1 Seniors on the Go ALVIN PARKS AND RECREATION COMMENTS FROM THE COORDINATOR- SHERRY WOLFE The first month of 2008 has flown by as usual. The year started on a wonderful note with our annual Noon Year Bash. So lets kick-off February with our new Football Friday Frenzy. Also this month we are celebrating February s famous heart holiday in a slightly different fashion. This year we are celebrating the heart that means the most, your heart! Join us for a delicious heart healthy lunch and learn some new techniques to keep you ticker in tip top shape. HEARTH HEALTHY HAPPENING Its is the time of year where all you see is hearts everywhere. But we aren t celebrating the valentine s heart we are celebrating your heart. Come enjoy a Heart Healthy lunch with us! All food will be prepared with your most important organ in mind. Make your reservation with a staff member by February 4th. DATE: February 14, 2008 TIME: 12:30 PM COST: FREE If you insist on celebrating Valentine s Day in the traditional fashion you may find it interesting to know why valentine cards are usually signed with xoxo. Many years ago the majority of people could not sign their name so the x was an acceptable signature. They often kissed the x to show their sign of sincerity and agreement. The practice of kissing the x quickly made the x a symbol of a kiss. So keep that in mind next time you sign on the x! Enjoy a free night of dancing and mingling with the outstanding PALS students. Refreshments will be provided. DATE: February 19 TIME: 7 PM COST: FREE Great Day Houston It has been months since we have paid Whitney Casey a visit so we are heading back to watch the live taping of the Great Day Houston show. Reserve your spot by February 5th. DATE: February 12 TIME: 7 AM COST: $4 plus lunch L auberge Du Lac Every other month we go to the fabulous Coushatta Casino in Kinder, LA. But there is a new casino in the area and we think everyone should check it out! If you haven t already visited the beautiful L auberge Du Lac in Lake Charles, L.A. then this is your chance. In Alvin, volunteers are needed to work in several areas to help benefit others. For example, schools are always looking for tutors, while nonprofit organizations are in need of secretarial help. RSVP, a program specifically for senior citizens, can help you find a place to volunteer, and feel good about your contribution. The organization also signs up locations for volunteers to work. There is no cost to join, and volunteers receive some great benefits for their work. If you have an interest in RSVP, please call Kathleen Holton, Program Coordinator at

Home of Texas wine, wildflowers and German food. During this excursion we will venture out on a Texas hill country wine tour. Stop by Wild Seed Farms to catch the blue bonnets in full bloom. Then take in some of the quaint downtown shops and enjoy a delicious German dinner at Auslanders. Price includes transportation and accommodations (double occupancy). Complimentary breakfast will be provided by the hotel.
