2 ASB Update Jennie Drennan and Wanda Fletcher did an amazing job organizing this year s Christmas Program. The stage was set up like a bedroom, the gym beneath it was full of kids ages pre-school through 6th cuddled around Mrs. Fletcher while she sat in her rocking chair and read them The Night Before Christmas. Mr. Benson played the role of Pa acting out the story with Jennie as Santa. The students stood up and sang songs between pages. To finish the night off Korin Baker, Emmett Kjolseth, Colton Fl0m, Amara Wentz, and Hannah McIrvin played Silent Night on their guitars while Katherine York accompanied them on her flute. Of course, the night ended with a visit from the big man himself...santa! Haleigh Gibson, Treasurer A Word from your ASB President Communication is another large aspect of leadership. As highlighted in the last issue, I said how creating a nonbiased environment can really help to get creativity going. Every aspect of communication is needed in order to create a functioning project, group, or class room. Share your ideas, write them down, draw them out, or anything needed in order to get your ideas out there to the world. Without communication between parties and each other, many great ideas can slip through the cracks and you may miss out on something fantastic. Nathan Rhodehouse, President Welcome back! Hope everyone had a good break! 1/3 Basketball game at Inchelium Cougar Spirit Project The Cougar Spirit Project is off to a fantastic start. Thank you to everyone for participating and being so wonderful. A big congratulations to everyone who went out and volunteered this past month, you all do such a great job. Our first home game was December 13, and I hope that everyone will have came and cheered hard for our fantastic boys and girls basketball teams. Also don't forget to keep racking up those points for your class because this competition is about to get a lot more intense. A second home game against Republic, and the new year bringing in all sorts of opportunities to start fresh and go out into the world ready to help out! In case no one caught that I'm referring to volunteering! I have a feeling all the wonderful things so many students did to volunteer this past December is just the beginning of a marvelous life long relationship with the wonders of community service. If you have some ideas, or need some help with a volunteer project, don't hesitate to call Heather Thompson at the school or visit her in the library. She is sure to help you out and everyone can be a winner. Finally, I want to thank all the terrific parents for coming to the games and supporting our school, we couldn't do it without you! I hope everyone's winter break was a good one and I wish you all a happy new year! PRESCHOOL HAPPENINGS I would like to thank everyone for coming to our Jamboree and the Christmas Concert. We had such a great time and I love getting to see all of our families together. We have had a busy month learning songs with Mrs. Fletcher for the Christmas concert, mixing flour and spices, practicing our Gingerbread Baby play, getting ready for and having our Gingerbread Jamboree with Parents, playing cookie, cookie, Gingerbread Baby and Run Run as fast as you can, you can t catch me I m the Gingerbread Man in the gym at PE. Of course we have also had a lot of fun sharing our holiday traditions and turning them into a classroom book, stop by and read it some time. I hope you all have a wonderful vacation and don t forget to read! Next Month, in January, we will be having so much fun with our snow/winter focus. If you have any craft/game ideas let me know. We have a great deal of fun and learning in our future and as always, family is a welcome addition to our activities. I am starting a series of activities for you to do with your kiddos. This month will focus on reading with your child every day! By doing this your child will: Learn to understand themselves and others Think of reading as a pleasant activity Become a life-long learner Ways to do this include: Reading at a special time every day, then incorporating more times and different places so that your child can see that reading is important to you Providing a variety of books that match your child s age and interest Always ask questions about the book while reading like, What do you think will happen next? And let them ask you questions too. I wish you all a very happy holiday season and an extremely happy New Year! Barbara Davis

4 Curlew Students Compete at the Masters in Moses Lake! It s all about the numbers and getting it right! That s Math, specifically the Math is Cool Masters Competition, which was held Saturday, December 7, 2013, in Moses Lake. On December 6, 2013, 12 excited Curlew students had the auspicious opportunity to travel to Moses Lake to compete at the Math is Cool Masters, which you must qualify for at the junior high or high school Regional competitions or be invited. The Masters is equivalent to state levels; using pencils and paper for equipment and classrooms for your court or field; and everything is timed! This year Curlew was fortunate to send three full teams of 4, which consisted of a 7 th grade, 9 th /10 th combo, and 11 th /12 th combo. Friday was spent travelling, supper, and swimming. Math questions and event rules were reviewed! Our students did something very special before the Masters began! They each created a question for the Math is Cool Writers Team, also staying at the Ramada, and submitted them for possible use in a future competition for the 4-6 grades! What a great chance for these students to give back to this program! The writers were very appreciative to receive them. How cool is that? The Masters Day had no fire alarm! The teams travelled to Moses Lake High School. This school is huge, so for the students there for the first time; a bit overwhelming! After signing in and finding each testing rooms, assigned according to their math level, everyone headed for the Maroon gym for the orientation! On to the testing! The Individual events had our 12 Mathletes in six different rooms; then narrowed down to three team rooms. With time to relax and eat pizza, the Mathletes readied themselves for the final and most fun eventthe College Bowl!! By now, the Mathletes were joined by some familiar faces. After the College Bowl, the Jr. High Mathletes headed back to the Maroon gym for their Awards Ceremony, while the High School Mathletes headed for the Theater! The Jr. High 7 th Grade Team showed true Cougar Spirit I saw it behind the nerves and excitement.yes it was there! They placed 12 th.which means they were 12 th in the State! If I know these students; their goal will be to make it back to Masters next year! The 7 th Grade Team consisted of Allena Goree, Amara Wentz, Emmett Kjolseth, and Jake Pyeatt! Well Done! The Masters gives out Individual awards to the top eight students in each Math level. Congratulations to Liam Chamberlin, who received the 3 rd Place Individual Trophy for the Geometry Test!! The team plaques are awarded to the top four teams in each grade level and division! Our 9 th /10 th grade team, which consisted of Nathan Agent, Liam Chamberlin, Dylan Drennan, and Sean Gillen brought home the 4 th place team plaque and bright yellow button ribbons. Our 11 th /12 th grade team, which consisted of Cole Chamberlin, Rowan Davis, Kamryn Donihue, and Talia Donihue brought home the 3 rd Place team plaque and awesome white button ribbons! So proud! Congratulations to seniors Talia Donihue and Cole Chamberlin for finishing their Math is Cool career, after competing in their 13th competition since 6 th Grade! We will miss you next year! Thank you to Curlew School, staff, students & community for all your support! Thank you to Mr. Davidson for driving our bus and Mr. Chamberlin for chaperoning: you are both awesome! Thank You to Mrs. Morrison & the office ladies! Thank you to the Kjolseth s, Pyeatt s, and Donihue s, who travelled from Curlew to Moses Lake on Saturday morning in the crazy cold weather! Amazing!
