Principal s Page May 2011 End of Course Assessments Our state assessment has changed this year for math. Students that are currently taking Algebra I, Geometry, Applied I, or Applied II need to take a End of Course (EOC) math assessment. These tests will be given over three days, June 7-9, This style of math assessment has replaced the HSPE students took last year in math. This year there is NO make-up for students during the summer. The next available math EOC is in January of If a student in the class of 2012 has not passed the WASL or HSPE, there are several options available. They are: Pass one end-of-course assessment in Algebra 1/ Integrated Mathematics 1 or Geometry/Integrated Mathematics 2; or Pass one end-of-course makeup assessment in Algebra 1/Integrated Mathematics 1 or Geometry/Integrated Mathematics 2; or Complete and pass a CAA alternative option; or Earn two high school mathematics credits after 10th grade. In order to meet mathematics graduation requirements, students in the classes of 2013 and 2014 must do the following: Earn three credits from high school level math courses or earn credits in the relevant career and technical education (CTE) equivalent courses; and Pass one end-of-course exam in Algebra 1/Integrated Mathematics 1 OR Geometry/Integrated Mathematics 2; OR Complete and pass a CAA alternative option. 3 State and Local Budgets In last month s newsletter I mentioned the State budget cuts and as I write this article the House and Senate have finally decided on a budget. The details of this budget are still being analyzed and the impact on Curlew School District is yet to be determined. One of the ideas that the State was considering to save money was to shorten the school year by up to five days. This action was not taken, but they did cut the salary allocation for all education employees. If you want more information on the specifics of the current State budget I recommend you visit the League of Education Voters website at School Board Meeting Dates The School Board will meet on the first Wednesday of every month for the foreseeable future. The next few meetings will be on June 1, July 6 and August 3. All meetings start at 4:00 and are held in the school library. Steve McCullough Curlew School Superintendent RUBY WALKER JOINS THE SCHOOL BOARD On May 4 th the Curlew School Board selected Ruby Walker to replace resigning board member Jan Stephens. Ruby resides with her family on a tree farm east of Curlew, and she brings a wealth of experience to her role as a school board member. She is a retired Commander in the US Coast Guard Reserve (33 years of service), and she taught 7 th -12 th grade math and science and coached basketball and softball in California and Nevada for five years. Ruby is already active in our school through sponsoring on-site field trips for science and forestry; chaperone for the 6 th grade Science Camp; and in supporting both academic and non-academic programs such as the Science Fair, Math is Cool and sports. Thank you Ruby for your willingness to represent our community as a member of the Curlew School Board. Big news for the month of May was the class field trip to the county fairgrounds to plant flowers around the carousel. It was a great way to give back to our community and complete our spring science unit. Earlier this year, we learned about pebbles, sand and silt in a science unit about earth materials, so we completed our day in Republic at Stonerose. We all had fun looking for fossils before a very tired group returned to school. We are all grateful to have had this opportunity and would like to thank administration and staff for helping to make it possible. Special thanks go to Billy Jo Walker, Kate Johnson, Amy Kjolseth, Kim McElheran and Julie Thornton for joining us to help plant and for helping to make this such a great experience. On May 18 Dr. Abel and his staff from the Republic Dental Clinic met with students for a free check on their dental health. Thank you to Dr. Abel and his staff for volunteering to help our kids! A letter was sent home with your child following the visit. The letter identified any possible problems with your child s dental health and explained the procedures used during the visit. If you have any questions please call the school office at

By Mrs. Benson Animal Habitat Research Reports The third graders in our class have been very busy the last few weeks. We have researched an animal in multiple sources, and each student has written a full report with a bibliography and all! Here are a few interesting facts that they found out about their animal: Claire-Did you know a rabbit can see behind itself without turning its head? Jacob- I learned that a Tyrannosaurus Rex s teeth are 6 inches long. Colton- The King Cobra is the largest of all poisonous snakes. Kristina- 99.9% of all wolves that live in United States are Gray Wolves. Korin- Flamingos have very few predators. Paige- The Cheetah was trained by man for hunting. Ian- No two tigers look the same. Isabella- Horses eat sagebrush. Samara- A Flamingo is sixteen different colors of pink. All of the students put tremendous effort into this report. Jeffrey Spooner put so much time and heart into it that I asked if I could share it with you! Scary Scorpions By Jeffrey Spooner Did you know that a scorpion can be frozen in solid ice for a certain period of time? If I were crawling in the desert and I came face to face with a scorpion I would get a jar out of my bag and capture it, because I think scorpions are so cool and interesting. I want one as a pet. A scorpion has many homes and shelters, like the desert, grasslands, savannahs, some forests, mountain pine forests, intertidal zones, and caves. Some are even found underneath snow covered rocks at elevations of over 12,000 feet in the Himalayas of Asia! To this day there are 700-1,500 species of scorpions know to man kind. One is a Whip Scorpion. Instead of a stinger, it has a whip like tail that can spray acid at attackers! A scorpion is a fascinating arthropod and arachnid. Most scorpions spend the day under rocks or in the shade. They hunt and eat at night. Scorpions don t have good vision, so they feel or smell their food! There is several food and prey for scorpions. Scorpions eat crabs, mice, birds, tiny lizards, snakes, flies, beetles, large or small spiders, centipedes, millipedes, and many other creatures. Hedgehogs and other animals eat scorpions too! Last, some scorpions can be frozen in solid ice for only a certain period of time. A scorpion has many homes and shelters like grasslands, deserts, savannahs, and many other places. Most scorpions spend the day under rocks or in the shade and then they hunt at night. Scorpions eat crabs, mice, birds, and many other animals, but Hedgehogs and other animals may eat scorpions. The most exciting and anticipated event this spring was our field trip to a farm. On May 26 we got on the bus and rode to Shawn and Sheila Anderson s farm on Heron Creek near Republic. We watched the cow, a milking shorthorn, being milked with a machine. The milk was mixed with grain and fed to the weaner pigs. We got to see big pigs too. Some of them will be having babies soon. We saw turkeys setting on eggs and got to hold baby chicks and gather eggs from the hen house. We got to pet their lawn mower, a miniature horse. It was a fun day in spite of the rain and cold temperatures. I appreciate the chaperones that braved the weather to go with us, and John Meyer for driving the bus. On June 7 th we will have the Kindergarten celebration starting in the MPR at 10:00. This year s class of 11 students will present a program and be honored for their success this school year. Lunch will follow in the cafeteria then cake and punch in the classroom. 4 by Mrs. Fletcher

I can t believe there are only a few weeks of school left! We have been sooo busy this month. We had a wonderful Mom and Me Party! Thanks for making our event so great! Four of our caterpillars turned into butterflies. It was really fun to get to watch day by day the life cycle of the butterfly and then set them free. Most of our learning and activities have had a caterpillar/butterfly/insect theme, ask your kiddos about the fun things we have learned this month. May also brings a time of transition for our five year olds into Kindergarten. Some of our transition activities have included self-help skills, social/ emotional development skills, literacy, mathematics, science, a visit to the Kindergarten classroom with Mrs. Fletcher, and a graduation to come. I will be sending home some great information on transitioning to Kindergarten as well as some fun summer activities that cost little or no money. Please contact me if you have any questions at all. We will have a preschool visit day on June 13 th from 9am-10:30am for all of those families with kiddos that will be 3 or 4 years old by August 31 st. Please contact me to RSVP at Talk to you more in June, Barbara A Davis 4 th Graders Compete at Math is Cool Regional Contest! April 15, 2011 started out like nearly every Math is Cool Competition Morning---with Snow! Eight very excited and nervous students started their Friday morning, as usual until just after lunch! They collected their backpacks, filled with snacks, pencils, and other math supplies and headed for Spokane in Mrs. Kjolseth and Mrs. Poore s cars. Their destination; Mt. Spokane High School to participate in this year s 4 th Grade Math is Cool Regional Competition! After quizzing each other on Mental Math and College Bowl questions, the group arrived ready to compete! The team was quickly checked in, purchased T-shirts, and joined the others in the gym for the Orientation. Then off to their assigned classrooms to begin their first activities. At the break, the students enjoyed some pizza, shared their snacks, and reviewed the rules for the final and most fun two events; Mental Math and 3 rounds of College Bowl! This is the part of the competition when parents and coaches are allowed to join the students in their testing rooms, and watch them compete. With the completion of these events, all the participants, coaches, and family visitors gather in the gym for the awards ceremony! With 34 Division I and 12 Division II schools present, consisting of approximately 590 students, the gym was packed and the energy was electrifying! The Awards ceremony began by announcing the Top Scoring 4 th grader from each school. Curlew School s Top Scoring 4 th grader was Amara Wentz with a Score of 30! This is a sharp group of students with Tyler Haddenham scoring 28, Gunnar Hilderbrandt scoring 25, and Jake Pyeatt scoring 24! Curlew School was represented well with the strength of Math whizzes, Jessica Johnson, Nicole Ringstad, Joree Scriver, and Emmett Kjolseth to help round out the teams! These students faced some fierce opposition as their Curlew School Team Score of 79 placed them 11 th out of 12 Division II schools, and yet this was the Highest Team Score from any Curlew Team, from any grade that I have worked with! They have shown themselves among the Cougar Pride, and we should all be very proud of this young group. After the Awards, the gym was packed and the Coaches Packets were arriving, as the crowd dispersed. As I returned to congratulate these students on their fantastic achievements, I looked across the now nearly empty gym and spotted Gregg Sampson, the founder of Math is Cool and pointed him out to our Mathletes and this group of students took it one step further up the Cougar Pride Ladder! Their response? Can we Thank him for Creating Math is Cool? So we walked across the gym and these students met one of my greatest Mentors and now theirs! They excitedly Thanked Gregg for creating Math is Cool, as he talked to them about the competition. My one regret-we did not take a picture, yet I m sure they will be able to visualize it for years. As we walked back across the gym and grabbed our belongings, I wondered just how many students have ever Thanked Gregg for starting this program. I can think of eight by name! The students and Mrs. Poore would like to Thank Mrs. Kjolseth for driving one of the teams to Mt. Spokane High School and the other parents who showed up to visit and watch! -- Have a Great Summer! 5 Caroline Poore, Math is Cool Advisor

A huge Thank You to all of our community members near and far that helped make this year s career fair a big success!! THANK YOU TO ALL PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE VOLUNTEERS As the school year draws to a close, I would like to sincerely thank all the individuals who have volunteered their time and expertise to the students and staff here at Curlew School. From the classrooms, office, kitchen, fieldtrips, Book Fairs, Science Fairs, Career Day and ball fields you all have contributed to the success of our school and we value your commitment and dedication. Volunteering here at school, attending games or programs, or occasionally visiting your child s classroom gives your child a powerful message that you are interested in what goes on in their school and that you value their educational and extra curricular pursuits. Study after study continues to show that children with strong support from home are the most successful students. If you were a volunteer in some capacity this year we hope to see you again next year and we encourage all of you who may have some extra time in the school day next fall to come in sometime to visit your child s classroom. Who knows? You might become hooked and become a regular volunteer! Have a great summer! Next, these finalists had to produce a third film based on the theme, Journey. The Grand Prize winner will be announced on June 1 st. You can view Misha s and the other finalist s films by Googling Sony Behind the Lens Film Contest. Misha just completed her sophomore year as an Honors student and Film Production major at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. 11 GOOD NEWS FOR READERS!!! Students at Curlew have worked hard and learned so much during the past school year. The good news is that you can help your child (or children) maintain that learning over the summer. The best way to do this is to read, read, read! Studies show that when a child reads as few as six appropriately grade-leveled books, he or she is likely to fend off summer reading loss and maintain the reading gains made during the previous school year. (Not to mention the gain in adventure, new discoveries, and fun that a stack of six kid-picked summer books can provide.) And when a child reads even more books (eight or ten or twenty) he or she may even gain ground and return to school in September a more confident reader. This good news is the reason Mrs. Warner and Mrs. Thornton will be available to read with students this summer. They will be at school from 9:30-11:00 a.m. beginning Wednesday, June 29 and continuing at the same time on every Wednesday through the month of July. The North Central Regional Library will make their BOOKMOBILE available on three of those days to allow students to check out books to read at home. So, reserve Wednesdays from 9:30-11:00 to come join us for some great reading! ACCIDENT COSTS The safety of our students is one of our most important concerns. Even so, accidents do happen and resulting treatment can be expensive. Please know the District does not assume responsibility for these costs. We do however have information on low cost student insurance. For information, please feel free to call the school office ANNUALS $30 Pay in the office. They will arrive in September END OF SCHOOL COMING 11 The school year comes to a close on Tuesday, June 14. School will be dismissed at 11am and no lunch will be served. Monday, June 13 has normal school hours but 7th period will be used for presentation of class awards and certificates. BBQ for students and parents is Friday, June 10. Cost is: $2 for Pre-6, $2.25 for grades 7-12, and $3.25 for adults. No charges are allowed.

COUGAR TIMES Curlew School District P.O. Box 370 Curlew, WA Non-Profit Bulk Rate U.S. Postage PAID Curlew, WA Permit No. 8 LOOKING FORWARD.. Looking forward is a great opening line for many things. But in our case looking forward means we are looking forward to a new school year, new and returning students, new menus, and changes in our current menus. Some of those changes will include more whole and multi grains, larger servings of fruit and vegetables, and decreased sodium. We have already changed our salt to sea salt and cut the amount in all of our recipes. USDA recently signed the reauthorization that partially funds our lunch and breakfast program. With reauthorization the above were just a few of the items that will be changing. USDA s requirements are based on Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and as time goes on, further adjustments will be made. Looking forward, we have been looking into whole wheat flours and have found a couple we are anxious to try. Don t be fooled by the look however, just because it may look the same (or at least very close) doesn t mean it is the same. We are proud of our from scratch cooking that we do, and we intend to continue with that trend while incorporating these new ingredients. We are always on the lookout for new recipes that are interesting, tasty, appealing and cost effective. As busy parents we know all too well how quickly a leisurely morning can deteriorate into a mad scramble to get to the bus on time. If there isn t time for breakfast at home, rest assured that we offer breakfast daily at school. Your student can get a great start to their day with breakfast. To make your life easier, you can access your students lunch account balance through our school web site. If you don t already have password access, please contact Bonnie Grumbach to get yours set up today. You will be able to check their account balances as well as their grades, and attendance. We are looking forward to school starting in the fall, but first we re looking forward to summer. Have a safe, healthy and happy summer. Curlew School Kitchen Judith Mannick Chris Miller
