1 Northgate rocked you! Cast and crew from Years 7-13 took to the stage in April to perform the fantastic show We Will Rock You at DanceEast on the Waterfront. There was a fabulous response from audiences at all three performances. Comments from parents ranged from, 'It was an amazing performance with such happy and enthusiastic pupils taking part!' to, 'We absolutely loved watching it, it was such a professional, funny and energetic performance!' One parent commented that it was a really welcome distraction for their daughter who is in Year 11 and undertaking GCSE exams in the summer term. They wrote that, 'it was absolutely amazing, so professional.' Northgate High School teachers Mr Fisher and Mr Watson played electric guitar, whilst Mr Rutter played drums and our Year 12 student Amy played bass. Amy said that she 'enjoyed every minute and felt it was such a privilege to play the Queen anthems live! They were an incredible band.' Taking part in such a huge project took months of rehearsals and many of the cast and crew have stated how much fun they had. One parent wrote that their daughter 'Absolutely loved the whole process and has got so much out of it.' It is wonderful to hear that all those involved enjoyed the creative journey, as well as the experience of performing in a theatrical venue. Many pupils were able to make new friends from different form groups or even different year groups. It is one of the many positives that arise from being involved in the world of music, dance or drama. Many students assisted with technical and backstage roles and this show would not have been the success that it was without them. Huge thanks go to all those involved. Oscar Scott and Chloe Taylor-Murton were absolutely sensational in their roles as Galileo and Scaramouche, nailing their songs and delivering dialogue with such comic timing. Izzy Clarke played the role of the villain, Killer Queen, and brought Continued on Page 2
2 2 School show Northgate Review July 2018 From Page 1 the house down with her belting vocals. Her role was well matched with Rowan Black s portrayal of Khashoggi. Rowan delivered his character with deadpan expressions in perfect contrast to Izzy s sassy, domineering characterisation. The Super Yuppies danced and sang their numbers with such precision they really communicated the ideology of a cyber, generic, uniform future. Joshua Watson brought energy to his larger than life role of Britney, the leader of the Bohemians. He and his sidekick Anna Pycock, who played Meat, rocked the audiences with songs such as I want it all and Anna s rendition of No one but you was moving and beautiful. The Bohemians were incredibly funny and delivered their scenes with individuality and so much energy. All ensemble members of all ages danced and sang their way through the show with enjoyment and enthusiasm. What talented youngsters we have here at Northgate! I have to mention the brilliant performance by Joshua Hall in his role as Pop. His opening night improvisation during a scene where the performers jumped several pages ahead in the script was so natural, so well delivered and so incredibly funny, he absolutely brought the house down with his reaction, staying totally in character throughout. What a pro. Many staff were involved in the production and/or rehearsal process. Mr Faiers provided support on radio microphones, Miss Patrick choreographed many of the dance numbers, Mrs Eden and Ms Jacobs both directed the dialogue whilst I reprised my role as musical director. I can honestly say it was an absolute pleasure to put on a Northgate School Show again. Here s to many more in the future! Miss Tournay-Godfrey, Teacher of Music

5 Northgate Review July 2018 Alice in Wonderland 5 Dreams, imagination and the subconscious In April, the Art Department celebrated the outstanding work of the Year 8 pupils by throwing an Alice in Wonderland themed tea party in the library. During their art lessons, the pupils learnt about the art movement Surrealism. They looked at surreal artists such as Max Ernst, Salvador Dali, and Rene Magritte and studied their artwork. They explored how dreams, imagination and the subconscious inspired the artists' work. The Surrealism topic led onto an illustration project linked to Alice in Wonderland. Pupils examined the different types of illustrations artists have created throughout time, and how these artists interpreted the story by Lewis Carroll in various ways. The pupils read an extract from Alice in Wonderland, 'Down the Rabbit Hole', and also watched a number of clips by various filmmakers. From this the pupils produced illustrated books, large film posters, playing cards and 3D Alice in Wonderland shoebox worlds. Each pupil interpreted the story and characters in their own style. The work the Year 8 pupils created was excellent, and each year we display their efforts in the library. However, this time the Art Department decided to really celebrate the work and throw a themed tea party to show the exhibition and reward those pupils who worked exceptionally hard. 6 6 Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Northgate Review July 2018 Amazing adventures and challenges committed group of Year 10 A pupils recently completed the expedition section of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. They attended a series of afterschool training sessions designed to develop skills and knowledge that would be vital for their expeditions. These training sessions included first aid (including CPR), research into the Countryside Code, developing the skill of map reading and learning how to write a DofE route card that would be followed while on their expeditions. These skills were put to the test in their practice expedition, which took place in the Sudbury area over the weekend of May. Each walking group, comprised of between 4-7 participants, was allocated a member of staff (who very kindly volunteered to give up their weekend) who would remotely supervise the group throughout the 2-day expedition. Participants were required to carry everything they needed for the duration of the expedition including food, tents and cooking stoves. The overnight stay allowed pupils to demonstrate and refine their camp craft, such as construction of tents and cooking of substantial meals. Following the opportunity to develop their skills, participants were ready to undertake their qualifying expedition in the area of Bungay over the weekend of 9-10 June. Each walking group was assessed by DofE qualified assessors throughout the duration of the expedition, which allowed them to show just how far they had come since the start of their training. The group conducted themselves impeccably throughout the entire process of training, practice and qualifying expeditions. They are a real credit to themselves, their families and the school. Well done! The blisters were worth it in the end. Mr Songhurst and Ms Turner, D of E Joint Co-ordinators
7 Northgate Review July 2018 Japanese Karate European championships 7 Gold medal victory for Northgate's Viktor After many months of build up and training with the Japan Karate Association England squad in Westminster, the time had finally arrived for the junior squad to fly out to Serbia for the Japanese Karate European championships. Held on the weekend of May, the 14 strong squad, ranging in age from 10-18, competed in the Arena Sport Kragujevac. 20 countries took part, with the Russians sending the biggest team of 92 juniors, bringing the total to 450 competitors. At the beginning of the competition, Northgate Year 10 pupil Mia made a fantastic start to get through a few tough rounds. She almost reached the finals with a podium position in sight, but eventually got knocked out (almost literally) by a very fast experienced Russian opponent. Viktor's turn, and he managed to overcome the skills of the Hungarian and Serbian teams to name just two, ultimately managing to get through the rounds and into the final. After much anticipation the finals began and Viktor's skills and agility proved too much for his Russian opponent. Viktor managed to win his final round and was crowned European Champion for his age group and found himself in the coveted gold medal place on the podium. This was an unbelievable achievement for one of the youngest members of the squad. The weekend was finished off with a team meal and party. It had been a phenomenal experience for all those who took part. Mia and Viktor are in a very privileged position to have competed for their country. The lessons that they have learned from working and training hard and being in a supportive team are invaluable. The JKA England National Championship event is around the corner and will take place at the K2 in Crawley at the end of June. The squad will then take a well earned rest for the summer until squad trials take place In October and then, if Mia and Viktor are successful, they will begin the whole process all over again and train towards a place in the 2019 European Championships, to be held in Prague. 8 8 Design competition Northgate Review July 2018 The shortlisted designs, from left to right, Millie Grey, Luke Williams, Maisie Wilcox, Jamie Clements, Abigail Gills and Tamsin Cornish. Planning ahead It is critical in design to make sure that the solution is a reflection of the requirement. As part of the Year 9 Design & Technology syllabus, members of the faculty have been offering pupils the chance to address a current and specific need; to redesign the front cover of the School Pupil Planner. Pupils were given the opportunity of having their design featured on the front of the planner that will go out to all of next year's pupils from Year 7 through to Year 11. The project was run during lessons and dovetailed with the requirements of the National Curriculum. Pupils were required to carry out a profile study of the clients and their designs had to adhere to a carefully prepared set of guidelines created by the school. The top seven entries were picked for the final shortlist. After some careful deliberation Headteacher, Mr Hutton, Deputy Headteacher, Mr Banham and Assistant Headteacher, Mr Emery came up with a winning design. Laura Pycock was the overall winner with the six illustrations pictured above being shortlisted. Laura Pycock said, 'The inspiration for my design was influenced by the way the puzzle pieces slot together, the same way in which the Northgate community and subjects come together to make up our school. I feel that all the Laura Pycock's winning design. aspects of Northgate, including the school values, have been represented in the piece. I put lots of detail into it to represent the dilligence, care and effort put into these subjects from pupils and staff.' Mr Jenner, Teacher of DT
