We finished the 1st semester with some strong final exams after a great winter concert and now we are quickly back to work! I hope everyone enjoyed some well-deserved time off with family and friends over the holidays! Now that school is in session again, the schedule becomes very busy quickly! Important information follows 1. For current, up-to-date information on the HC Band program, please go to our new website: Also, follow us for frequent band updates by logging on to the HC Band on Twitter! link on the website. 2. You will find the calendar of all events for the year on the left hand side of the website under Links: **Band Calendar**. Please be carefully reviewing the Charms calendar for all official HC Band events this spring! 3. I hope everyone stays safe as the winter weather season is here! I wanted to pass along a couple of details and procedures as the weather impacts the school day. Anytime school is delayed, zero hour jazz classes will NOT meet; and anytime "all after school activities are cancelled," we obviously carefully observe this policy, and after school band rehearsals, auditions, concerts, etc. are cancelled or postponed. 4. We held HC Jazz program auditions for the 2nd semester this week. Mr. Bayerle and I set the jazz ensemble and lab band placements based upon preparation of the audition piece and a short sight reading sample. Due to the size of the program and the need to assemble two jazz bands of proper/standard instrumentation, we will need to make cuts to the HC jazz program this week. All students are eligible to audition again next fall regardless of the outcome of the audition this week. Please check the calendar on the HC Band website for the list of jazz events this spring. There are many opportunities and both jazz ensembles will perform more often than they did this past semester during the fall. Note: The HC Jazz Ensemble has been invited to perform at the University of Kentucky Big Band Blast on Friday, May 14th at the Singletary Center for the Arts. This is a tentative date with times and details yet to be determined, but is a NEW and exciting opportunity for us this spring. More details to come. 5. KMEA Solo & Ensembles event is Saturday, February 20 at Lexington Catholic HS. If interested, students MUST notify the directors by tomorrow, Thursday, 1/14. Bill Kite Director of Bands Henry Clay High School
2 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 2 of 8 President s Pen HC Band Booster Co-Presidents Welcome back to a new year of Henry Clay Band events! We enjoyed a great Winter Concert just before the break, thanks to our hardworking and talented students and directors! If you have been keeping up with the s and website postings, you know we have a great group of kids who have been selected for the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) All-State bands and Orchestra, as well as the All-District bands. We are glad to have a new website up and running, and are looking forward to concerts this semester that will include the Percussion/Jazz Extravaganza, a spring concert, and the annual Pops Concert. Our need for participation in booster activities and fundraising continues, as you can see in some of the other articles in this newsletter. Members of the Board will be working with the directors to develop the budget for , which may involve significant changes from the past few years due to the decreases in income from Bingo revenue and reduced band family participation in fundraising efforts. We need each family to make the success of the Henry Clay Band Program a personal priority this year so we con continue with the tradition of excellence HCHS has enjoyed for many years. Thanks, as always, to those who work so hard to support the band. Here s to a great 2010! Scott and Kathy Riley Co-Presidents
3 Henry Clay Band Notes Page Page 3 of 310 of 8 FUNDRAISING Fruit & Poinsettia Although it was a less successful sale this year than last, we had 33 students selling (10 less than last year) 435 items with net revenue of $7,363 and a projected profit of $3,800 ($1,400 less than last year). We would like to thank everyone who sold this year! There are still two students who need to turn in their money, so please do so as soon as possible. Leigh and Joe Grossman, Fruit & Flower Chair lag830@insightbb.com Value Cards & Kroger Cards: Please Keep Using! Value Cards sales are up this year, thanks to your efforts and the interest generated by several new participating merchants. Currently we have made $4,345 in revenue, with a $1,345 net profit, which is almost $450 over what we were budgeted to earn. Good work! Thank you for all who supported this fundraiser. Remaining cards are still available $5 each/3 for $10. Please turn in any unsold cards ASAP remember, you are responsible for reimbursing the band for any cards that are not turned in or are lost. Lesley Iwinski, Value Card Chair hiwinski@insightbb.com Kroger Cards offer a wonderful opportunity for the band! Kroger donates $4 to the band for every $100 loaded on a HC Band card; the card can then be used just like a prepaid credit card for all Kroger purchases including prescriptions, gas and gift cards for birthdays, anniversaries, etc., available right at your Kroger store instead of having to travel to each store, restaurant, etc. to purchase gift cards. The Kroger Gift Cards come loaded with $10 on them. When time to reload, it can be done right at the checkout lane before you begin your purchases. Just give the card to the cashier, tell him/her the amount of $ you would like added to the card and pay that amount via cash, check, and credit or debit card. We need to update records, so please us with your card # as soon as possible to assure the band is getting credit for your card! Please contact Geni Osborn at gosborn7@aol.com with your card # asap, or for questions or a card.
4 Henry Clay Band Notes Page 4 of 8 FUNDRAISING (cont) Commonwealth Stadium Seatbacks The seatback fundraiser was a wonderful first-time success. Thanks to all the students, families and to the directors for your hours of hard work and fun! Our projected profit is $7,500 for the two-day fundraiser. Plan ahead for the fall to do it all again! Bingo THANK YOU to all the folks who have helped recently with bingo, whether with counting or selling pulltabs, working behind the counters, calling bingo games or otherwise keeping things running as smoothly as possible. We ve had a number of new volunteers (both parents and students) selling pulltabs, as well as several adults who have assumed regular, ongoing roles. Welcome to Russell and Kathy Edwards, and welcome back to Ruth and Brian Lundborg, all of whom have agreed to assist behind the pulltab counter. The last few weeks have seen a significant increase in bingo attendance and income, and we hope bingo is making substantial progress toward resuming its very important fundraising role for the HC Band Boosters. Meanwhile, however, the future of HCBB bingo is in jeopardy. In order to continue running our weekly sessions, at least four adults MUST be trained immediately to call the bingo games. We currently have two bingo callers in training, Jeff Osborn and alumni parent Arnold Bubba Riddle. While callers from other bingo programs have VERY graciously helped us several times in the last month, they certainly cannot be expected to continue donating their personal time to us. WE IMMEDIATELY NEED AT LEAST TWO MORE ADULT VOLUNTEERS who each are willing to call one three-hour bingo session per month. We understand the reluctance of many parents to make additional time commitments, as nearly all of our schedules already are too busy. However, please bear in mind that a small group of other busy parents currently are committing twenty, thirty, forty, or even more hours each and every month toward the bingo and other fundraising activities that equally benefit ALL of our band students -- whether concert, jazz, symphonic, percussion, steel drums, guard or marching. These parents, who are rapidly speeding toward the point of burning out, need your help as quickly as possible! Please examine your schedules and, if you don t already have a major, ongoing fundraising role, step up to do your share!!! Contact Lee Kemp at or kempinsurance@windstream.net; Jean O Daniel at or jean.odaniel@insightbb.com; or Diane Bradley at or scrabrose@windstream.net for more information.

With a $4.00 profit per 1-lb of coffee, we will sell 2,500 lbs of coffee to meet our $10,000 goal. We're excited to be the first high school band in this area to offer this product! Look for flyers to go home next Tuesday. Questions, suggestions, offers of help - please call Dana Silver at , or danasilver@insightbb.com.
