1 Friday, May 11, 2012 Fifth Grade Zebras Prepare for Track Meet District Track Meet to be held June 8 Sunny skies greeted the GVE 5th grade students as they practiced for the district track meet at Skyridge MS last Wednesday. The track meet will be at Doc Harris stadium on Friday, June 8 from 9-1:40.

3 Assembly has Carnival Fun! Reminder Grass Valley Elementary CARNIVAL AND AUCTION is tonight! - Friday, May 11 from 5:30-8:00pm Wristbands will be $7 at the door. See You There! Several students volunteered to demonstrate some of the fun activities and games that will be featured at the carnival. Volunteer Maria M. demonstrates face painting and hair coloring techniques that will be offered at the school carnival Friday night! Three lucky students won prizes at the raffle during the assembly on Wednesday!

4 What s Happening Grass Valley Vocal Jazz has just received a coveted DOWNBEAT Award from Downbeat Magazine. We are recognized with a 2012 "Elementary School Special Judges Award" Because we are so unique as an elementary vocal jazz ensemble we applied in the junior high vocal jazz category. This is extremely exciting to have our own special award in this national competition! The results will be published in the June edition of DOWNBEAT Magazine. We were previously recognized with a DOWNBEAT Award in 2006 as an Outstanding Performance by a junior high vocal jazz ensemble. Please congratulate GVVJ members when you have the opportunity! I am so very PROUD!!! Whoo-hoo!! - Natalie Wilson Threaded Bottle Cap Drive: First of all, hats off to all four schools for working so hard at collecting a total of 288,621 bottle caps!! This was by far our most successful drive we have had! Congratulations to our WINNER, COLUMBIA VALLEY for collecting a total of 115,250 caps! Illahee came in second with a total of 90,000, Fisher's Landing collected 77,785 and Grass Valley joined us for the first time with a total of 5,586! Andrea Beneke Sorelle Spa Salon The threaded bottle cap drive is over but Grass Valley will continue to collect the caps throughout the year just as the other three participating schools have done in the past. For the rest of the school year, a collection box will be located in the trashsorting line-up in the cafeteria (near the stage) and another by the Green School bulletin board near the Elmerʼs Glue bottle collection box underneath the front staircase to the library. Please continue to bring in those bottle caps! Thank you.

5 What s Happening Art Discovery Program The Art Discovery Program provides grades 1-5 students with an opportunity to explore great art in the classroom, taught by volunteers. The goal of the program is to expose students to different types of art and art techniques and to teach them basic elements and principles of art. The art lessons are a variety of different subjects ranging from the caveman timeperiod to modern art. The lessons teach the history of the times, an overview of the featured artists, and how to look at art in meaningful ways. The lessons consist of a minute presentation and a 30 minute project (approximates.). It is an extremely rewarding and educational program that students look foward to and love. An introduction to the new art program "Art Discovery" will be on June 5th 9:10-10am in the art portable. Volunteers are invited to attend. Why is the Art Discovery Volunteer Program important? Looking at and talking about art encourages thinking skills: observing, remembering, comparing, questioning and making choices. Learning about art helps students to form and verbalize their own ideas, which cultivates creative thinking as well as language ability. Great art has always enriched people s lives. Volunteers, as well as the students, find this program extremely enjoyable!

In this class you will learn from preswing to in-swing fundamentals that will last. The camp will also cover basic golf etiquette and some basic golf rules. 9 One PEACH Of A Fruit Peaches are the third most popular fruit grown in America. They are actually a member of the rose family and are related to nectarines, cherries, plums and loquats. The flesh of a peach can vary from white, to yellow, to light red! While there are hundreds of different varieties of peaches sold commercially, there are only two categories of peaches, that being clingstones and freestones. The clingstone peach has a firm flesh that clings to the pit and must be separated with the use of a knife, while the freestone peach has a juicy, much softer flesh that can be easily separated from the pit by human hands. California is the number one provider of peaches in the United States, even though Georgia is known as the Peach State. California sells over 200 different varieties of peaches commercially, while Georgia sells around 40. Peaches typically have a shelf life of up to 14 to 21 days. When choosing a peach, choose one that has a strong aroma and gives away with soft pressure. You want to avoid the ones with dark spots or those that feel mushy to the touch. A great trick to get the skin off of a peach is to place it in boiling water for 10 seconds and then plunging it immediately into ice water to cool. The skin will instantly slip right off. Nutrition NOTES Peaches are a delicious fruit that has the ability to nutritionally cure anybody s sweet tooth. They are sweet to the taste due to the natural sugar they contain known as sucrose. Peaches are a great source of Vitamin C, delivering 10% of your recommended daily intake, along with other vitamins and minerals like potassium. Peaches, especially the yellow-fleshed ones, contain a decent amount of beta-carotene, which the body then converts into Vitamin A. In addition to all that, peaches are also a great source of fiber, can help keep blood sugar and cholesterol levels low and contain very few calories due to their high water content. The peach was brought to America by Spanish explorers in the sixteenth century. Various American- Indian tribes were credited for bringing the peach tree across the United States, taking the seeds of the peach along with them and planting them across the country. U.S. farmers did not begin commercially producing the peach until the nineteenth century. Today, peaches are the third largest commercial fruit crop being sold in the United States, with California being the leader in their production. True wild peaches can only be found in China and unlike the cultivated fruit, the wild fruit is small, sour and very fuzzy. review
