Kuranui Korero 15 April 2016 "Be the best you can be" Whāia te iti kahurangi Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa You will have seen and read in the media that new Health and Safety legislation has just been enacted. We are very carefully auditing our Health and Safety policies and procedures to ensure that we comply with the new regulations. There will be changes to some of our procedures and I will inform you of these as we develop them and roll them out. One immediate change you will notice if you visit the college, is a new sign in/sign out system. We must know who is on site, what they have come to do and all visitors must know about our health and safety and evacuation procedures. We have installed Vistab an electronic sign in/sign out system at the main college office. There are two Vistab electronic tablets. One is for visitors and staff to sign in and out and the other is for students to sign in if they are late to the college and to sign out when they leave the college during the day. Another new piece of legislation which affects the way we operate the college is the Vulnerable Children s Act This act is intended to protect children from abuse and neglect. As it applies to the college this means protecting your children when they are interacting with any of our staff whether they are permanent, part time, contractors, casual or volunteers. All staff working with our students must be safety checked every three years. This means that we use a comprehensive safety checklist which includes a police approved identity check. As we review and update our systems and procedures I will inform you of the changes we make. Included in the legislation is a requirement for staff to report what they believe to be signs of neglect and/or abuse of the children they are working with. To comply with the act we are developing robust procedures for staff to follow to ensure the safety and protection of the children and themselves. This is a website developed to help young people and local services as well as schools to interact and see what s happening in the Wairarapa specific to youth events within our region. Not only can you see up and coming events but you can also add any youth friendly events, workshops or programmes to the online calendar. To go on to the website use the link below

Term two will bring cooler weather and students will need to be dressed in warm uniform. Already we have noted that many non-regulation tops are arriving at school. I ask that you ensure your son/daughter leaves home dressed in correct uniform. Hoodies or sweat shirts are not permitted - only the Kuranui College sky blue jersey can be worn. Jackets are to be plain black or navy blue with NO COLOURED LOGOS. Trousers must be plain navy blue and MAY NOT have elastic around the ankles. Students may ONLY wear a Kuranui cap or a plain dark blue sunhat in Terms 1 and 4 OR a dark blue beanie ONLY in Terms 2 and 3. Students dressed in incorrect uniform will have the item confiscated or they may be bought home to change into correct uniform. May is Hospice Awareness Week when the hospice reminds the community about the free services and equipment to patients and their families on a terminal journey. The hospice is holding a Shorts for Hospice day on the 20 th of May because as they say life is short. On 20 May we will hold a mufti day as a fund raiser for the hospice. I hope that all students will be generous with their gold coin donations for this very worthy cause. Have you visited our website recently? We update the website regularly with new information and photographs. It really is the window into our school. Click on and have a look around. Homes Construction builders have begun excavations for the foundations for the Visual Arts Suite. It is wonderful to finally see building work underway. ANZAC Day this year falls in the April holidays. Student Leaders will be attending all of the southern Wairarapa parades and all students and families are very welcome to attend with them. We will begin at the Martinborough dawn parade which begins at 5.45am. The Student Leaders will then come to the college for breakfast before moving on to the Featherston parade at 9am, the Greytown parade at 10am, the Lake Ferry parade at 10.30am and the Carterton parade at 10.45am. I look forward to seeing students and families at these parades.

Over the last three years as New Zealand has commemorated the 100 years since World War One began we have held special assemblies close to ANZAC Day to commemorate a particular aspect of WW1. This year we commemorated the Māori soldiers who served first as the native contingent and then went on to form the Māori Battalion which later became very well-known during World War Two. After speeches by Student Leaders and a slide show of photographs of the maori Battalion in WW1 the whole staff performed the waiata E te Hokowhitu-a-Tu. This moving waiata was specially written to honour the awarding of a posthumous Victoria Cross to Lieutenant Ngarimu of the maori Battalion. Staff performing E te Hokowhitu-a-Tu to the assembly Head Boy Joseph Redfern, Head Girl Georgia McNeill and Student Leader Aseri Waqa speaking to the assembly and explaining why we should remember and respect what happened 100 years ago in WW1.

Egan Tearle, Grace Voice, Sophie Dennis and supporting cast in A Winter s Tale On the 5th of April a team of 25 students, cast and crew, performed in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival at Rathkeale College with a performance from "A Winter's Tale". This year s scene featured Egan Tearle as Leontes, Grace Voice as Hermione, Sophie Dennis as Paulina, Gavin Hosnell as Polixenes and Jessica Buckham as Antigonus. For the first time since 2007, we won the top section, the 15 minute competition! The cast and crew will now be off to the National Competition over Queen's Birthday weekend, where they will perform at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington and participate in workshops with theatre tutors invited from around the world. Final Score a narrow win to the police ;)

In support of Aratoi Museum of Art and History s current exhibition and ANZAC Day, Kuranui College was invited to participate in "The Stones Project," remembering the soldiers who were stationed at Featherston Military Training Camp during World War I. During the war, soldiers training at the camp took great pride in creating their own displays which reflected elements of their unit, the home regions, the army, and the nation for which they served. Year 9 students in Mr Buckham's Community Leadership class designed the piece and prepared the materials for the project with the help of a number of other staff and whanau. Materials were limited to those available to the soldiers who training and served at the camp: whitewashed stones, coal, glass and bricks. On Wednesday, 13 April, the piece was installed at Aratoi and the finished project will be officially celebrated on Friday, 15 April at 4pm. Thanks to everyone who helped in so many different ways for our roast dinner fundraiser at the Tauherenikau racecourse. We had people cooking, making brownies, delivering and serving up a storm for the Raroa Intermediate students and not just from Kuranui and Greytown Primary s communities retirees in the community helped by cooking roasts during the day for us! We made around $8,000 for the two schools Greytown School and Kuranui College. Over four weeks and eight nights we: served 557 meals cooked upwards of 70 donated roasts boiled 24kg of peas boiled 36kg of carrots roasted about 80kg of potatoes whipped 8lt of cream made 32lt of hot chocolate sauce cut up around 550 pieces of donated brownie catered for 35 with food intolerances. What a huge effort, thank you! Special thanks to: Fresh Choice Greytown for ingredients and cream Smiths Seeds for potatoes Slaters Potatoes for potatoes Rannoch Meats And all of the helpers on the nights

The college held its annual cross country championship races last week. These pictures show students on their way around the road circuit or resting at the end of their race. WE NEED YOU! This is a further reminder that triennial BOT elections are being held on 3 June Now is the time to think about how you can contribute to your school community. We welcome interest from parents, caregivers or community members who can offer some time to assist in a governance role on the Board of Trustees. Schools are self-managing organisations and their boards need energetic, motivated people with a variety of skills to help guide and support them in a governance role. Our current Board members have all offered to share their experiences with you and answer any queries you many have before you make any commitment to become involved. If you would like to discuss the role with one of them, contact the Board Secretary, Jo Crimp at crimpj@kuranui-college.school.nz and she will pass on relevant contact details.
