1 HOPEWELL MOOSE NEWS Premier Lodge Award Hopewell Moose Family Center Newsletter FEB 2017 ONE YEAR FREE to Active Military/First Responders Overview: Members of the military and first responders have always been individuals who have gravitated towards the Moose, often providing effective leadership for our lodges and chapters. In almost every case, they are solid members of their communities and productive members of the fraternal unit in which they belong. This program focuses on these two groups and offers a significant cost savings for new individuals who may be interested and asked to join the Moose. Time frame: January 1, 2017 April 29, 2017, with the option of extending the program through December 31st, 2017 if it proves to be successful in attracting this demographic. Program: Moose International, LOOM and WOTM of the Hopewell Moose Lodge waived all fees and dues for a new or reenrolled member as a pilot program making the first year membership FREE and is endorsed by the Supreme Council, Grand Council and the Board of Officers for the Hopewell Moose Lodge. Men and women of the military (active) and first responders join at no cost. However; the Lodge is asking that these new members be asked to attend orientations, functions, dinners, social quarter activities and Heart of the Community. This special group of NEW MEM- BERS will be asked to attend an orientiation on schedule for 3 March and 7 April. Additionally, members of both groups who join the Moose via this program are urged to promote membership to their colleagues, thus increasing the impact of the program. As part of the program, the Moose Legion Council and the Hopewell Moose Legion also waived all international dues and fees for any current active military or first responder, as well as all new members of these groups who qualify during the proposed time frame. Who Is Included? Active Duty Military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Active Reservist First Responders: Law Enforcement, Firefighters (full-time and volunteer), Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians Not included at this time: Veterans, doctors, nurses, National Guard, Moose multimembers How do I Fill Out and Submit the Application? Complete and submit a membership application as you would any other. In the employer and/or occupation line, indicate the area (active military or first responder) where the individual qualifies and give the specific title as requested (i.e. First Responder, Anytown Fire Station, Firefighter). Since the lodge waived its portion of the dues, you simply need to turn in the application. Do not collect any fees. 2 Myrtle Casey Senior Luncheon NEXT: 16 Feb / TIME: Noon 48 members attended the Senior Luncheon on 19 January. The winner of the Moose Bucks for this month was Rachel McCann. Make your plans to attend next month on 16 Feb for a great time. COME TO THE BEST MEAL IN TOWN Senior Lunch Chairman Jack Casey Administrator Message In an effort, to keep our members and bingo patrons informed, during inclement weather, we have been added to both NBC12 and WTVR6 notifications, that run at the bottom of your TV screen. Should severe weather occur, look to these channels for closing information. Also, effective Feb 1, the office hours will change to Tues-Fri 10am-5pm. Fraternally, Brad Ozmore Junior Governor's Message Hopewell Moose Lodge Members, as many of you are aware, Brad Ozmore became the Acting Administrator last summer. This left his position as Junior Governor vacant. I was asked to return to the Board of Officers to fill the vacancy. Last month Brad was voted in as the Administrator by the LOOM. Effective 1 Feb the I will fill the position of Governor until the Elections. With these transitions, I would like to assure you that the Board of Officers will continue to do the exemplary job. As your Board of Officers have frequently stated, we would like to hear your thoughts and address your concerns. In order to do this we need your help. We request that you attend the General Membership meetings on the 1st & 3rd Thursday of every month. This is where you can present your ideas and/or concerns. If having your voice heard isn't good enough, did you know that just by attending you could win up to $500. Yes, $500!!! So instead of letting your voice only be heard by the members sitting next to you in the Social Quarters or by your friends and family, bring them to the General Membership meeting where it can be addressed appropriately. On a personal note, I would like to thank all of you for your well wishes, thoughts & prayers for the recent loss of my father, Jim Gaskill. Although it was before I was affiliated with the Moose, I recall him being an active member and frequently volunteering before they were relocated in 1986 to Ohio. Ohio is where my mother, Jo- Ann Gaskill, still resides. It was his wish as a member of the Shriner s, in leu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Cincinnati, Ohio. You can copy this link and hit the button at the top right, "Donate". Remember, it's a tax deductible for you. In closing, remember your lodge is here for you, so please be here for it. Help when and where you can. The power of many can be much greater and with less effort then the power of one with all the effort. Brian Carpenter, Junior Governor / MOOSE PROUD Admin Staff Message Tickets for Dances/Events go on sale 30 days prior to the Dance/Event. 3 Senior Regents Message If you are tired of the unusually cold winter weather that gripped this area in January, there may be a reprieve if nature's weatherman cooperates. The annual appearance of the groundhog on February 2nd is anxiously awaited as an indication of the early arrival of spring. The custom of using groundhogs, or woodchucks, to predict weather for the following six weeks was brought to America by people from Germany and Great Britain. According to the legend, the groundhog awakens from its winter sleep on February 2nd and sticks his head out of the ground to look around. If the sun is shining and the groundhog sees his shadow, he crawls back into his hole in fright, signalling six more weeks of winter weather. If the day is cloudy, the groundhog does not see his shadow and stays outside, indicating that spring is just around the corner. Although science has not confirmed the reliability of this method of weather forecasting, people anxiously await reports of groundhog sightings. Punxsutawney Phil, Pennsylvania's famous furry forecaster, is widely considered the authority in early weather warnings. Regardless of the weather conditions outside, our lodge will be nice, warm and inviting. The WOTM are especially excited about our Sweetheart Dance scheduled for Friday, February 10th. Music will be performed by Smokin' Hot. Tickets are $15.00 in advance, $18.00 at the door. Make plans now to reserve your favorite table, bring your Sweetheart and dance the night away. Check our calendar for other great ways to escape the cold weather. Sundays and Tuesdays, bingo begins at 6:30 PM, Trivia with a Twist is held on 2nd and 4th Thursdays. Don't forget the Senior Luncheon on the 3rd Thursday each month. Wednesday and Friday evenings we'll be serving your favorite meals followed by DJ music for dancing. Our WOTM meetings are on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 7:30 PM. We invite each of you to attend. Coming up in March the Nominating Committee will be selecting applicants to fill our Board of Officers positions: Senior Regent, Junior Regent, Secretary and Recorder. If you would be interested in one of these positions, please give me a call. Madelyn W. Collier Senior Regent All people SMILE in the same language. Ladies, please be advised, the first meeting of the nominating committee will be held immediately following the regular meeting of the WOTM on February 1st at approximately 8:30 PM. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions: Senior Regent, Junior Regent, Recorder, Secretary-Treasurer. Likewise, we also need Committee Chairwomen. We sincerely ask that you attend this meeting and be a part of the 'new year' for the Women of the Moose. Remember we have a busy schedule packed with all kinds of activities to get us to spring. We are having fun at the Hopewell Moose Lodge every night of the week! Sunday and Tuesday nights are Bingo nights. On Mondays, don t forget the Queen of Hearts drawing. The jackpot is growing and you may as well be the winner! Upcoming Events Feb 10-The Women of the Moose are hosting a Valentines Dance like they have never done before. Gary Lowder and SMOKIN HOT will take the stage at 8. The members have years of musical experience in various genres ranging from Soul, Southern Rock, Beach, Country, Blues, Motown and just about everything in between. The members have performed up and down the East coast with other established professional bands since 1986 and have always wanted to branch out and cover several genres and offer something for everyone. This will be an elegant event as it always is with the wine and cheese tasting, fellowship, music and dancing. Food, wine and cheese tasting will be from 6 until 8. The live music and dancing will crank up from 8 until 11. Ticket for this event is $20 per person. This is a non-smoking event. BYOB. The first workshop will be on February 12th from 2 until 4. Refreshments will be supplied. The rest of the schedule will be March 12th, April 9th, May 7th, and June 4th.. Bring your kids, your grandkids, a neighbor s or friend s kids. It will be fun for all! Art Seward, Entertainment Chairman We hope to see you at every event! Art Seward, Entertainment Chairman 5

The Moose has a 128 year commitment to working families, and new, innovative plans are underway to meet today's needs. It will target 3 under tapped & specific areas, and will be profitbased. These centers will not replace existing lodges, but will be "in addition to" our lodge homes. They are designed for the working families, of today & tomorrow. In addition to being bright, airy, open and technology supportive, a high focus will be on Tommy Moose and our Heart of Community. They will feature: 1) Kitchen/Market Cafe: A neighborhood kitchen & bright cafes with nourishing choices. Offering the "Best-In-Class" eat in and take out fresh, wholesome food options for the family and individuals. 2) Complete "Co-Working": Offering state of the art, flexible, gathering and meeting spaces. These areas will be "technology smart" resulting in productive, fluid offices to meet today's changing workforce needs. 3) Drop-in Daycare: Using a "Discovery & Play" innovative approach with the Mooseheart curriculum. Whether your needs are for an hour or a day, the "drop-in" option allows you greater flexibility to meet your needs. ~ D.M. Ozmore Jr Grad Regent Academy of Friendship Congratulations to Janice Hayzlett, our newest Academy of Friendship coworker! Janice was conferred at our Mid-year Conference held in Norfolk, on January 23, This was long overdue, as she was eligible and slated to receive this degree last year; but a heavy snowfall prevented many from traveling to Norfolk for that portion of our conference. In total, the State of Virginia, Women of the Moose, had 76 co-workers present that received their "Academy of Friendship" Degree. This is the first degree for the WOTM. These women came from lodges/chapters all throughout Virginia. Way to go! Special thanks to Portsmouth Chapter #966 for hostessing this conference, and to all the special guests and dignitaries, past & present, for your efforts to ensure a successful conference for all. Our chapter has several women who are eligible to receive their A/F Degree. We urge each of you, to take the time and join us at our next Mid-Year Conference, to receive your honors. These honors will remain with you throughout your "Moose" lifespan, even if you transfer lodges. If you qualified several years ago, you are STILL eligible to receive your degree, you would just need to contact our Chapter's Recorder prior to our next Mid -Year conference for details. These are your personal honors that you worked hard for, whether it was from holding a chairmans position and sponsoring 2 new members, or from sponsoring 5 new members. Your hard work should not go unnoticed, and only helps to strengthen our chapter. ~ D.M. Ozmore Jr Grad Regent 8
