Issue Date: Week June 2018 The Parallel Youth Games 2018 The biggest multi sports event was upon us again and on 23rd May, 38 students attended the K2, Crawley to compete in their respective sports. The day was stunning and the outside events competed under blazing sun. All of the tennis, golf and cricket teams competed well and showed excellent teamwork and superb sportsmanlike behaviour. Our biggest outdoor success was our football team who absolutely smashed it, winning every single game- cruising through the group stages, dominating their semi and playing a very tight final which they won on penalties. A huge result and well deserved gold medals: well done boys. So to the indoor events. The boccia team started slowly and took a while to gel. Once up and running they played more cohesively and started to put pressure on their opponents. They scraped through the groups into a bronze medal match which they unfortunately lost on the last ball, but a young team who will definitely improve in future years. The NAK team were on fire from the off, a united team with excellent communication and interaction resulting in great decision making and secured them the gold medal. Into the pool where again we dominated the C classification with Kiri and Fin both taking Gold in their respective races. Emily competing in the B classification took a hard fought silver and finally Cody competing in the open classification smashed it with two very well deserved bronze medals. Cont d

The day was finished off with our excellent dancers showcasing their group choreographed dance- a fantastic way to end a very enjoyable and successful day. Overall a fantastic day- well done to the whole squad. 3 Worthing Children s Parade The School was involved in this year s Worthing Children s Parade. The theme was Harry Potter so the Art students decided to do a Thestral which is a breed of winged horse with a skeletal body, face with reptilian features, and wide, leathery wings that resemble a bat s. They are very rare and can only be seen by those who have seen Death. They appear frightening but are harmless in Harry Potter. Miss Wood, Art Teacher, said A team of Art Ambassadors worked vigilantly creating their costumes. It was hot and stuffy but everyone managed to stay cool and collected. Maximum effort was made. I am a very happy Art teacher. Jazmin Ramsbotham Y8 said I thought it was very exciting taking part in the parade and I felt very proud showing our work to the public. I also enjoyed walking through the town and hearing people go wow look at that one! Lily Wells Y9 said We had fun at the parade. Most people walked with the float whilst three friends and I carried the float all the way round. It was fun seeing everyone cheering us on and seeing familiar faces as well as seeing all the other amazing floats around us! It was overall an amazing time!

Ellie Gordon Y9 said I had a great time creating the Thestral and the accessories to complete the look. It was quite tricky keeping the Thestral from flying away on the seafront but the parade was highly enjoyable seeing what everyone else made too. Alice Carr (Y7) and Daisy Ballantyne (Y7) said It was a fabulous day with lots of great costumes and other creations from all the schools. The parade was fun and we enjoyed taking part in it. Our Thestral was very realistic and looked like the real thing which we were very proud of making with the rest of the team. Isobel Martinucci Y7 said I thought that the parade was exciting as we saw lots of teachers and as the Thestral was announced at the end everyone cheered. It was a fun experience and I hope we get to do it next year. Daniel Keyse Y8 said I really enjoyed the parade because the atmosphere was amazing and it really brought everyone together to celebrate the Harry Potter theme! I would definitely take part again. A huge thank you to all the students, staff and parents who came and showed support for the students and staff, it was greatly appreciated! An even bigger thank you to Miss Wood and Mrs Alden for all their hard work in creating the amazing Thestral and organising the students. It was an excellent event to be part of and the students loved it! The school is very proud of you all.

The Angmering Careers Fair 8th November 2018 The Angmering School Careers Fair will be held this year on November 8th 2018 between 4 pm and 7 pm. We would like to invite parents or carers to have a stand with their businesses or companies and take part in this successful bi-annual event. We seek to provide a platform to promote sectors of employment and education, increasing awareness of the range of jobs within organisations and the qualifications and pathways needed to reach final job destinations for our students. If you feel you are able to support us in this venture please sfoster@theangmeringschool.co.uk or contact me on my direct line Thank you in anticipation. Susan Foster

Y7 Success! Olivia Burvill-Patching 7SPO competed in the NDP Regional Trampoline, Tumbling & DMT Team Finals (RTF) 2018 held over the weekend of 16/17 June at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. Olivia had successfully qualified through earlier rounds and was representing the South East region. The top two gymnasts from each region went through to the RTF. Olivia completed 4 passes and finished in 1st place in the NDP level 3, Girls DMT. She was presented with her gold medal by Kat Driscoll. Olivia will go on to compete in the National NDP Trampoline, Tumbling & DMT Finals 2018 in Nottingham 7-8 July, where she will be representing her club, Sky High, rather than the South East region. Well done Olivia! The school is so proud of her for all her achievements and managing to combine such a rigorous training schedule with her school work.

Aerosol deodorants, hairsprays etc are not allowed in school, including water based aerosols. We do insist that these are not brought onto the school site. We have had another instance this week where one has been sprayed. Please be aware we have staff and students who have asthma and this is dangerous to them. Aphthong (plural aphthongs) (phonology) A letter or combination of letters employed in spelling a word but not pronounced. The letters "gh" in "knight" are an aphthong. PACKED LUNCHES FOR SCHOOL TRIPS If you are entitled to free school meals and are going on a school trip you can order a packed lunch from the canteen to take with you. They can offer a sandwich, drink and cookie. If you want to take this offer up then please speak to the canteen staff the day before your trip to order.

Can you solve this week s problem? A Leg to Stand On In the Soft Boulder Cafe each table has 3 legs, each chair has 4 legs and all the customers and the three members of staff have two legs each. There are four chairs at each table. At a certain time, three-quarters of the chairs are occupied by customers and there are 206 legs altogether in the cafe. How many chairs does the cafe have? How did you get on with last week s challenge? Different Digital Clock A digital clock uses two digits to display hours, two digits to display minutes and two digits to display seconds, e.g. 10:23:42. How many times between 10:00:00 and 11:00:00 on the same morning are all six digits different? Solution All six digits are different 360 times between 10 :00 :00 and 11 :00 :00. To satisfy the stated condition, the display will have the form 10 :m1m2 :s1s2. The values of both m1 and s1 have to be chosen from 2, 3, 4, 5. So there are four ways of choosing m1 and three choices for s1. Since four digits have been chose, m2 and s2 are selected from the remaining six. Thus the total number of times is =360.

Rounders Area League Win for Y8 Girls A big congratulations to the Year 8 rounders team for winning the area league in spectacular fashion this week! The semi finals saw us play Steyning and we lost the toss and had to bat first which is always nerve wracking. We batted superbly, showing great tactical awareness and ability and scored a respectable 7.5 rounders. We had to hold our nerve in the field and did this convincingly, only allowing Steyning to score 1 rounder in 31 balls to take us to the final! The finals saw us play Durrington who had previously beaten us by just half a rounder so the atmosphere was tense! This time we had the luck of the toss and got to bat second so that we knew the score we needed to beat. In the field, we got off to a shaky start but managed to regain our composure and even with Rachel taking a hit to the head with an opposition bat, we managed to hold Durrington to just 6.5 rounders which gave us a great chance to take the win. We went into bat and managed to start building our score with some cheeky running to put the opposition under pressure and force errors along with some big hits. The score was level with just five balls remaining, which to be honest, was more than I could take! The girls like to leave it until the last ball. Emily came up to bat, and although it wasn t a big hit, she put the fielders under pressure again and forced an error which secured the winning half a rounder. After that, the score then continued to climb so that the final result was 9.5 to 6.5 rounders. It has been a great league which has seen a few new additions to the team and enabled all the girls to show their true potential and it has been a pleasure to coach the team. Thank you for all your hard work and commitment to training and games. Very well done to all! Miss Potter
