2 St. Croix County 4-H Day Camps June 15 & August New Richmond June 16 & August Baldwin Registration forms due by: June 9 Are you looking for a day full of lively learning and adventure? Join St. Croix County 4- H at the 4-H School of Magic, Wizardry, and Imagination! Youth (Kindergarten through 3rd grade) will participate in two different day camps filled with fun hands on learning, games, songs, and snacks. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet and engage with youth from around the county. Camps will be held in New Richmond and Baldwin. The cost of registration is $5.00 for one camp or $8.00 for both camps and includes all activities and snacks. All youth need to bring a bag lunch. Non 4-H youth are welcome and encouraged to participate. 5 Fruity Frozen Yogurt Snacks Ingredients: 1 containers of Greek yogurt, any flavor: strawberry, coconut, lemon, lime, blueberry 3 tablespoons fresh fruit: raspberries, mangos, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries, strawberries Directions: Place 10 silicon cups on a small baking sheet. Spoon half of the yogurt carton into 10 silicone cupcake wrappers. Sprinkle fresh fruit on the top of each cup of yogurt. Transfer the baking sheet into freezer. Freeze yogurt for 3 hours, or until firm. Remove the silicon cups when ready to serve. Enjoy. Did you ever wonder what gets a flower to bloom or why grass grows. Plants need sunlight, soil, clean air, and water to help them become strong, healthy plants. A recycled CD case will become a mini-greenhouse where radish seeds will sprout into seedlings right before your eyes! Supplies Needed: 4-5 radish seeds 1 plastic CD case (one side clear) Permeant markers Scissors Paper towels Sprout Journal (paper & pencil) Water Advanced Preparation: Soak radish seeds in water overnight. Pre-cut paper towels to fit inside CD case. Fill a large bowl with water. Instructions: Use a marker to write on the outside of the CD case (child s name, type of seeds, date planted). Wet paper towel by dipping it into the bowl. Squeeze water out so the towel is damp but not dripping. Put the paper towel in the CD case. Place 4-5 radish seeds on top of the paper towel. Space them a few inches apart for room to grow. Close the CD case to seal the mini-greenhouse. Tell youth to place the CD case in a sunny spot at home. Have them observe their plants daily and write or draw what they see happening in their Sprout Journal. Questions You Can Ask Youth: 1.) What do you need to grow? 2.) What do you think a plant needs to grow? 3.) Have you planted seeds before? 4.) What did you plant and what happened? 5.) How many days to do you think it will take for your seeds to grow? Share / Reflect: Encourage youth to draw or write in their Sprout Journals. What did they learn from their observations?

6 Learning with Robots Adapted from: Sally McClaskey, OSU Extension My 7 year old great-nephew recently wrote out a detailed birthday wish list. Among his requested,, video games, Hot Wheels, Legos and TV in my room. was robot. Now, Sully and I are more than a few decades apart in age, but our childhood view of a robot is remarkably similar. I grew up the The Jetsons and what kid would not want a Rosie to do all their chores? Sully s idealized robot is also a workhorse, not only capable of housework, but homework and even keeping a pesky little brother at bay! On one hand, introducing children to robotics seems easy enough. The current generation of 6-9 year olds have grown up with Gameboys and LeapPads, not to mention their parent s smart phones and ipads. Certainly the mechanics of robotics is just the next step in their technologic growth. We can give children a robot to play with and like any interactive toy, they will learn how to manipulate it and eventually learn its capabilities. But by guiding that discovery and making it a more gradual process you can make the experience much more meaningful and significant, Here is what some educational researchers suggest when it comes to introducing robotics to young children: Learn by designing meaningful projects to share in the community Use concrete objects to build and explore the world Use ideas that are personally significant Use self-reflection as part of the learning process You can search the Internet to find many kid-friendly, easy to use robots and robotics kits for children, and by guiding the interaction and using these ideas, you can make a child s robotic discovery an exciting and meaningful learning experience. Also, check with your local Extension Office to find out what robotics resources they might have.
