Allowing fear to stop you from Growing, Evolving, and Progressing. mindy hale Some of you may know I recently applied for the 4-H Educator position in Washington County. Following an application and interview process, I have accepted the 4-H Educator position with the Washington County Extension Office and will be starting in my new role on March 1 st. It has been almost 27 years since I started here in Monroe County, so it goes without saying that leaving an awesome group of 4-H volunteers, members, parents, community minded folks and staff will not be an easy transition for me. We do not plan to move immediately as Tyler will continue at Swiss Hills until 2017 and finish his time in the Monroe County 4-H program. As many of you know, our roots and family are in Washington County. This was an extremely difficult decision to make. However, I know that each of you will continue to move the program ahead with a unified goal of providing positive youth development in Monroe Co. As always, the OSU Extension staff is here ready to serve and answer your questions. This 4-H program has a lot of great things to offer Monroe County! As I reflect back over the years, I think about all the programs and changes that have occurred in the 4-H program. None of these changes and programs could have happened without a strong group of 4-H volunteers and committed families. I think about how our 4-H camps have grown and new camps have begun, learning to teach the successful co-parenting class, starting animal project judging and skillathons, recruiting volunteers to serve as project and skillathon key leaders, teaching Livestock Quality Assurance, getting the 4-H Endowment off the ground, expanding our Jr Fair barns and office on the fairgrounds, starting Carteens, and working with clientele and voters to provide levy funding for the local Extension Office. I have also seen a lot of lives changed throughout the years by 4-H.sometimes I think the one that changed the most was me. So you might be wondering what the next step is to fill my position. A local group of Extension supporters will conduct a program review to gather input and build a position description. At the earliest, if everything moves ahead on schedule the county could be conducting local interviews in May. I wish you all the best of luck as you move ahead, and know that I am only a phone call away if I can be of help. Sincerely, Bruce Zimmer Extension Educator 4-H Youth Development March 2016 Issue

Lambs and goats tagged with blue scrapie tags are confined to slaughter-only channels and cannot be used as 4-H project animals or exhibited at the fair. Do NOT purchase sheep and goats with the blue slaughter-only/meat scrapie tags as potential 4-H projects. Be aware that, in order to exhibit ewes or rams (lambs and adults) purchased at a livestock market, the animals must have arrived with an owner statement and official ID other than a blue slaughter-only / meat scrapie tag. Blue tagged animals CANNOT be used as projects or exhibited at the Fair! And, remember: it is unlawful to remove or tamper with official identification. Scrapie Tag for Lambs & Goats Scrapies is a fatal degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of sheep and goats. The United States Department of Agriculture s goal is to eradicate this fatal disease by tracking infected animals back to their flocks of origin of birth. An USDA scrapie ID tag will provide the information needed to track an infected animal. All lambs and goats attending the 2016 Monroe County Junior Fair will be required to have a USDA scrapie ID tag or tattoo. If you are planning to purchase lambs or goats from a producer make sure the producer s USDA scrapie ID tag has been placed in the animal s ear before you leave their facility. It is the breeders responsibility to make sure the USDA scrapie ID tags are in the animal. It is your responsibility as an exhibitor to make sure they already have a scrapies tag. ** If a breeder needs information about how to get scrapies tags, they can contact the Extension Office for the information.** 4-H Week Tab Thank you everyone that provided articles for the annual 4-H tab printed by the Monroe County Beacon. 6 Quality Assurance Test-out Option Monroe County will offer the test-out option again this year provided by Ohio Department of Agriculture. 4-H members can test-out of their annual QA session and be exempt from QA training for the up-coming years. Youth ages 12 and up (as of Jan.1) can opt to take a test rather than going through the QA session. Two versions are available: a large animal (including beef, sheep, swine, dairy and goats) and a small animal (including poultry and rabbits) as well as for two age groups: yrs old and yrs old. You will need to have knowledge of QA principles and general animal sciences. If a yr. old takes the test and passes, they are exempt from QA until they are 15 yrs. old. If a yr. old takes the test and passes, they no longer have to attend a QA session each year. Youth interested in the test-out option will take a 50 question, multiple-choice test. The passing grade is 70% (35 out of 50 correct answers). If a youth fails the test, then the youth must attend a regular QA program and return next year to try the test again. Members wishing to take the Ohio Quality Assurance test must register with the Extension Office prior to the test dates. Tests will be administered on all four dates. 4-H Express 6 Fundraiser For Camp Registration Fees For 2016 we will again be participating in two different fundraising events to help our youth attend 4-H camp.
