1 May 2014 Dear Parent/Guardian, I am sure you will share our delight in the excellent news about the award of the 3.6 million from the government to build a new teaching block. (See below.) This news is long overdue, but we are all thrilled that our pupils and staff will finally get the outstanding facilities they deserve. Have a very happy bank holiday weekend and thank you again for your ongoing support. Multi Million Pound New Build Gets Go-ahead Staff and pupils alike are celebrating the news that a 3.6 million, state of the art teaching block is to be built at Healing School. Funded by the Government s Academies Capital Maintenance Fund, work will begin in July, with the new facilities open for the start of the new academic year in The 3 storey building will take shape in the heart of the current school, on the left hand side before the main entrance, parallel to the administration block. The building will include 18 new classrooms, plus a brand new library and learning support centre, equipped with state of the art equipment and the latest technology to ensure top of the range facilities for both pupils and staff. It has taken two years of dedicated hard work from both staff and school governors to secure the funding for the ambitious project. The investment is part of the government s plan to expand successful schools. The growth of the school will also enable more children to gain an Ofsted rated outstanding education, in a first class teaching and learning environment. North East Elevation South West Elevation

2 Page 2 Support Your Child s Learning in Science Event Below: A year 5 pupil gets involved in one of the science activities on show. Healing School Science Faculty hosted their annual Support your child s learning in Science event, attended by year 5 pupils and their parents on Wednesday 21 st May. The event aims to illustrate, using a range of fun practical activities and demonstrations, how modern science lessons are built around investigations. The intention is to capture the pupils imagination. Activities included: fossil hunting, a friction investigation using jelly and the ever popular light fantastic. The event is really successful because of the real stars of the show, the Healing School year 10 pupils, who volunteered to lead the practical activities and did a brilliant job of teaching the younger pupils some of the skills that they will use in the future. Many of the evaluation forms commented upon how knowledgeable and enthusiastic the pupils were and that the year 5 s couldn t wait to move up to Healing school. Page 3 Year 9 Pupils Visit Hull University As usual, all pupils were fantastic ambassadors for the school. They fully engaged in all activities with admirable behaviour and an exemplary attitude.

46 Year 9 pupils were lucky enough to visit the University of Hull earlier this month, as part of ACE day, an initiative to raise pupils awareness of higher education and to raise their aspirations.

3 Page 3 Year 9 Pupils Visit Hull University As usual, all pupils were fantastic ambassadors for the school. They fully engaged in all activities with admirable behaviour and an exemplary attitude. It was rewarding to receive such positive compliments from the staff and students at the university. The visit certainly achieved the objectives. Pupils returned from the trip considerably more knowledgeable about university life and many pupils were buzzing about having the chance to go into higher education if they work hard at GCSEs and at college. On the journey back, many pupils were heard to say I m definitely going to go to university! Before today I wanted to go to college and then get a job, but now I really want to go to uni! It was a great day with a very positive response from pupils thank you to all those involved. Pupils worked in groups with a Student Ambassador from the university, undertaking a range of activities that gave them a great insight into just what s involved in university life. They found out how higher education works accessibility, the variety of entry routes, opportunities in terms of study and personal development and the fact that you don t have to be rich to go to university. 4 Page 4 Healing Readathon Challenge Healing Pupils Take Part in S-con Manga Event On Thursday 6 th of March, Healing School joined the thousands of other primary and secondary schools around the country to celebrate World Book Day. World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it s a celebration of reading! At Healing, we feel that reading is one of the most important skills a child will nurture as it serves as a pathway to other subjects (besides English) and is also a fantastic way for our pupils to develop their imaginations. So, on 6 th March, we launched the Healing Readathon a challenge to all of our pupils to read as many books as they could over 3 weeks. Pupils were given a form to record their reading and were required to get each book signed off by an adult. All of the pupils involved did very well with their reading achievements and we, as a school, are very proud that so many approached this challenge with such enthusiasm. A few days later, the results were in: 3rd place - Summer Peterson Winner of a Cadbury s Easter Egg 2nd place - Bethany Holton Winner of a 10 book voucher 1st place - Emily Oldridge Winner of a tablet complete with e-reader. Congratulations to the winners and well done to all who participated! Manga enthusiasts from Healing school recently enjoyed the S-Con manga and gaming convention at Scunthorpe baths hall, which was organised for the 6th year running by North Lincolnshire libraries. Manga, which originated in Japan after the second world war, is a specific style of illustrated fantasy adventure and usually comes in comic book or animated series format. It has a strong world wide fan base and has fast picked up popularity in the UK with young people and adults alike. Pupils had the opportunity to dress up as their favourite characters from the world of Japanese animation and take part in workshops, reenactments, games and competitions. 5 Page 5 Year 8 Risky World Project As an end to their topic on Risky World Year 8 s in Geography have been producing a project on volcanoes with most of the Year 8 s choosing to make a composite volcano 3D model. They then had the option to blow them up using a variety of different methods, from bicarbonate soda and vinegar to Coca Cola and Mentoes. Mentoes and Asda Coca Cola proved to be the most successful combination to produce an explosive eruption. Well done to the Year 8 s for successful projects! Years 7 and 8 Take Part in The Junior UK Maths Challenge On the 1 st May 2014, 30 Y7 and Y8 pupils from maths sets 1 and 2 were entered into the Junior UKMT maths challenge. It is a series of mathematical puzzle questions which test pupils lateral thinking and problem solving ability. Pupils receive either a bronze, silver or gold certificate. The results are in and of the 30 pupils entered, we have 2 gold certificates, 6 silver and 9 bronze. Unfortunately, not all who entered scored high enough for a certificate but all can be congratulated for taking part. The highest score overall went to Corey Allan in Y8 who also received the best in year for Y8. The best in year for Y7 went to Jack Hancock.

Page 6 Healing Cheerleading Team Raise Over 300 For New Kit Healing High Flyers Cheerleading squad recently held a successful (and delicious) cake sale.

Due to the Cheerleaders baking literally hundreds of cakes and biscuits, the cake sale took place over two days, as there was plenty for everyone.

6 Page 6 Healing Cheerleading Team Raise Over 300 For New Kit Healing High Flyers Cheerleading squad recently held a successful (and delicious) cake sale. The team baked their way to success and raised 211 towards new kit. Many pupils and staff enjoyed the wonderful selection of cakes, biscuits, doughnuts and free drinks in the sunshine. Due to the Cheerleaders baking literally hundreds of cakes and biscuits, the cake sale took place over two days, as there was plenty for everyone. A special thank you goes to all members of staff who baked to support the Cheerleaders, including delicious cup cakes from Miss Plant, Miss Crosby, Miss Clarke and a scrumptious chocolate cake from Miss Sass, who used her secret recipe. Pupils Marie Heywood and Eleanor Picket also baked special cupcakes that were designed especially for the Healing School cheerleading team. The P.E. department are also grateful to Mrs Addison, who contributed a further 100 towards this fund, making a grand total of 311 to go towards kit. The team dominated the game from start to finish, taking a 2-0 lead through inspirational captain Reece York. The first of the 2 goals was one of the best goals seen at Blundell park all season.

7 Page 7 Year 9 Football Team Become District Champions Healing entered into this final as the under dogs, having lost to Toll Bar in the previous two finals in Y7 and Y8. However, if you were in the crowd at Blundell Park you would have considered Healing to be the strongest team. The team dominated the game from start to finish, taking a 2-0 lead through inspirational captain Reece York. The first of the 2 goals was one of the best goals seen at Blundell park all season. Reece s right footed shot from outside the area went into the top corner of the net. Toll Bar came back into the game before half time with a goal of their own as Healing tired towards the end of the half. After the break, Healing came out all guns blazing. Again, Toll Bar didn t know what hit them and it was Lewis Collins who put Healing 2 ahead with a calmly taken goal, curling it round the keeper. By now Healing were well on top and Harry Hooper scored to make it 4-1, going into the final 10 minutes. Toll Bar did score again towards the end, but were never going to come back into the game. This was a complete team performance. Every player performed excellently in their role and this was the icing on the cake for what has been a brilliant season for the team. Siblings Compete in The British Karate Championships On 17th May 2014, talented siblings Charlotte and James Raynor participated in the British Karate Championships held at the Emirates arena in Glasgow. Year 9 pupil Charlotte received a bronze medal, coming third out of 14 competitors in the Kata individual female cadets section. Kata is a system of individual training exercises in karate. James, in Year 7, secured a silver medal in the Kumite freestyle fighting, for males under 12. He achieved second place out of seventeen competitors. Charlotte will now be part of the England squad who will go on to compete in the European championships in November.
