I wanted to touch base with everyone to send along a few friendly reminders for the upcoming extremely BUSY week! 1.) Please review the calendar. The rehearsal schedule for next week is as follows: Monday 4-6 pm, Tuesday 4-6 pm and Thursday 4-6 pm before our first contest next Saturday at Eastern HS in Louisville. An itinerary will be ed soon. 2.) Last night, (9/11) we had our 1st public performance at our 1st home football game! Thanks to all who helped in any and every way. We saw some good things and some things we need to be worked on to make our first competition the best it can be. 3.) Today at our last camp day (9 a.m. until 5 p.m.), we will set all of the drill for the last movement of the show! The goal is to be done with the show by the end of the day! We will also add some new visual material and rehearse music. I cannot stress the importance of our day. Again, students missing this day will be unprepared and unable to march the first contest on Saturday, Sept. 19th. I want to thank all students and families for your work so far! This is a very important week in our marching season, so let's make the best of it! Sincerely, Bill Kite Director of Bands Henry Clay High School Band Office: (859)
2 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 2 of 10 President s Pen HC Band Booster Co-Presidents Dear Henry Clay Band Boosters, The new school year is under way, and the enthusiasm in our band program continues to build! The Concert, Wind and Jazz Ensembles are hard at work under the direction of Mr. Kite and Mr. Bayerle, and the Percussion classes are going strong! We are looking forward to the first Marching Band performance at Eastern High School in Louisville on September 19 th. The marching band will be playing at the home football games, so everyone can come to hear our students! We also will have a special middle school event at the home football game on October 2 nd as our part of our directors ongoing efforts to recruit new students for the future. We have had good responses to the need for Bingo workers- keep up the good work! We also had a great turnout of students and an amazing group of hardworking parents for our first experience with a new fund raising event on Saturday August 29 th. Over 100 members of the Band family installed over 7,000 seats in the UK stadium in preparation for the football season. We earned $3500 for the day, and we will earn that amount again when we take the seats down at the end of the football season- stay tuned for the date and time. Many thanks to Kathy and Russell Edwards for chairing this fundraiser! Our cookie dough/cheese and sausage/candle sale is winding down as this newsletter goes to press- we appreciate Lisa McNary for taking charge of this event again this year. Our next Board/Booster meeting is on September 21 st at 7:00. We had a wonderful turnout at the August meeting- come join us for updates and new information. We need to have all parents Volunteer forms turned in by that date. If you haven t turned yours in, you can find the form in your handbook or download it from our website: We want to be able to get the names to the chairpersons of our committees so we can use the talents of our parents to help all students in our Band program. See you on the 21 st! Kathy and Scott Riley Co-Presidents
3 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 3 of 10 FUNDRAISING BINGO WE NEED YOU!! The marching band students, and the parents who attend their competitions, won t be available to work bingo during the competition weekends of September 19, October 3, 24 and 31, and November 7. If you re not attending competitions, please seriously consider fulfilling part/all of your fundraising commitment by working bingo during one or more of the competition weekends. Also, we need at least 4 adults (2 teams of 2 people each) to sign up as the pull tab counter workers for either the first or the fourth weekend of each month. You may start working now, or after marching competitions end. Satisfy your fundraising commitment while having fun getting to know other parents and your student s band mates! Last but not least if you ve always wanted to know more about bingo but were afraid to ask come join us at Jackpot Bingo (on the lower level of Eastland Shopping Center) from 2:30 to 5:00 on Sunday, September 13. We ll be hosting a free open house to let people try playing bingo, in the hope that they ll return as paying customers. Come try it! For more information, please contact either Diane Bradley at scrabrose@windstream.net, , or Jean O Daniel at jean.odaniel@insightbb.com, Thanks! KROGER CARDS Kroger Cards offer a wonderful opportunity for the band! Kroger donates $4 to the band for every $100 loaded on a HC Band card; the card can then be used just like a prepaid credit card for all Kroger purchases including prescriptions and gas. The cards come loaded with $20 on them. When time to reload, it can be done right at the check out lane before you begin your purchases. Just give the card to the cashier, tell him/her the amount of $ you would like added to the card and pay that amount via cash, check, and credit or debit card. Your Kroger Gift Card can also be used to purchase a number of gift cards for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. available right at your Kroger store instead of having to travel to each store, restaurant, etc. to purchase gift cards! Please contact Darlene Mullin at trinity4us@windstream.net or for Kroger cards.

5 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 5 of 10 FUNDRAISING (cont) COMMONWEALTH STADIUM SEATBACK INSTALLATION On a cloudy, then very sunny Saturday, August 31, 110 HC band members and family/friends gathered at Commonwealth Stadium for the first annual fundraiser. Kathy & Russell Edwards led the fundraiser with fabulous results! Over 7,000 seatbacks were installed in approx. 7 hours, with a $3,500 fundraising profit! After the UK football season, the volunteers will gather again to break them all down for storage; however, takedown will be a much quicker task! The UK organizers were very impressed with HC Band work effort and ability! COOKIE DOUGH, CHEESE, SAUSAGE & CANDLE SALES Although this fundraiser has just ended, if your student was unable to sell the minimum suggested ten items, you may still give a donation to the band in lieu of selling. Also, please make sure to return your monies collected in a timely manner once deliveries are made. Thank you to all who participated for the Henry Clay Band!

The 2009 HC Marching Blue Devils Band kicked off the season last night with their first performance in uniform at the HC football game against Scott County. It was an exciting time to watch the unveiling of the new show! Next Saturday, Sept. 19 is the first competition of the 09 season! Highlight show information includes * 2009 show title is With One Voice ; separated into five nameless movements. It features several soloists. * Drum Majors are Becca Saylor & Will Edwards. * 72 current members; 5A Class. * Performance schedule: Sept. 19 at Eastern HS Eagle Classic (Louisville), Oct. 3 at Larue County HS, Oct. 24 at Bryan Station HS, Oct. 31 at Tates Creek HS for the 5A Quarter Finals Nov. 7 at Papa John s Stadium for the 5A Finals *The Hospitality Committee depends on every single student and parent/supporter to help feed the students during marching season. Food signups will be sent via every week and all are asked to donate generously and often. The students really appreciate this act of kindness! Right away, it would be GREAT HELP if everyone would bring either a 12-pack of soft drinks or a 24-pack of water to the camp day today (9/12). These drinks will be used during our marching season for our contest days. PLEASE send the drinks when you drop off or pick up your child! Diane Bradley will be there to collect them and store them in the Hospitality Room until needed. Please contact Diane for questions at: scrabrose@windstream.net or *The Pit Crew is another vital volunteer portion of the marching season. The Pit Crew gets the instruments, props and whatever is needed to the competition, on and off the field and back home safe and sound. For questions, contact Sonny Saylor at sonny.mp@insightbb.com. Ways & Means Chairperson We are still in need of someone to chair this vital position, which is not responsible for running fundraisers, but helps coordinate the overall committee and researches fundraising ideas. Uniform Committee Jennifer Peavler s son, Logan, will graduate this year and her position will need to be filled. If interested, please consider shadowing committee members at the competitions to learn the role. Unofficial Marching Uniform Students need to have the royal blue HC Band shirt & marching show shirt (which will be distributed soon), solid black shorts, black crew socks and clean marching shoes ready for each competition. Mr. Kite will inform students which shirt will be worn prior to each performance. HC Band Sponsor Program If you have corporate contacts or know individuals who might be interested in supporting our band program with a monetary donation, please contact Geni Osborn at: gosborn7@aol.com. Reach out to people you know directly, or if you prefer, forward the information to Geni and ask her to contact the individual. Please let Geni know if you are contacting an organization directly to avoid duplication. See a sample brochure on the following page (page 10). Got Media?...If you take pictures of the band during the year and want to share those photos with the rest of the band family, it's easy! The Media page on the band website: includes links to the image collections we already know about. If yours is not listed, contact kraemer@ .uky.edu to have your site added. The band also has a Flickr group: where Flickr users can submit images directly. If you have a Flickr account, let us know so we can send you an invitation to the group! Random images from the Flickr group are also displayed on the band home page: We've also started a blip video channel: Contact kraemer@ .uky.edu for information on how to get your band videos added!
