1 PARK NEWS Issue 26 February 2010 School Enq: Absence Line: Website: DAGENHAM PARK CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL THOUGHT OF THE MONTH What is written without effort is in general read without pleasure Welcome back to school after the half-term holiday. We hope you enjoy this edition of Park News and continue to find it informative and entertaining. As usual, if you need any more copies, contact the editor, details below. DON T MISS Page 2 Bugsy Page 4 Panathlon Challenge Page 9 advance Performances Page 19 Maths Puzzle Reminder: Year 9 Parents evening Thursday 4 th March pm 7.00pm. 2 Bugsy This year s whole school production of Bugsy was a huge success! Both evening performances were a sell out so the students performed to a packed audience. The Performing Arts Departments put in a huge amount of work to ensure that the production ran smoothly. The show was a much more ambitious project than last year s production of Oliver! with a bigger cast and many more scene changes. Miss Lewis would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped out with the production. 2
3 The G&T effect.. Can you escape your fate? Is real equality possible? Can someone deserve to die? Can you think without words? A group of Year 7 and 8 students spent a day exploring questions such as these by attending a Philosophy workshop held at Barking Abbey School, accompanied by Mr Kennedy and Ms Charlton. The day was designed to stretch their thinking skills and questioning. Amani Lahmami in 7M said it was a lot of fun and a good chance to work with other G&T students from local schools. Visit to Queen Mary s University A group of Year 10 students visited the Centre of the Cell, looking at the high-tech technology designed by students of Queen Mary s University. They then had a chance to explore the University itself and talk to the ambassadors. Kristina Terech now has her heart set on going to Queen Mary s! Ms Bains 3
4 ALL LONDON 2010 PANATHLON CHALLENGE On the 1st February, I took the following students to Robert Clack School in Dagenham to take part in the above event. Scott Ross Daniel O'Sullivan Aidan Mergulhao The event consisted of an under 16's football match, Boccia, Kurling, Polybat, Table Cricket, and Indoor Athletics. The three students joined forces with students from Trinity and Eastbrook schools to represent the Borough. I am very pleased to say that the Barking and Dagenham Team came in overall 1st position on the day and beat Redbridge and Havering. This means that our team will now go forward to meet Hackney and Newham in the East London final on 16 March. Then, hopefully, if all goes well they will be taking part in the London Panathlon in June. I am so proud of what these students have achieved and they all enjoyed the experience. Clare Hogg 4
5 Scott, Daniel and Aidan B &D ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS The Borough Rowing Championships were held on Friday 22 January at Robert Clack School. Our pupils did us proud and we came away with three medals. 9 The advance Performances Broadway Theatre, Barking Thursday 11 th February The Royal Ballet School, Covent Garden, London Friday 12 th February. Sixth Formers from Dagenham Park School and similar age students currently studying ballet at The Royal Ballet School, successfully collaborated to give two outstanding performances. Both shows were sold out. Audiences were full of praise for the students of Dagenham Park who should be proud, not only to have gained the opportunity to dance with a world class dance institution, but to have performed with grace and ability, matching The Royal Ballet performers seamlessly. I am proud of the students achievement. It has been an incredible journey, particularly for some of the dancers who are just taking dance for the first time. It has been incredibly rewarding to have witnessed them take on the challenge and aspire to such an amazing level of achievement Mrs. Watkins, Head of Dance An Ex-Dagenham Park Student who came to the performance said; I just wanted to say, congratulations on such a wonderful show last week! Everyone was fantastic! Another student commented, The year 13 s brought tears to my eyes, they danced with such emotion! We would like to congratulate all of the dancers for their great work! Well done all! An enormous thank you to everyone who supported us, including the staff behind the scenes, who made these performances possible. Dance Department. 9
