1 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H Calendar September 4 Labor Day Extension Office Closed 5 Livestock Committee Meeting -7 pm 9 OSU vs Oklahoma 12 4-H Endowment Meeting - 6 pm 12 4-H Committee Meeting -7 pm 12 Buyers Banquet Reservations Due 16 OSU vs Army 19 Buyers Banquet at Rubel Park -7 pm 20 CARTEENS - 6 pm 23 OSU vs UNLV 25 Honeybee Meeting - 6 pm 30 OSU at Rutgers October 7 OSU vs Maryland 10 Sale Committee Rules Meeting -7 pm 14 Fall Festival at MC Fairgrounds 15 Fall Festival Ends 14 OSU at Nebraska 17 Volunteer Banquet Reservations Due 23 4-H Volunteer Banquet - 7 pm 28 OSU vs Penn State November 4 OSU at Iowa 9 Saddle Horse Committee Mtg. - 7 pm 10 Office Closed for Veterans Day 11 OSU vs Michigan State Now that summer is over and the county fair is past, we don t want to forget to thank the people who helped to make our 4-H year a success. We usually think about thanking our junior fair award sponsors and livestock sale buyers, which is very important, but don t forget to thank your 4-H club advisors and anyone else who helped you out along the way as well. Here are some tips for writing thank you notes: Use stationery or note cards- Avoid using full-size sheets of paper. Your message will be short, so there is no need for a full sheet of paper. Plan ahead- Think about what you want to say and put it in a logical order. You might even want to write a practice note first. Use blue or black ink- Avoid writing in colored ink, marker, or pencil. Handwritten notes are best- Even if your writing is not that good, the reader will appreciate your effort. Take your time and write as neatly as you can. Keep it short and simple. Steps to writing the note: 1) Greeting Example: Dear Mr. Smith, It is okay to address your note to a place of business if you don t know a specific person s name. 2) Express your Gratitude Example: Thank you so much for purchasing my 4-H market hog at the auction. From the smallest donation to the largest, each individual or company gives what they feel they are able to give. A sincere thank you note will go a long way toward making sure they include the 4-H program in their plans for next year s donations. Sponsorship does not just happen, it is something that donors budget and plan for all year long. 3) Discuss the Donation Example: My award sign will always be a great reminder of the day I won showmanship. Say something nice about what they donated. For livestock projects, you can tell what you plan to do with the money from your animal. You can include something personal here, like how many years you have been in 4-H, your plans for the future, etc 4) Thank them Again Example: Thanks again for supporting the 4-H program. It s not overkill to say thanks again. So say it. 5) Regards Example: Sincerely, Regards, Yours Truly, etc Simply conclude your note. Use whatever closing you prefer and sign your name. 6) Get it in the Mail Make sure the envelope is neatly addressed and use proper postage. Thank you notes should be sent as soon as possible after the donation or contribution was made. Adapted from: Taylor, K. (2017). Writing a Great Thank You Letter/Card. 2 One Final Opportunity!! Did you forget to pick up your fair premium during the fair? 4-H ers earn premiums (money) by exhibiting a still project in your club s booth, or exhibiting animals at the fair. 4-H Clubs also receive premiums for putting up a club booth or participating in the parade. These premiums are paid by the Senior Fairboard and designated times were setup during the fair. There will be one final opportunity to pickup the premiums on Thursday, September 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sr. Fairboard Office on the fairgrounds. Market Steer Weigh-In The Junior Fair Livestock Sale Committee has set Saturday, November 18 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. as a time for weigh-in and registration of Market Steers for the 2018 Monroe County Junior Fair. We need to know by November 13 if you are bringing Market Steers. Snow date will be December 2. Livestock Sale Checks If you are not able to attend the Buyers Recognition Banquet to pick up your sale check, they will be available at the Extension Office the day after the banquet. All checks must be cashed within 90 days to avoid a fee. Club Treasury Reports Due January 31, 2018 The club treasury report is now a calendar year report and will be mailed to head advisors after January 1st for completion. If you have any questions you can call Cheryl at Reminder to Pay for Jr. Fair Wristbands If your club has not paid for your Junior Fair Wristbands, please make your payment at the Senior Fairboard Meeting on September 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. or mail it to Monroe County Ag. Society, P.O. Box 111, Woodsfield. 4-H Youth in Action Awards What's your 4-H story? How has 4-H changed your life? How have you made a difference through 4-H? More information will be passed along as soon as dates are set. If you have any questions you can contact Angie or John Hupp at Buckeye Ticket Winner In the months of April and May many of the county 4-H ers are getting prepared for fair and learning about showing and caring for their animals. During that class the 4-H ers are asked to fill out a 4-H Endowment Pledge Card and for every $25 you pledge you will have that many entries entered in to a drawing for 2 OSU Football tickets. 3 Junior Fairboard Applications Due December 1 Applications for the Monroe County Junior Fairboard are now open to youth ages 13 and up. Youth that are currently a member of 4-H, FFA, FHA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, VICA, HERO, Grange, or Farm Bureau may apply for positions. Applications are available from the Ohio State University Extension office located in the Court House. The Junior Fairboard provides youth an opportunity to plan and conduct the Monroe County Junior Fair Program at the county fair with other youth from the county. Junior Fairboard members are responsible for a wide variety of events, activities, and shows as well as to work closely with the Monroe County Senior Fairboard. Youth interested in becoming Junior Fairboard members may also attend the Ohio Junior Fair Conference in Columbus during January. The conference allows youth to gain much knowledge of the Junior Fair program and responsibilities of the Junior Fairboard. All applications for the Monroe County Junior Fairboard must be received in the OSU Extension Office by December, December 1st. Sale of 4-H or FFA Projects Have Tax Implications Members of 4-H clubs or FFA chapters often raise livestock as part of the educational program of the club or chapter. The member may sell the livestock that was raised as part of the project at the end of the fair. This transaction raises a number of income tax issues for the 4-H or FFA member. Further information is included with your sale check. Monroe County awarded $200 from national Raise Your Hand initiative Monroe County youth programs are benefiting from Ohio s recent victory in the national 4-H Raise Your Hand competition. As one of 35 counties with the highest participation, Monroe County 4-H received $200 to use for youth programs. The state won $20,000 after more than 11,800 Ohio 4-H alumni participated in the initiative by visiting 4-h.org/raise-your-hand/ and let themselves be counted. This is great! The Raise Your Hand Campaign shows that many Ohioans have a strong, personal connection to 4-H, Ohio 4-H Foundation Board President Dale Arnold said. We look forward to working with them to enhance 4-H programs at local, regional and state levels. 4-H Lunchstand Report Thank you all for the hard work at the 4-H Lunchstand! The final bills were tallied and all bills paid and the final profit for the fair week was $5,500. This is a main source of operating money for the Monroe County 4-H Committee and is used throughout the year for achievement awards, 4-H Camp, trip scholarships, 4-H promotion, Cloverbud camp, project judging, etc. Thanks also to the 4-H Committee members that helped in making sure the lunch stand ran smoothly during the week of the fair. A final thank you goes to all the 4-H families for donating pop and working the food stand. October 23rd Banquet to Honor 4-H Volunteers This years Volunteer Banquet will be Monday, October 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. The evening will also reveal the Friend of 4-H Award, the Outstanding Service to 4-H Award, presentation of Volunteer Certificates, election of 4-H Committee Members and door prizes. Volunteers will be receiving invitations soon. The banquet is held at the Henri Coulson Building. Come on out and enjoy! Adopt-A-Cabin Refurbishment Campaign The 4 H Camp Piedmont Board has a goal of refurbishing all 14 cabins at the camp. The cabins have had new lighting and windows recently installed, but are still in need of many upgrades. Camp Piedmont is asking each of the 8 counties who use the camp to participate. The cost to refurbish a single cabin is $5,000. Refurbishment will include: New roof, walls, floors, ceilings, and doors. Contractors will be doing work under the leadership of the Maintenance Manager, John Gardner. The Monroe County 4-H Committee would like to raise and donate $5,000 for a cabin. The committee is encouraging ALL 4 H clubs to donate $300. Goal $5,000 If your club hasn t made a donation to the Cabin Campaign yet, please consider doing it now. Improvements at 4-H Camp Piedmont will benefit not only current 4-H members, but those who will use the camp after us! Raised to date $1,900 Club participation is currently at 30% 4-H Express 3 September-October 2017
