1 Black History Month Oratorical Competition Inspired by History Saturday, February 27, am - 5pm We are excited to come together to celebrate Black History month. Noted as the one month nationally we spotlight the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans, it was the brainchild and launched in 1976 by noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. This year we are hosting Inspired by History our own oratorical competition for grades We are inviting all students in grades 1-12 (grouped together in classes as noted below) to prepare a short speech based on the life of a celebrated African American as listed below. All participants are required to prepare a speech that falls within the allotted time as listed below according to your grade class. In preparing your speech, we are asking you to highlight the accomplishments of the individual you selected from the list below. Please be sure to include their contributions to society and why their accomplishments remain relevant. Speech Length Grade Class 1-3 Grade Class 4-5 Grade Class 6-8 Grade Class minute speech 2-3 minute speech 3-4 minute speech 4-5 minute speech We will have judges that will score each contestant on a scale of 1-7 on content, diction, eye contact, articulation, pronunciation and preparedness. Speech Prep Class To assist each participant, we are offering a complimentary speech prep class taught by a coach that will help develop your content, diction, eye contact, articulation, pronunciation and preparedness. The speech prep class will be offered on Thursday, February 18th and Thursday, February 25th from 4:00pm - 8:30pm at the East campus. Participants should

2 register in advance for which session they would like to attend. It is not mandatory that participants attend either session. The Competition The competition will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 11am - 3pm at the East location (or until all participants have presented.) The 1st place winners of each category will be selected to present their winning recitation at the campus where they worship each week, the following day, Sunday, February 28th. Prizes: There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner in each grade class. The 1st place winner of each grade class will receive a $300, 2nd place winners will receive a $200 and all 3rd place winners will receive a $100. 4 How do I apply? You may apply online. Frequently Asked Questions: Who may participate? Any student that is a member of one our Triumph campuses. May I read my speech or must it be memorized? You may read it. What system will the judges use? Each contestant will be evaluated on a scale of 1 to 7 based on content, diction, eye contact, articulation, pronunciation and preparedness. What if my speech is shorter or longer than the allotted time? You will receive a deduction in your overall score of 1 point for each minute you are under or over your allowed time. Will any of the coaches serves as judges? No Can my speech be recorded or videotaped when I present it before the judges? Yes, but the person recording must do it from their seat. What should I wear during competition? Black bottoms and a white shirt for males and black skirts or pants and a white top for girls. What time should I arrive? Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the competition to sign in and receive onsite instructions. Can a parent, friend or supporter attend the competition with me? Yes. When will the winners be notified? Winners will be notified by phone on the evening of the competition once all scores have been tabulated. What should I wear to present my speech if I am a 1st place winner? You should wear a suit if you are a male and a dress if you are a female. Who can I speak with if I have additional questions?
