OUR GYM & COACHING STAFF Midnight Cheer began in 2002 as the Phoenix Flames, a part of Phoenix Gymnastics Club s competitive programs. After 4 years, we became our own club with our own name and less than 3 years after that we moved into our very own facility in March of 2009! Our training gym is conveniently located near 70 th & Granville, in the Marpole area of Vancouver, and is dedicated to cheerleading, tumbling, and fitness opportunities. We have over 2,300 square feet of sprung floor, a 30 foot tumble track, a trampoline, and various tumbling and stunting training equipment! Midnight Cheer Gym: 1634 West 75 th Avenue Vancouver, BC V6P 6G2 Gym Line: Our coaching staff are all USASF credentialed and certified to teach stunting, basket toss, and tumbling skills. In addition, we require our tumbling coaches to acquire a minimum of NCCP Level 1 Artistic Gymnastics certification; most of these coaches have their Level 2 or 3. Safety is our number one priority and there is always a coach with First Aid Certification in the gym. Program Director Karen Fraser has been coaching cheerleading in Vancouver for over 18 years and is a former BC Lions Cheerleader! Many of our coaches are still actively cheering with the Midnight Supernova Open Level 6 team. Our staff attends cheerleading clinics and conferences throughout the season and is committed to staying current with industry coaching methods and standards to better train our athletes. We truly care about the kids we work with and are invested in their individual and team successes! ALL-STAR CHEERLEADING All-star simply means that the athletes involved do not represent one particular school; in contrast, school cheerleading refers to teams that are made up of athletes who all attend the same school. All-star cheerleading is one of Canada s fastest growing sports and is quickly gaining popularity throughout the world did you know that there are over 40 countries in the world that actively participate in competitive cheerleading? There is even a Worlds Cheerleading Competition! All-star competitive cheerleading is an athletic sport that combines elements of gymnastics and dance with our own unique fundamentals of stunting, pyramids, and basket tosses. These skills require lots of repetition and focus to perform safely and to make them look easy that is the goal! Cheerleading teaches athletes strength, power, flexibility, endurance, balance, selfconfidence, body awareness, teamwork, leadership, and the importance of communication. In BC alone, there are over 4,000 athletes registered in school, university, community, and all-star cheerleading.

THE IASF LEVELS EXPLAINED All-star cheerleading is governed by the IASF, the International All-Star Federation. This non-profit organization s mission is to maximize the number of participants benefiting from the positive life experiences of all-star cheerleading and dance by developing competition rules and all star gym training guidelines consistent with the latest best known safety, educational, and ethical practices. The IASF provides rules and regulations designed for proper progression of skill acquisition through 6 levels. These rules and regulations are followed by cheer clubs across North America and encourage safe and fair competitive events for the athletes. Midnight Cheer is a proud member of the IASF and we build our teams around the IASF levels to set them up for success throughout the year. Athletes at Midnight are placed on teams primarily according to their skill set in the areas below. In addition, and where applicable, the coaches also consider the athlete s past performance including attendance and health, level of motivation and commitment, and overall coach-ability. Our competitive teams are called the Midnight Flames and this year we are happy to offer a competitive team for each age division from Mini to Senior!

OUR ELITE PROGRAM Our Elite Cheer teams have a higher expectation of time & financial commitment and have minimum tumbling and stunting requirements. They are for athletes who have more cheer experience, higher-level tumbling and stunting skills, and have families that can incorporate travel into their schedules as well as place cheer at the top of their extra-curricular activities. Our elite cheer teams are called the Midnight Stars and we are excited to offer 4 elite teams for our 18 & under athletes! TEAM DESCRIPTIONS & PRACTICE SCHEDULE Please find below our team descriptions and practice schedule. A few things to note: The age used to determine team placements is the age of the athlete on August 31 st, The commitment for both Competitive and Elite athletes is 10 months, from September to June. Athletes who wish to be a part of our Elite program in the season are required to attend mandatory summer choreography camps (last 2 weeks of Aug) as well as more casual weekly team training. 6 CROSSOVERS Crossovers are athletes who train and compete with more than one team. Being a crossover athlete accelerates an athlete s potential to learn and become a high level cheerleader; it is a unique opportunity that many of our athletes have benefitted from dramatically. Athletes may request to be considered as a crossover to a second team depending on what that athlete can contribute to the specific needs of that second team. Coaches will assess each situation individually. Crossovers must be prepared for the additional training hours (usually only one additional day per week) and crossover training fees of $30/month, except Senior 4 which is $45/month. Additional competition fees will be added to your athlete statement at the end of the competitive season *except Senior 4* as they vary from event to event, but are less than regular team competition fees. Additional uniform fees may or may not apply. TUMBLING CLASSES & PRIVATE LESSONS In addition to regular team practices, it is important that Midnight Cheer athletes understand the benefits of taking additional tumbling classes and/or private lessons. Team practices are spent on a variety of skills, which include but are not limited to tumbling, so athletes who are motivated to move to a higher level team need to be actively advancing their tumbling skills by doing additional training throughout the year. We offer two tumbling classes on the weekends, each open to all skill levels: Fridays 7-9 pm Saturdays 11 am 1 pm FALL SESSION WINTER SESSION SPRING SESSION September 7/14/21/28 January 18/25 April 12/26 October 5/12/19/26 February 8/22 May 2/10/17/24/31 November 2/9/16/23/30 March 1/8/15 June 7/14/21 December classes = $ hst 7 classes = $ hst 10 classes = $198+hst September 8/15/22/29 October 6/13/20/27 November 3/10/17/24 December classes = $ hst January 19/26 February 9/23 March 9/16 6 classes = $ hst April 13/20/27 May 4/11/18/25 June 1/8/15/22 11 classes = $ hst Athletes may register for these classes on a per class basis (48 hrs minimum advance registration required), at $22+hst/class, or by signing up for a full session which provides a 10% quantity discount. 1-hour private and semi-private lessons can be booked during the following times, dependent upon the requested coach s availability: Monday through Thursday, from 3:45 4:45 pm Saturdays, between 1:00 4:00 pm Note: we require 48 hrs to change or cancel classes booked as staff are hired based on registration numbers. Late changes/cancelations may be assessed a fee of 50% of the class fee; not showing up to a class booked will require full payment for that class. To register, contact lisa@midnightcheer.com!

INDIVIDUALS & GROUP STUNT Anyone wishing to showcase an individual routine or be a part of a group stunt team must do so in addition to their regular team practices. The individuals and group stunt teams that represent Midnight Cheer at competitions should highlight the best all-around athletes from within each age group at our gym. Individual cheerleaders MUST be a current training member of a Midnight Cheer team in order to represent the club. Group Stunt teams will consist of 4 5 girls from a particular age division. Practice schedules for both Individual cheerleaders and Group Stunt teams may be booked based on the same availability & rules listed under Tumbling Classes & Private Lessons. Pricing will depend on the training/competition schedule coordinated and will include costs for training, choreography, music, and competition fees. Please contact lisa@midnightcheer.com for more information. UNIFORMS & CLUB APPAREL All athletes are required to purchase team/club merchandise as well as a competition uniform. TEAM/CLUB MERCHANDISE may be purchased new or used (if available) and include the items listed below. Many of these items have not changed for this year so if you already own these items you will not need to re-purchase. For girls team shorts, spankies (worn under uniform skirt & often under team shorts), cheer shoes, make-up kit, competition bow (same one as last year), cheer bag For boys team shorts, cheer shoes, cheer bag SIZING for the above items will be done at our Sizing & Swap Meet on Saturday, September 8 th. COMPETITION UNIFORMS may be purchased used or new for both Flames and Stars athletes, except Senior L3 and Senior L4 athletes who must purchase the new Midnight uniform (to be revealed in September!). SIZING FOR ALL COMPETITION UNIFORMS will be done on Saturday, September 15 th. PLEASE NOTE: We require all athletes to wear their team training gear t-shirt, shorts, cheer shoes, and a bow - to all team practices. This is for many reasons: 1) teams look and feel (psychologically) like teams when members are wearing the same clothing, 2) from the coaches perspective, when watching choreographed movement, individual clothing can be distracting to the eye, 3) wearing a bow during practices gives the athlete the feeling they will have when wearing it during their competition routine - this allows them to become accustomed to something being attached to their head while performing! In addition: Athletes are not specifically required to wear only the team bow to practices, they may choose to purchase / make / win (we often give bows as prizes) a variety of practice bows! Athletes are welcome to wear alternate clothing items (including cheer event clothing) to any tumble classes and/or private lessons. Athletes are required to wear their Midnight Cheer training gear when representing Midnight at competitions, fundraisers, and events.

COMPETITION INFORMATION & SCHEDULE This is a Preliminary Schedule and a CONFIRMED Schedule will be communicated in September, as changes to these schedules are not within our control. In addition, please note the following: All scheduled competitions for your team are mandatory unless there are extenuating circumstances. All athletes 11 & under are required to have a parent or guardian present with them at all competitions. If a parent/guardian is not available to attend then it is the responsibility of that parent to find a suitable chaperone for their child for that competition. All athletes are expected to stay in full uniform and be present at each competition until after the awards for your team/level have ended. Leaving a competition early is NOT acceptable; we expect all athletes to cheer on other Midnight teams and show support for one another. In addition, we expect to be able to take full team pictures with awards after the presentation. Leaving early may mean not getting your medal/trophy or being absent for your team s photo. Midnight Cheer athletes are expected to show support and respect for other cheer programs especially while in the public eye; this includes competitions, events, and internet activity. 11 RULES & REGULATIONS Please read the following information carefully and ask a Midnight Cheer staff member if you have any questions! These Rules & Regulations are here to provide you and your family with an understanding of the expectations that come with your participation as a Midnight Cheer program member. Attendance Please be prepared and on time for all practices. On time means that you are on the floor and ready to practice the minute your scheduled practice begins. This means that you need to arrive at the gym minutes early to change shoes/clothes, put your hair up, get taped, etc. ALL TEAM PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY. Unless determined by your Doctor to be contagious, you should still attend team practice (sitting out on the side) and observe/learn even if you don t feel well enough to actively participate. If an athlete becomes sick unexpectedly and must miss a practice, a personal phone call directly to the gym or the athlete s cheer coach MUST be made as early as possible. Think about it: if every team member were allowed to miss one practice, we would have 15 practices (almost two months!!) without full team attendance. We cannot do our job as coaches if we are unable to work with the entire team at every practice. Therefore, practices are mandatory. Coaches have the right to remove a team member from performing at a competition if that athlete misses a practice directly leading up to that competition. Time Management/Extra-Curricular Events Please manage your school time effectively, as this is your first priority. Cheer is an extra-curricular activity and we believe that all athletes are capable of performing well in school, while still keeping their commitment to their Midnight Cheer team. It s about prioritizing. Regular doctor & dentist appointments, concert/theatre opportunities, and social party plans must not conflict with the schedule of events and practices. Please schedule these appointments/opportunities/plans on nonpractice days. They are not acceptable reasons for jeopardizing the success of the entire team. Illness & Injuries If you are injured (due to cheerleading or otherwise) and this injury will affect your participation in cheerleading, you are still expected to attend your team practices (sitting out on the side and/or doing what you can) to keep up with what is being taught. In addition, if an injury keeps you from participating in practice, Midnight requires a Doctor s note or a note from your parent clearing you to return BEFORE you may participate again. All injuries must be reported to your coach immediately, no matter how insignificant the injury seems and whether or not it is cheer-related. Withholding Cheer as a Punishment Midnight Cheer families must agree that they will not withhold participation in cheer as a punishment tool, as they would use taking away TV, the internet, or going out with friends. This is because every member of a team depends on every other member s participation. A parent withholding participation at Midnight Cheer as a punishment punishes the whole team, and ultimately the program, not just their child. We respect that a parent has the right to discipline their own child but they do not have the right to punish 15 other children and families who have worked hard and invested the same time and money to be a part of this team. If there are any concerns with behavior outside of cheer, please contact your child s coach to coordinate a solution that will not affect the whole team.

RULES & REGULATIONS continued Proper Attire For safety hair must be pulled away from the face & off the neck, cheer shoes worn, & absolutely no jewelry or finger nails past the tips of your fingers as these can harm others. Do NOT be surprised if a coach pulls out a nail clipper to shorten hazardous nails! There is to be absolutely NO SMOKING/ALCOHOL/DRUGS when in uniform, at a cheerleading event, or when representing Midnight Cheer in any way. Gym Etiquette & Safety Only registered athletes are permitted in the training area. Parents must ask permission before entering the training floor. No use of equipment is permitted without the supervision of a Midnight coach. No stunting or tumbling is permitted in or around the gym without the supervision of a Midnight coach. Parents are not permitted to spot or assist tumbling and/or stunting and it is not recommended that parents or friends assist these types of skills at home without certified supervision and instruction. Spectators are not permitted in the gym except for the last 15 minutes of practice ONLY. No parent/siblings/friends are allowed on the gym floor/training area unless invited; a viewing area is provided. Food, beverages, and gum are not permitted on the training floor. Cell phones must be kept on silent mode during training; parents are encouraged to phone the gym if they need to contact their child in an emergency situation. Athletes who do not comply with this rule will have their cell phones taken away during their training time. Our facility is nut-free, as several athletes are severely allergic. Midnight Cheer is not responsible for lost/stolen valuables at the gym. To avoid disappointment, please leave valuables at home and label your items. Sportsmanship & Respect At practices, events, and competitions, both athletes and parents are expected to represent Midnight Cheer in a professional manner by displaying good sportsmanship, supporting other teams and programs, and being positive role models for others. It is essential that there be respect between teammates, parents, coaches, and members of other programs. Any disrespect toward others will not be tolerated. Athletes will accept team awards respectfully, no matter what the expectation or outcome. Communication & Concerns We will do our best to ensure proper communication through our website and s. We encourage you to stay actively involved in the communication process by checking your often and our website regularly as it will contain important information. We also request that you attend all scheduled parent meetings. In order to provide the most positive experience possible for all of our athletes, we ask that parents not discuss their concerns with or in front of the athletes. A scheduled time with the team s coach to discuss any concerns can be arranged in private. Transitions Midnight Cheer may add/move athletes to different teams at any time during the season based on these criteria: attendance, maturity, skill-level, parental support and financial ability. Transitions of this nature are always at the coaches discretion and are never made without much discussion and consideration first.

PAYMENT POLICIES & PROCEDURES Having our own facility comes with much responsibility. Everyone must contribute to help promote the Midnight Cheer Gym and all of the programs that it offers. It is also imperative that all families make payments on time and ensure that there are sufficient funds to cover their children s monthly fees. All membership and tuition fees collected are immediately paid out to rent, utilities, equipment, insurance, gym needs and requirements, and coaches salaries. All additional fees are immediately paid out to the competition companies, uniform suppliers, choreographers, music editors, etc. Therefore, there are ZERO refunds on all payments TO DATE including, but not limited to, tuition, competition fees, uniform payments, camp/clinic payments, etc. Please note and adhere to the following payment policies and procedures: 1. Membership & Insurance Fees are non-refundable. We currently accept cheques or cash only. 2. Cheques can be made payable to Midnight Cheer Athletics. There will be a $25 fee for returned cheques, due immediately. 3. A 2% interest fee will be charged monthly to accounts overdue by 30 days or longer. 4. Classes will run pending registration. If cancellation is required, you will be notified by Midnight and tuition fees for that specific class will be fully refunded. 5. Athletes registered in any of our programs are expected to be emotionally and socially capable of conducting themselves appropriately with their peers/coaches and to actively participate in all of the program activities. Athletes who do not demonstrate these abilities may be asked to withdraw from the program. 6. Athletes are welcome to participate in their cheer practices only when their accounts are up-to-date and all required payments have been arranged; this will be strictly enforced. 7. An athlete s account must be in good standing in order to participate in additional activities such as camps, clinics, competitions, and other special events. 8. We reserve the right to cancel or decline a registration at any time. 9. If a member withdraws before the 1st day of class, 90% of the 10-month total will be refunded. 10. For competitive and elite team athletes, no refunds or credits will be issued after Sept. 30th. 11. Classes missed due to injury, illness, vacation or time off will not be pro-rated. 12. All sales are final on Midnight Cheer Athletics uniforms, clothing, shoes and accessories. 13. There are no refunds on monies paid out by Midnight on behalf of athletes for competitions and travel. Although we have tried, we cannot pre-determine every possible circumstance that may arise; therefore, requests for refunds in exceptional and extenuating circumstances will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. In these circumstances, requests must be made in writing to lisa@midnightcheer.com. Early Termination The Midnight Cheer Program is a 10-month commitment. An athlete quitting mid-season causes multiple problems for their team and the program in general. When someone quits, instead of their team spending their limited practice time on improving that time is spent re-choreographing and re-learning the routines to fill in the missing spots. It is a severe setback on the entire team that has worked so hard and is fulfilling their 10-month commitment to their team. It is unfair that the whole team must suffer because someone cannot fulfill their commitment. Early termination does not mean that your payments end early; if you choose to leave the program at any time during the year, you are still required to continue your monthly payment amounts until June.
