where all marchers will be treated to a free lunch donated by local restaurants. Immediately following lunch, the program will begin featuring student contest winners sharing their ideas on how to incorporate the ideals of the Beloved Community into their lives and their community. Other West Chester events honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. include: Black History Month Lecture: West Chester's MidPointe Library will host a lecture called "The Buffalo Soldiers and the Black Lone Ranger: African Americans in the Wild, Wild West" on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. Eric Guttag, a local lawyer and history buff, will be delivering this informative presentation. Spring RASKALS Clean-up: Sign up to work with others to assist the elderly with their yardwork. You can sign up at the Live the Dream lunch. Student Fanfare Events: A Great Way To Offer Encouragement Lakota Local Schools has implemented a new series of community fanfare events supporting student achievement. The concept, derived from a first day of school tradition at Hopewell Junior School, brings community and school leaders together to send a message of support to Lakota students. At different times throughout the school year, the district is inviting community residents and businesses to join school staff for a fanfare-like welcome to school for students. The group s task is a simple one: Line the school s entrance and give students high-fives and words of encouragement as they re filing into school. The new tradition aims to provide students with a visual display of all their supporters during times like testing and the start of a new semester. Community members are invited to be part of these fun events. 18 Robb Vogelmann and Treasurer Jenni Logan at one of the monthly "Coffee Connections". These informal coffee chats out in the community are typically held on the last Wednesday of each month. For an hour, both are available for drop-in conversation with parents and residents at local coffee houses (rotating between West Chester and Liberty Township locations) as part of an initiative called Coffee Connections. A Reminder about Lakota's Snow Day Procedures We re officially in winter, with the risk of inclement weather there's still plenty of winter left. Be prepared by making sure that your Lakota communication preferences are set up to receive weather-related notifications in the manner you wish to receive them. In addition to posting an alert on the district homepage and Facebook page, Lakota also issues a phone call, text message and to anyone who has selected these options for weather-related alerts. Local newspapers, television and radio stations are another source of these updates. Lakota has recently switched to a new notification system for general, emergency and weather-related communications. If you are the official parent or guardian of a current Lakota student or a current employee with a valid Lakota address, please log into Info Center to make sure the phone numbers and addresses being automatically pulled from Home Access Center (parents) and active directory (staff) are accurate and up-to-date. To view and modify your weather-related preferences, select Preferences, then Weather- Related Notifications. Others in the Lakota community who are not parents, guardians or employees and wish to subscribe to district communications may do so via Lakota s self-sign-up portal.
