1 PARKS PERSPECTIVES Syracuse Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs January, 2017 PARKS DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES 100 YEARS It was Woodrow Wilson was president. The Chicago White Sox had won the World Series. John F. Kennedy, Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald were all born. The cost of a first-class postage stamp was 2-cents. The SU Orangemen s basketball team finished their season with a 16-1 record and was retroactively named the national champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Premo-Porretta Power Poll. And the Syracuse Parks Department was established by the NYS Legislature. Until this point, it had been a bureau of the Department of Public Works. So, to mark the Department s Centennial, a variety of programs and activities are being created. Stay tuned over the next few weeks and months for special events for you and your family to enjoy to help us celebrate. 3 LIFEGUARD HEROES AT SOUTWEST POOL Our Aquatics Division is diligent about training. Earlier this month, that training was put to the test with a remarkable outcome. On Jan. 6, a participant was swimming laps at our Southwest Pool when our Facilities Manager, Ellie Barvinchak, noticed something wasn't right. She, along with Justin Williams and Chris Black, sprung into action, pulling the participant from the pool and assessing his condition. Realizing he wasn't breathing and had no pulse, our staff let their training take over. Working seamlessly together, this trio was able to turn a conscious and talking participant over to the paramedics who later arrived on the scene. Kudos Ellie, Justin and Chris! HEALTHY PANCAKE BREAKFAST RECIPE TO START OFF THE NEW YEAR Oatmeal Pancakes Serves: 9; Serving Size: 2 pancakes 1/2 cup quick-cooking (not instant) rolled oats* 2 1/2 cups low-fat milk* 1 cup whole-wheat flour 3/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1 Tbsp. sugar 1 Tbsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 3 medium eggs* 1 tsp. vanilla extract From Cornell Cooperative Extension s Let s Get Cooking Cookbook, (and as prepared and served at the Department of Parks and Recreation s Family Wellness Night on December 8 th for more information on the Wellness Night, go to page 6: Canola oil spray 1.In a medium bowl, combine oats and milk. 2.Stir to blend. Set aside. 3.In a large bowl, combine whole-wheat and all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Blend well. 4.Add eggs and vanilla to oat mixture. Stir to blend, add to dry mixture. 5.Stir until ingredients are moist. 4 Home for the Holidays Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with Mayor Stephanie Miner, welcomed Central New Yorkers to the annual Clinton Square Tree Lighting Ceremonies on Nov. 25, followed by an Open House at City Hall, where the community was invited to have their pictures taken with the Mayor, Police Chief Frank Fowler and Fire Chief Paul Linnertz. Entertaining audiences at the Tree Lighting was Corcoran Live! and helping the Mayor light the tree this year were the winners of the Mayor s Share Your Story challenge. Thanks to the city crews for all their efforts in getting the tree delivered and decorated. And a special thanks to Holly Piazza, from Eastwood, for donating the tree.

5 Celebrating the Holidays with the Parks Department The staff at the Parks Department spent much of December presenting programs to spread holiday cheer to city residents, the youth attending our recreation centers and those at our senior centers. The Department also partnered with Peace Inc. and The Beat to show the movie Elf at the Landmark Theatre. Peace Inc. provided gifts to the kids following the film. COLLECTING MITTENS, HATS AND SCARVES The Bob Cecile Center is collecting new mittens, hats and scarves until Jan. 31 to be distributed to Syracuse youth during our winter season. Donations already have numbered over 100 articles of clothing. Like us on Facebook Syracuse Parks & Rec The Cecile Center is located at 174 W. 6 FAMILY FITNESS AND WELLNESS NIGHT CELEBRATES YEAR-END PROGRAM On December 8 th, at the Magnarelli Center in McChesney Park, our Youth Division brought together program youth, family, and friends in celebration of a full year of fitness programs, active sports activity, and healthful nutrition education, with the annual Family Fitness and Wellness Night. To kick off the 7 th Family Night event, Tommy Tanner, president of the Syracuse Silver Knights, and several team members led an exciting soccer clinic for a gym full of youth. Following the clinic, youth and family members, together, were able to sample both the physical activities, and nutrition education sessions that make up the Fit Kids After School wellness program. Opportunities to try wheelchair basketball, giant board games, or a high-energy fitness circuit were available in the gymnasium while healthy snack making lessons took place in the classroom. Families gathered during the evening to witness an enthralling Kung Fu demonstration, and, as a finale, a magnificent performance from Kirk Park s African Dance and Drum team. Throughout the evening, health information was made available at tables staffed by Fidelis Care and County Health Department, and all youth left with a drawstring backpack filled with nutritious snacks, jump ropes, and other items, courtesy of the Downtown YMCA. Family Fitness and Wellness Night is made possible each year because of our City s Recreation staff, and the dedicated partners in health that help power the Fit Kids program throughout the year!
