There are three types of adult honey bees in a hive: Workers- make up about 99% of a hive and are non-egg laying females; Drones- are male bees that are bigger in size than workers, but have no stinger; a Queen- is the largest of all the adult bees in the hive and is responsible for laying eggs to produce new bees. Worker Bee - All worker bees are female, but they are not able to reproduce. Worker bees live for several months during the winter season, but only about 45 days during the busy summer months (they literally work themselves to death). A hive consists of 60,000-80,000 bees in the summer, but only 20,000-30,000 bees in the winter. It takes 21 days for a worker bee to develop from egg to emergence. The worker bee takes on a series of specific chores during their lifetime: housekeeper; nursemaid; construction worker; undertaker; and guard. Finally, at the midpoint of their life (about 3 weeks of age) they become a forager collecting pollen and nectar which is made into honey. The worker bee has a barbed stinger, but she can only sting once. Stinging something results in her death. Drone Bee - There are only drones in a hive. The drone does not have a stinger. Drones are expelled from the hive in the autumn because they have no use during the winter months. New drones will be produced in the spring so egg fertilization takes place. Queen Bee - There is only one queen per hive. A queen bee can live for 3-5 years and lay up to 2000 eggs per day. Fertilized eggs become female (worker bees) and unfertilized eggs become male (drone bees). When she dies or becomes unproductive, the other bees will "make" a new queen by selecting a young larva and feeding it a diet of "royal jelly". Royal Jelly is a powerful, milky substance that turns an ordinary bee into a Queen Bee. It is made of digested pollen and honey or nectar mixed with a chemical secreted from a gland in a nursing bee's head and it is loaded with all of the B vitamins. Queen bees require 16 days from egg to emergence. Want to learn more about bees? We have a 4-H project that will help you get started in beekeeping. There is also a county-wide beekeepers meeting that is held the last Monday of each month. Contact the Extension Office for date, time and place. 2 Riesbeck s Gives Back to 4-H Endowment Bob Burkhart, Assistant Store Director of the Woodsfield Riesbeck s Food Market, recently announced the Sausage & Ribeye Benefit held on May 19 th raised $2, for the Monroe County 4-H Endowment. The 4-H Endowment Committee helped Riesbeck s employees serve sausage and ribeye sandwiches at the event and appreciates the community s support. Riesbeck s employees and 4-H volunteers were hard at work early Friday to get your sandwiches ready for you. Thank you everyone for your support. New Cloverbud Kit Available..Weather When you re with a group of people and you can t think of anything to say, why not bring up how great (or how nasty) the weather has been? 4-H Cloverbuds can now talk about the weather, too! And they will probably have more knowledge than most of the people around them if they ve been to the session where you have taught the new Weather Fun Cloverbud kit! The new kit was made available as a fundraiser for the Jefferson County 4-H Committee. The kit is made up of songs, games, crafts, snacks, stories, and science experiments. The kit will help you as volunteers discuss things that may be hard to discuss, such as fear of storms and what we can do to be smart, not scared, during big storms. The science experiments included with the kit are hands-on and Cloverbud-age appropriate. Even your fiveyear-old Cloverbuds will be able to make a rainbow on a sunny day and go home and share that rainbow with their families. Four of the experiments are set up to be repeated at home- using materials found in every home. The fifth experiment (the cyclone tube) requires a special tube that most families won t have, but it is included in the kit because it is so awesome to see. The kit can be borrowed from your county Extension office. Judging Highlights for 2017 July is just around the corner and it will be time for project judging. Here are some highlights to keep in mind as you begin to prepare for July. 1) Project books must be checked and signed by your 4-H advisor before coming to judging- Bringing an unsigned project book to judging will result in the member receiving a score of Incomplete. 2) Dress Code- Remember that the goal of participating in project interviews is to help 4-H members prepare for future interview situations. With that in mind, members should dress as if they were attending a job or college interview. General appearance should be neat and clean. No t-shirts with inappropriate language or graphics. Jeans or long pants are preferred. Skirts/shorts should reach at least the midthigh. No low-cut tops or visible undergarments. Hats should not be worn during the interview. Examples of appropriate dress: button-down shirts, polos, dressy tops, 4-H club t-shirts, nice jeans, capris, skirts. 3) Incomplete Projects- Receiving a judging score of 64 points or less will cause the project to be scored as Incomplete. Common reasons for an incomplete score might be: unfinished /missing project book, unsigned project book, not bringing required items to judging, or not being prepared to answer questions during the interview. Members who receive a score of Incomplete will be required to correct their issues and come to Make-up Judging (or another judging appointment) in order to receive a passing score. Members who do not come to the second judging or receive a passing score will not be eligible to exhibit at the fair or receive a fair pass County Fair Dates August Project Judging Days 4-H Special Interest Project Judging Day July 11 4-H Dog Judging & Skillathons - July 11 Shooting Sports Club Judging Day - July 10 Animal Project Interviews & Skillathons July 25 4-H Express 2 June 2017

5 Animal Skillathon Study Sheets Animal skillathon requirements for the July 25th judging are listed in your green 4-H Handbook. If the requirements call for study sheets to help you prepare, they are now posted online at: Woodworking Skillathon Study Sheets The study sheets for the woodworking skillathon are available in your green 4-H Handbook. These require you to make a small wood item, so you might want to practice before judging. You will be making this item at judging too! Can You Help at Project Judging During July? If you would like to volunteer and help a few hours at Special Interest Project Judging on Tuesday, July 11 or Animal Project Skillathons on Tuesday, July 25 please complete the enclosed response form. You can also Cheryl at goodrich.49@osu.edu. Food Training Class for 4-H Lunchstand Workers A new OSU Extension Food Service/Preparation Policy requires individuals providing leadership to the onsite preparation and service of food (food for sale or to be given away) are required to complete training prior to engaging in food preparation. To satisfy the policy each club will need one trained adult on-hand in the lunchstand during your club s shift. Therefore each club will need to select one or more adults, which can be a parent or advisor, to attend the Food Service/Preparation Training. Clubs are encouraged to have more than one person trained in case your club provides food service at other events or fundraisers. Training is good for 5 years. This years session will be on Thursday, August 10 th from 6:00-7:30 pm at the OSU Extension Office. Adopt-A-Cabin Refurbishment Campaign The 4 H Camp Piedmont Board has a goal of refurbishing all 14 cabins at the camp. The cabins have had new lighting and windows recently installed, but are still in need of many upgrades. Camp Piedmont is asking each of the 8 counties who use the camp to participate. The cost to refurbish a single cabin is $5,000. Refurbishment will include: New roof, walls, floors, ceilings, and doors. Contractors will be doing work under the leadership of the Maintenance Manager, John Gardner. The Monroe County 4-H Committee would like to raise and donate $5,000 for a cabin. The committee is encouraging ALL 4 H clubs to donate $300.
