Slips and Skids Oct 2014 Leader Report By Stan Turner It wasn't the reward that mattered or the recognition you might harvest. It was your depth of commitment, your quality of service, the product of your devotion -- these were the things that counted in life. When you gave purely, the honor was in giving, and that was honor enough. --Captain Scott O'Grady Wings Over Houston is only a couple of weeks away. This is our big show fellow volunteers, and we need everyone to help out. The Houston Wing will have three main PXs, the award winning dog tag machine, and the C-60/BT-13 on static display. Additionally, we will be selling aircraft flights in our trainers on Friday and Saturday before and after the show is over. If you can spare one day or even part of a day and you don t have an assignment, please contact Bob Linguiti (PX), Tammi Lockwood (rides and dog tag) or Ulf Brynjestad (C-60) to help out. The dates are November 1 and 2 with the Navy s Blue Angels as the headliner. Advanced ticket sales are up this year compared to the last time we had the Blue Angels so we can expect big crowds again This is our major fundraiser for the year so now is the time to step up and help out the Wing. The Wing museum continues to set records as more and more guests show up on alternating Saturday s to view our aircraft and war memorabilia. If you are at the hanger working and guests show up, remember to keep an eye out for excited children around the aircraft. Some of the parents have been seen sitting their 3 and 4 year-olds on the wing of the N3N or PT-19 to take pictures. Kindly remind them this is not allowed and can cause damage to the wing s leading edge. Thunderduck is rugged and a good place for the children to sit and play pilot. LEADER Page 4 Newsletter for the Houston Wing Commemorative Air Force Operations Report By John Cotter Here we are in October with Wings over Houston fast approaching. We have participated in a fly-in and pilot training continues at the Wing. On Saturday, October 4, the Wing participated in the LaPorte Airplane and Auto Show. We sent the PT-19, AT-6 and our privately owned T-28. The crowd was light with minimal PX and Historic Flight sales. Even though the sales were very light, it was good to support this event as they were raising funds to provide care packages for troops. But we did leave with trophies for 2 nd place (T-28) and 3 rd place (PT-19) in the airplane category. As you already know, Arne Aamodt recently checked out in the PT19 and is building some time in the airplane in order to be our next Instructor pilot for that airplane allowing the training load to be shared with Mike and Gale. Nathan Harnagel also has started flight training in the N3N. I expect that Nathan will soon complete his training adding to our N3N pilot pool. Lastly I would like to offer congratulations to Ole Nygren for passing his check ride and receiving his Type rating for the B17. We both took our check rides on September 29. 2 Slips and Skids October 2014 Page 2 Hangar/PX Report By Bob Linguiti Although it lasted just a few short days, there can be no doubt that we have experienced a recent hint of autumn. Nighttime and early morning temperatures have been, if not exactly cool, at least refreshingly nonsweat-inducing. Today, as an added treat, we were able to witness a total eclipse of the moon, always an event worth watching and one without the threat of retinal damage. The sky was remarkably clear, too, and even not-so-keen observers should have spotted an abundance of stars, a rarity in ground-light-heavy Houston and environs. (In a change of direction, I am pleased to report that my Navy veteran daughter, her active duty husband, and the two hounds have arrived safely at their new duty station in Honolulu and are actively seeking a residence.) As Sam Hoynes will almost certainly be reporting, our museum has been enjoying a prolonged surge of visitors over the past half dozen open Saturdays. Crowds have consistently numbered more than seventy to eighty, sometimes even exceeding one hundred per day. This is a far cry from the modest dozen (or fewer) that usually visited our hangar in months past. The increase has given rise to some parking issues, as well as creating a challenge for the toofew docents who have been struggling to keep the flow orderly and safe. In addition to our tour guides, all members present on these museum days need to be mindful of stray visitors, generally inquisitive, sometimes unaccompanied, and, especially amongst the younger crowd, occasionally incautious. We are going to test a new guide model for managing these large crowds, but, again, as I am sure Sam will announce, we have a decided need for more docents: members with some available time on Saturdays, who feel they will enjoy learning, then talking about the planes and the museum displays that we are proud to present. Wings Over Houston is now less than a month away and, while I truly appreciate the members that have already stepped up and volunteered for PX and dog tag assignments, more help is needed. Please consider doing a stint at one of the PX venues (or the dog tag operation) and let me know the day or the time of day you will be available. The air show is our really big event really big shew as Ed Sullivan used to say and we need to do all that we can to make the week-end a success. Thank you, in advance, for your efforts. Keep the tools, chairs, power cords, chocks, etc. put away when not in use especially near the front of the hanger. Grab a rag and wipe up oil spots on the floor when you see them. Our radial engines leak oil that is their nature. Clean up and dispose of your food containers and drinks when you are finished. Sweep the floor. We can all help out in keeping our hanger sparkling. Congratulations to John Cotter and Ole Nygren on passing their B-17 check ride and adding a new type rating to their pilot certificates. The Gulf Coast Wing s B-17 Texas Raiders now has two new pilots. Arne and me at the LaPorte Airplane and Auto show. Photo by Sam Bulger The Houston Wing has had a very busy summer. September activities slowed down a little, Jim Placette has all of the aircraft in flying condition and the summer weather has finally broken. The cool days are here. I want to thank everyone for their time and dedication to the Houston Wing and the CAF. As always, let s keep having fun. LaPorte Airplane and Auto Show Photo by Sam Bulger Keep em flying-

Slips and Skids October 2014 Page 5 From The Maintenance Desk By Jim Placette As you all know looming in the very near future is the biggest event this unit holds. For that event the maintenance department steps up all efforts. I am happy to report that this year we are on track for a 100% effort. The AT-6A is in fine shape and ready to go. The BT- 13A is finally coming around, and the engine is running normally again. I will also have the vacuum system modified and corrected before the air show. This will put both cockpit gyros in working condition. In case you have not looked, the BT now has a full rear instrument panel, and it is configured like it would be in World War II. The N3N-3 is finally getting enough flight time to show some troubles, but none have been major, and she is ready to go. It is nice to see her flying again and often. The PT-19A is still having some brake problems, but I am looking into that. The C-60 will be getting a replacement co-pilot artificial horizon. She will also get some new rivets in the roof and a few other areas. Also Stan Turner's T-28C is undergoing inspection. Also this month is clean the aircraft month. All our airplanes need to be show ready for the big air show. The C-60 will have her underside pressure washed on the 19th. The smaller trainers will be wiped down inside the hangar. It is not a hard job to "sponge bathe" an aircraft topside. I plan to work on bellys and the really oily areas. I could use some help. We will be cleaning airplanes after the 19th Wing meeting until they are all clean. Come out any evening and grab a rag and help. I am there most evenings until the show. After Wings Over Houston, we take a little break for a week and start the BT inspection after Veteran's day weekend. Also you will be pleased to hear the Houston Wing's Third Annual Hangar Dance will be on Sat 21 Feb There will be some schedule changes to the dance, and we will be offering a swing dance crash course at Dinner from 1800 to whenever and dance from 1830 to We open at 1700 next year. I do hope to see you on our dance/hangar floor.

Slips and Skids October 2014 Page 6 Hangar Housekeeping By Steve Sehnert With the increased tempo of activity in the hangar, it s become time for a little reminder about housekeeping and cleanliness. We ve started to get a bit sloppy with cleaning up after ourselves and the airplanes. This is especially important with the success of the weekend museum openings. We are getting many more visitors, and it doesn t reflect well upon us when there is trash on the floor, oil puddles randomly scattered about, and every flat surface is piled high with parts, tools, trash, and who-know-what. It takes very little effort to clean up as we go along. Danno constructing L-17 panel When you have trash (packing material, tape, empty containers, etc.), throw it away. We have many trash cans; it s not a long walk to the nearest one. If you leave it on a table or workbench, sooner or later it will end up on the floor. Remember that cans, glass, plastic, and clean paper can go into the recycle bins. When you see oil on the floor, wipe it up! We will always have puddles under the airplanes, but there is no reason to have one in the middle of the floor for more than a few minutes. If you see a puddle, wipe it up. And as for the puddles under an airplane, here s a hint if you wipe them up BEFORE you roll the plane out, you won t turn a puddle into a trail! Tailwheels have a natural attraction to oil puddles. Many of our projects take longer than a single afternoon or evening at the hangar. Even though you will be resuming work in a day or two, take the minute to gather all the items you are working with and put away things that you re no longer using (and throw away any trash). Items that others may need, such as ladders and tools, should be put away. Parts and fittings should be tagged or bagged so that they do not get misplaced or inadvertently discarded. We have lots of things going on; if you leave stuff scattered across a couple of tables, do not be surprised if you came back after a week or two and things have been moved or have disappeared. Finally, make sure that fans, lights, air conditioners, etc., are shut off when they are not being used. Several times over the summer our early arriver members have come into the hangar to find lights on, fans blowing, or the O Club or meeting room A/C going full blast (the museum A/C is intentionally left on to reduce the humidity in there). If you are the last one at the hangar, it is your responsibility to make sure things are shut down before you lock the door. 7 Slips and Skids October 2014 Page 7 Trail Life USA Troop 1230 By Sam Hoynes Saturday the 20th of September during our regular Open House we had a visit from Troup 1230 with Trail Life USA. The scout group consisted of over 40 people including 21 scouts and their family members. This was another very busy Saturday but I will admit having a group of 40 people come in along with our usual visitors stretched us a little thin covering all of our visitors. In addition to our usual museum volunteers, Jeremy Wright stepped in to give us much needed help. The last several Saturdays have been exceptionally busy and these crowds are giving our maintenance officer, Jim Placette, a nervous breakdown as he tries to keep our fleet in the air surrounded by people.

Slips and Skids October 2014 Page 8 Thunderduck By Sam Hoynes All of our members and visitors have walked around our smallest aircraft "Thunderduck" many times over the years. This small aircraft has been very popular in our hangar during Open House and Open Saturdays and always makes a surprising amount of money as people put their kids in it for a photo opportunity with or without its full wings attached. Recently I asked Don Johnson to interview Dieter Klein (long time West Houston Squadron and Houston Wing member) who donated Thunderduck to the West Houston Squadron years ago. The purpose of the interview was to document the history of this unusual Wing asset. Dieter told Don that it began as a homebuilt aircraft, the Watson GW-1 Wind Wagon, that was intended to be powered by a 1/2 Volkswagen engine. The original Wind Wagon was built in Newcastle, Texas by Gary Watson and was based on the Teenie Two and used the similar wing ribs that slipped onto the C spar. The fuselage was a tapered tube from the seat backward and from the seat to the firewall. The aircraft was equipped with tricycle undercarriage and a ½ VW engine. Continued to next page

First flown in 1977, the Wind Wagon measures 18 feet from wingtip to wingtip and it features allaluminum construction with pop rivets. The tricycle gear are non-retractable, but the wings are removable for storage or transportation. The power plant is a 900 cc half-volkswagen modified engine and drives a four-blade propeller. On just two cylinders top speed is 110 mph, and climb rate is 450 to 500 fpm. The wing features a Clark Y wing section with constant chord. There are conventional ailerons and no flaps. The fuselage is a conventional semi-monocoque structure made from popriveted aluminum full size Wind Wagon plans were available for $50 Engine: ½ VW, 30 hp Service ceiling: 10,000 ft Speed max: 110 mph Weight empty: 273 lbs Cruise: 90 mph Gross: 486 lbs Range: 300 miles Height: 4 ft Stall: 40 mph Length: 13 ft Climb rate: 500 fpm Wing span: 18 ft Take-off dist: 250 ft Seats: 1 Landing dist: 300 ft Fuel Capacity: 4 gal Landing gear: nose Sometime in the 1980's Colonel John Dazio, then a member of West Houston Squadron, brought Thunderduck on a trailer to Dieter intending for it to be used as a child's plane. Dieter commented that it had been poorly built and he made a number of repairs and built a canopy for it. Dazio gave it to Dieter who then donated it to the West Houston Squadron. The gear was moved inboard so that it would fit on a trailer. Later, Dieter found that a WHS member had made further modifications. Thunderduck was originally made in bare metal and Dieter painted it in the camouflage pattern that it displays today.
