We celebrated out 10th anniversary in April of this year. 2 New This Quarter Senior s on the Go The new bus is officially here!! Commissioner Jack Harris helped make all of our dreams a reality and we now have a 20 passenger bus that is handicap accessible to use on all of our trips. For our regular trip goers I know you are breathing a sigh of relief. We can now go more places and take more over night trips. Don t hesitate to let us know if there is someplace you have always wanted to go. With this new bus there is no stopping us!! Crafty Afternoons Get in touch with your crafty side every Wednesday from 3-4 pm. Learn how to make everything from jewelry to tissue holders. If you can dream it up you can make it in this class. Craftiness begins Wednesday, October 4th. ActionS site director Lupe Hadlett is volunteering her afternoons to lead this class. She has been working here at the Center with the ActionS program and is truly an asset to the Alvin Senior Program. The Senior Center family has grown. Stop by and say hello to our new additions! 3 Special Events in October Celebrity Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre We are pleased to welcome the only comedy murder mystery show with a cast of celebrity impersonators. This group of actors performs everywhere from New York to Las Vegas. This evening of fun includes the show and a plated dinner. Tickets are $30 per person. The mystery begins Friday, October 27th, 6 PM at the Alvin Senior Center. Seating is limited so get your ticket today. IMAX - Ocean Oasis An endless, barren dessert. An ocean teeming with life. Where in the world can you find these two opposite worlds existing side by side? Only on the giant IMAX Screen. Meet at the Center Tuesday, October 10th at 9 AM. Cost is $10 plus the cost of your lunch. And we re off! To Gulf Greyhound Park for a day of exciting greyhound races Friday, October 13th at 12 PM. We will fuel up on a delicious buffet at the race track to get ready for the exciting Greyhound Racing! Cost is $10, which includes meal and transportation. Coushatta This is our last trip to Coushatta for the year. Hit it big one last time in We are leaving from Stanton s Parking Lot at Tuesday, October 24th at 7 AM. Cost is $5 per person. Senior Day at Brazoria County Fair Alvin ActionS won every prize in the bonnet contest last year so we have to return to defend our title. Tuesday, October 17th is Senior Day at the Fair. We are leaving the Center at 8 AM. Start working on your bonnets!! Page 3 Alvin Red Peppers - Meeting and Munching Our October meeting will start at 9:15 AM at the Center with a planning session for our Christmas party and then we are headed to Benihana s for some authentic Japanese Cuisine. Cost is $3 plus the cost of your meal.
4 More Events in October Clearlake Sailboat Races Wednesday, October 4th is the last race of the 2006 season. Find out who the fleet champs will be from the comfort of Claudio s restaurant. We will be leaving from the Center at 3 PM. Cost is $2 plus the cost of your dinner. Lunch Bunch - 2J s Join us Friday, October 6th at 10:15 AM as we head to Brazoria for a beautiful lunch on the San Bernard River. 2J s specializes in seafood and steak and has wonderful daily specials. Cost is $5 plus the cost of your meal. Special Events in November West Side Story TUTS presents this timeless Romeo and Juliet tale of forbidden love retold to the music of Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein with the backdrop of twentieth-century New York City gangs. Meet at the Senior Center at 6:30 PM Thursday, November 2nd for the 8 PM showing at the Hobby Center. Cost is $40 per person Haak Winery Saturday, November 18th at 12 pm we are headed to the Haak winery for a day of free music in the vines provided by Zydeco Joe & the H-Town Players. Cost is $2 per person. Bring your own lawn chair and picnic basket. Page 4 Alvin Red Peppers Trip to Old Town Spring Old Town Spring is just the place to start your holiday shopping at a leisurely pace! We will be leaving from the Center at 9 AM and back around 4:30 PM. Cost is $6 per person.
5 More Events in November Peanut Butter Warehouse You have not been to Galveston until you have been shopping at the Peanut Butter Warehouse. Enjoy this shopping tradition Monday, November 13th at 9:30 AM. Cost is $3 per person plus the cost of your lunch. Museum of Fine Arts Best in Show! The Dog in Art from the Renaissance to Today exhibit is now at the Museum of Fine Arts. View these masterpieces Thursday, November 9th. Cost is $3 per person plus the cost of your lunch. We will be leaving from the Center at 9 AM. International Quilt Festival Join us for a celebration of great quilts! This event is known as the Worlds Fair of Quilts. We will be leaving from the Senior Center 9 AM on Friday, November 3rd. Cost is $12 per person. Lunch Bunch Panchos You just can t beat all you can eat Mexican Food! Come raise the flag with us 11 AM Monday, November 6th. Cost is $2 plus the cost of your meal. raise the flag! Shopping Trip to San Marcos This is bargain hunting at its best. Tanger Outlet Center in San Marcos has over 100 outlet stores. Get a good nights sleep on Friday because Saturday, November 11th we are going to shop until we drop. We are leaving from the Center at 7 AM and heading to San Marcos for a day of shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall. We will be back in Alvin by 9 PM. Cost is $22 per person transportation fee. Page 5
6 Special Events in December Green Tee Lets get in the spirit of the season with a trip to view the lights in the Green Tee community. We will be leaving at 4:30 PM Dec., 21st to have dinner at Big Humphrey s in Pearland and then its off to the lights. Cost is $2 per person plus the cost of your meal. Christmas Spectacular For the first time ever, direct from NY, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, starring the world famous Rockettes will be at the Hobby Center. Cost is $37 per person. We are leaving from the Center at 12:30 PM Wednesday, December 13th. Lunch Bunch - Grand Buffet Rumor has it that everyone loves Chinese Buffets. Well...you asked for it so here it is! Friday, December 1st at 11 AM we will be off to eat all we can at the Grand Buffet in League City. Cost is $2 plus the cost of your meal. Great Caruso The XMAS Show is back at Great Caruso. Be served an amazing meal while enjoying a variety show of music, singing, tap, and an XMAS special. Cost is $58 per person which includes your dinner and the show. Meet at the Center 5:30 PM Tuesday, December 19th. Alvin Red Peppers Holiday Events Get the party started with the Red Hat Holiday Fiesta Tuesday, December 5th from 6-9 PM. Cost is $10 per person plus be sure to bring a $5-10 gift for the gift exchange. Then finish the fun December 15th at our Progressive Dinner starting at 5 PM. Holiday Trail of Lights The Holiday Trail of Lights is famous for having some of the most beautiful holiday lights in the Texas/Louisiana area. On our maiden voyage we are going to Jefferson, Marshall, and Kilgore TX to check out their impressive holiday displays. We will depart from the Senior Center 7 AM Thursday, December 7th and return the afternoon of Saturday, December 9th. Cost is $150 per person, this includes transportation, hotel for two nights, breakfast the 8th and the 9th and tour fees. You will need to bring money for your meals. * Register by Nov. 7th.* Page 6
7 Announcements The Senior Center is available for rentals. We will be happy to assist you with birthdays, graduation parties, baby showers, weddings, anniversaries, etc. Call (281) for more information. Be sure to pick up our monthly newsletters, available at the Senior Center, to see updates and new programs each month. The Senior Center will be closed November 23rd and 24th and December 25th and 26th. The Alvin Senior Center will be hosting its first ever Ms. Alvin Senior Pageant Saturday, April 21, Anyone interested in being a participant in this pageant should talk to a staff member so that we can get you registered. Winners of this pageant will win a trip to go compete in the Ms. Texas Senior Pageant in Plano, TX.
