1 The Angmering School Weekly News This is our weekly newsletter for parents, students and friends of the school. We want to give you news about what is happening in school, exciting things, future events and things we would like to see happen. The evening is designed to look at skills and information that will help your child learn. At least 17 different sessions are available for you to choose from. However we have grouped them so that some are focused on year 7 and new entrants looking to understand how and why we do things; some for year 8 and 9 parents interested in ensuring good progress, and lastly a group particularly suited to year 10 and 11 parents whose focus is on success at GCSE. So whilst you can choose any of the 17 it is advisable to target those linked to your son/daughter s year group. To find out about the sessions and indicate your preferences, visit The Angmering School website and click on the link provided. The number and type of sessions may be subject to a degree of change as a consequence of demand or parental suggestion but we will let you know nearer to the event itself. If you have a problem with the link you can us indicating your intention to come or ring us to find out more. Finally please come along and enjoy the evening. It promises to be fun and informative. It would be great to have some parental help. 2 Inspirational author Marcus Alexander took the Angmering School by storm this week when he came to tell us about his Keeper of the Realms series. We were amazed at all the incredible places he has visited all over the world and revolted by some of the exotic foods he has tried (grasshoppers, anyone?) Caving, snowboarding, skydiving, scuba diving you name an extreme sport and he s probably tried it! Marcus has even invented a new sport called K Changa which is played by the characters in his books and is a combination of the Brazilian sport Capoeira, Takrow from Thailand and Chinlone from the Asian Golden Triangle. Marcus enjoyed taking part in a Parkour (free running) session with Years 8 and 11 which was organised by Miss Hathaway and her Sixth Form Sports Leaders, with special thanks to Phil Jones. Apparently Marcus wowed them all with his spectacular moves: He was flipping all over the place! said Miss Hathaway. Marcus encouraged us all to achieve our ambitions and explained how important it is to work hard with our reading and do more after school than just play on the Xbox! A huge thanks for the invite and the opportunity to work with the students at Angmering School. From Parkour sessions with year 7 to the writing workshops I thoroughly enjoyed it all! For those that did join the writing sessions please continue with your efforts; you showed great promise and thrust forth some truly unique ideas and an amazing ability to think outside the box. Talents like this, even if you don t enter the publishing industry, will always serve you well and give you the opportunity to stand head and shoulders above the competition no matter what your career. 3 TIA FREEMAN Congratulations Tia Freeman from 10HM, has been successful enough to secure a place in the South East England Under 15s Girls Basketball team. At only 14 years of age, she is a year younger than the teams age category. Tia travelled to Nottingham last week to play in the Regional Under 15s Girls Tournament. The South East did fantastically well and came 2 nd out of the 10 regions that played in the Tournament. Her father Mark said Tia had a fantastic tournament. Mr Yates said : Well done to Tia Freeman in Y9 who represented the South East Region in a National Tournament where they were runners up. Well done to Tia who played outstandingly. Well done to Tia and the South East Under 15 Girls Basketball Team. YEAR 9 GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM Well done to the year 9 girls for beating The Littlehampton Academy and Our Lady of Sion School in their first games of the season. Scores: The Angmering School vs. TLA : 32-0 The Angmering School vs. Sion B : 20-0 The Angmering School vs. Sion A : 6-3 Gold Stars of the week is a reward system where teachers nominate students for working consistently at Gold standard which is above and beyond expectations. Students then have the opportunity to meet with the Headship team to discuss their achievements and work. The students are rewarded with 25 credits and a well done letter to take home to share their success with parents/guardians. We feel this is an excellent reward system for the students to share their success with the Headship team. Congratulations to Olivia Gregory (7SK) and Oliver Burgess (7SK) who were this week s Gold Stars of the Week.

4 What's Going On Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning The World's Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support's biggest charity fundraising event. Thank you to all the staff who baked a cake for the World's Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support and to all the staff who supported the sale. We raised and a cheque will be sent off shortly to the charity.

What's Going On Reminder We have an additional Open Morning on Thursday 2 October with a tour at 9.15am and Mr Brixey is available after the tour for questions.

6 What's Going On Remembrance Garden Calling all students, parents, carers, friends, neighbours and the Angmering Community. Are you free on Saturday 4th October from 10am - 3pm or part of the day? Why not come along to the Angmering School and help us with our Remembrance Garden. This is to commemorate the anniversary of the First World War. We envisage this to be a place for students to find peace and quiet in what is usually a busy environment. It will be used not only to observe WW1 but also for reading and DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) in the summer. The garden will be a work in progress and will be added to over the next few years. On Saturday we aim to create a path with wheelchair access and start work on a sensory garden. No need to confirm you are coming just please turn up. If you have a shovel, spade or a wheelbarrow then please bring this with you. We will be laying a type 1 sub base for the pathway and from noon will be planting flowers. Bring a packed lunch but tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. Please park in the school car park and not near the garden area to allow access. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there. 7 Sports & Activity Clubs

Its that time of year again; the Netballs are out! Angmering Year 11 arrived at Durrington ready to represent their school in their last ever Netball league.

It was clear Durrington were well prepared as Angmering were often second to the ball. Regardless of the score Angmering continued to battle and dust off their cobwebs.

The first team they came across was Durrington HS. The game started fast leaving a rusty Angmering side in the dust. It was clear Durrington were well prepared as Angmering were often second to the ball. Regardless of the score Angmering continued to battle and dust off their cobwebs. Angmering soon remembered the basics, passing became positive, movement became tactical and Angmering were able to fight for one goal leaving the final score as a 10-1 defeat. The next school to face were Worthing HS; who also looked well prepared. The game again started fast and it looked as if the same thing could happen again trailing 7-1. However, Angmering started to bite back, they began intercepting the ball and began working the channels. With the new found positive play the come back looked reachable. The girls dug in deep, communicated well and fought back to an epic 8-7 victory- Worthing were left stunned. The following week Angmering arrived at Durrington ready to face The Littlehampton Academy. It was clear the girls had received specialist Netball training (Thanks Miss Potter) as they started strong ensuring their runs were diverse and unpredictable. There were some great interceptions from Abby, Amelia and Mel allowing the ball to go straight back into the attack. Laura and Beth were on form, missing few shots even with the wind strong across. Beth and Becky battled hard and communicated in the centre third ensuring counter attacks were effective and speedy. A professional 5-2 victory- Well done Ladies. Player of the Match Melissa Hess

9 Solution to last week s challenge : In order to be a multiple of 6, a number must be both even and a multiple of 3. Of the numbers given, only (b) and (d) are even. 10 DIARY DATES Reminder that all the school dates are on the front page of the school website on the calendar or copy this link: THINGS TO REMEMBER LABELLING UNIFORM Please make sure your child s uniform, PE kit and coat are labelled. We have quite a lot of uniform in lost property which is not named. Any uniform which is named is returned to students. If the uniform is not named then it will remain in Lost Property for three months and will then be sold in the Nearly New Shop. Lost Property is open for students to look for items on Tuesday and Thursday at break time each week. Parents can view lost property when the Nearly New Uniform shop is manned. The shop is next open on Wednesday 1 October from 3.30pm to 4.30pm and then on Saturday 1 November from 10am - 11am. AEROSOLS ARE BANNED AT SCHOOL This is a reminder that aerosol deodorants, hairsprays etc are not allowed in school. We must insist that these are not brought onto the school site. LEAVING THE SCHOOL SITE AT LUNCHTIME We prefer all students to stay on school site at lunchtime. This is safer for them and they can see friends and attend the many clubs on offer. In special circumstances permission to leave will be considered but permission must be requested from the Year Team Leader.
