21st June 2018 Weekly Digest THIS WEEK S TOP STORIES Leavers Day Celebrations This is what makes us so proud of Northease, how each individual develops whilst being here with us. We have seen some students grow from the early years from being timid, nervous children into the confident individuals they are today, ready to move on as young adults moving on to pastures new. The ceremony was one full of laughter and of course a few tears as we watched the photos scroll by on the screen, depicting all the happy memories we have shared along the way.
The ceremony included a heartfelt speech from Sam W, Head Boy: I don t think anyone who knew me when I arrived at Northease, five and a half years ago, thought that I would be standing up in front of you today making a speech as Head Boy. I was quiet, shy and nervous about making mistakes. So what have I learned since then? I learnt how to be sociable - and I don't just mean on Social Media... Year 10s! How to talk to people and not to be nervous. I learnt about hard work. For any of you who don t know what hard work is like, try Miss Tuxford s English Lessons! Miss Day, you're even worse! I learnt about how to keep going, even when things are going a bit wrong. D of E Expedition need I say more?! I learnt about always having a sense of humour. Like our very own Rounders Ballerina, Mr Reeves! But the most important thing I learnt was about FRIENDSHIP I ve met some great people. And I ve made some great friends. And I think that will last forever. Head Girl, Gabrielle W also took to the stage with a marvellous poem: 'Goodbye Northease' It's time to say goodbye to Northease Manor School, It's a very, very special place, and really rather cool! I'll miss the lovely dinners, they really are so great. I'm always first in the queue, and always clean my plate! I'll really miss the teachers, they work so hard all day, teaching us all sorts of things in an easy to understand way. My D of E experience was really such great fun, walking up and down steep hills, and camping in the sun. Our leader Mr Donnelly encourages us each day, He gives us maps to help us not get lost along the way. He supports the gunners, which really is quite bad, they often lose so we can laugh when he is feeling sad! There's always something fun to do at Northease Manor School, I've done singing, acting, swimming and much, much more. So many happy memories I'm going to miss them all for sure. Northease is so special, everyone unique and kind. We all support each other, a real community is what you'll find. Thank you Northease Manor School for helping me in every way, for giving me the skills to thrive, and be a better person every day. I'll never forget my time here, seven years gone by, it's true! all that's left to say right now is a very big THANK YOU! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who joined us on the day to help make the event a memorable occasion for our Year 11s. Thank you also to the catering staff for such a lovely lunch, to Mrs Carr for producing the photo discs and to both Mrs Carnegie and Mrs Hylands for the Leavers books which are individualised keepsakes. We will look forward to welcoming those returning in September to join our Sixth Form. Good luck to those who leave us, keep striving to fulfil your true potential and please do stay in touch. More than one send off for Year 11 With exams coming to a welcome end on Monday it was time to start the Year 11 celebrations. With no time to waste, four teachers and 21 students set off to Thorpe Park. Sadly, there are no photos as they were having too much fun! The trip was funded by the money raised at the Christmas enterprise fair.
Artistic Flair Here is a selection of the fabulous work our Year 10 students are producing. The shoe images are by Bel. The watercolour paintings are part of her mini mock exam work based on the starting theme 'ARRANGEMENTS '. Jake is shown creating a polyboard print ready for his mini mock piece based on the starting theme, 'FLOWERS'. Finn and Morgan are shown working on their monoprint designs. Northease Represent Sussex at the National Table Cricket Finals Wow, what a day for the Juniors! Seven very sleepy children arrived for a 7am start to set off to the infamous Lord s Cricket Ground. After three previous gruelling rounds they made the National Finals and were there not only to represent Northease Manor to but to represent the whole of the Southeast region. It took us three hours to reach our destination and the Juniors kept themselves busy playing games and watching Back to the Future whilst on the bus. We arrived at Lord s and were escorted to a huge hall that was full of people and table cricket tables set up ready for the tournament. We were introduced to Jeff who was to be our guide for the day; it was his job to make sure that the team knew when their matches were and where we had to go to play them. The Juniors were a little overwhelmed by the venue and were made to feel even more nervous as the compere announced that our first game was against the reigning champions! The long bus journey had taken its toll a little, along with the news of the strength of our first opponents, the team could not quite find their A-game for the first match a took a loss of 263 runs to 182. However, we still had four games to play and knew that there was still all to play for. Our next opponent was Greenfield school who had travelled all the way from Wales to participate. It was a really close game and went to the final batsman but the Northease Team could not quite catch Greenfield and it finished with 248 runs to Greenfield and 239 runs to Northease. This left the team feeling a little blue as this was the first time that they
had faced two successive losses in a row in any tournament. There were a few tears of frustration but then in a way that only Lily could, she gave the team a pep talk and demanded that the team fight back. This team talk clearly had an impact as the Northease team kept the opponents score low with some excellent fielding and catches made by Matty and Ashley. The team then stepped up to bat and with consistent hitting by Izzy and some 6s scored by Harry the team took their first victory with a huge score of 297 runs to 216. The team were now feeling really positive and wanted to keep up their winning streak. They were facing St Mary s who were another school that had travelled wide and far all the way from East Yorkshire! It was great to see during this game, Lily and Ashley high-fiving as they ensured some quick reactions in their fielding and all of the team looking positive both when fielding and in bat. Eran even stepped up in bat and scored 4 runs on every hit. This was another big win for Northease with a finishing score of 277 runs to 240. The team then had a well-deserved lunch break and a chance to rest and re-fuel. The final game of the round was against Thomas Wolsey. This was a frustrating game for the team as there were some questionable decisions by the umpire who couldn t quite make up his mind what the scores were. This frustration led to a defeat for the team in a game that they should have easily won. It was then time to wait to see what position we would play for in the play-offs. The team finished 3 rd in their pool and were set to play for a 5 th or 6 th position in the tournament. They were not put off by their previous defeat and winning was the only option for the final game. They demonstrated some strategic fielding and some strong and accurate batting which enabled them to take a win in their final game. The tournament then finished with a closing ceremony where all the teams were congratulated and they proudly collected their medals for finishing in 5 th place overall. This is an amazing achievement as this is not just 5 th in the tournament but was 5 th in the entire country! It was great that the team had so much support with Mrs Cross Brown, Mrs Hylands and Ms Farmer who came all the way to London to support the team. They really have made me the proudest PE teacher, the Juniors demonstrated kindness, resilience, positivity and exceptional teamwork. These are all qualities that I would never have predicted the Juniors being able to achieve so well back in September. I look forward to seeing what they can do next year when we will hopefully once again fight for the trophy. Sixth Form Trip to Longleat The Sixth Form students went on a trip to Longleat on Monday. All students were looking forward to seeing all the animals, especially the monkeys. We left Northease at 7am and picked up Zoe, Matt and Michael on the way. It was a long drive to Longleat, which is in Wiltshire. It took around about 3 and half hours. We arrived at about 10.30am and we went straight into the safari park. We fed the giraffe leaves in the African village, but it was so greedy that it snatched it from our hands. Then we drove into the park to see the rest of the animals. When we were driving we saw the zebras they were very all lying down. Then we went to the monkey world monkeys climbed over the minibus and rode on the roof. One monkey was on there for whole time that we were in monkey world. The monkeys were quite wild and naughty. After this we fed the deer, they came up close to the minibus and we also saw the camels. Our next encounter was the big cats, first was tigers, then lions, then cheetahs and then timber wolves. The tigers were quite scary. We had a picnic lunch during which Michael fell asleep! We were not with the animals then. The next stage of our adventure was a riverboat trip. We saw and fed some sea lions, pelicans, gorillas and hippos. We fed the sea lions, they were very quick and agile.after this we went to look around the house. The house was interesting and had portraits of people who lived in the house. After this we got back on the bus and drive home and stopped off at Pizza Hut and had a lovely meal all together. All staff and students had a great trip and everyone enjoyed the day, but what happened at Longleat, stays at Longleat so we can t tell you everything! By Zoe and Pat, Sixth Form
Mr Gardener-Blatch gets Splashed Mr Gardener-Blatch, our very own Dungeons and Dragons Master and Sixth Form Practitioner, proved himself a good sport when he agreed to be soaked by the students! He was acting out a role in JOK's short coursework film clip for Media. The children all enjoyed seeing Andrew get wet, including Rhys (his son)! Next week s Menu
