2 President s prattle WELL, WERRIBEE HAS BEEN RUN AND WON THIS YEAR. The weather was beautiful, company of all was great and I believe that all of our riders got great experiences out of competing there this year. Whilst all may not be happy with end results, I would hope that the challenges they took on should be considered as personal achievements. Some were happy that they got around the cross country without time penalties, others took on the experience of Grade Two, whilst others were excited to have a go in the indoor arena. You all represented our club extremely well! Thank you especially to Kate for organising our wonderful sites and stables, to Irene and Willy for bringing up a float full of equipment for a comfortable weekend. To Steve, Stuart, Willy and Tom for setting up and packing up our campsite. To Lauren and Irene again for taking on the cross country jump judging duties for our club on the Sunday, allowing our riders and parents to concentrate on horses and competing. I cannot wait to see the photos that Lauren and Tom took over the weekend at our presentation night later on in the year. Don t forget that this rally is a pink rally with a gold coin donation. Some come along in pink, both you and your horse, however remember that safety is the top priority for both of you, so covered shoulders, boots and helmets are a priority. Just a timely reminder on a couple of housekeeping matters. Firstly we just need to remind parents of our under 18 riders that they are to be at the pony club grounds on rally days. If your child is riding a 1

3 horse or attending non owners, you have the responsibility of being in attendance. It is an occupational health and safety matter and we are aware that we have had parents drop off their child and return later in the day. Secondly as our weather is becoming warmer we want everyone to be safe in relation in particular to the footwear that they are wearing. Runners whilst not totally appropriate are lowest standard of shoe acceptable. Please could parents and family members not wear sandals, thongs or any other type of open shoe. You and your child s safety is paramount. The weekend after our rally is our Competition day; please do not forget to enter via event secretary if you have not yet done so. The Junior Committee is also looking for your support as they are running a cake stall on that day. They will be providing you at this rally with a reminder to help supply goodies. The year is flying along so fast and it will soon be our Presentation Night. SO if you have not yet marked it in your calendar make sure that you put Saturday the 5th Dec as the night of nights. 6 DC report 5 SPRING IS IN THE AIR, the grass is growing and my ponies are getting fatter!! I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine (with sunscreen on of course!), being mindful of changing rugs as appropriate to the ever changing spring weather and keeping an eye on greedy ponies that have access to maybe a little too much grass. I m keeping a close eye on Archie (many of you might remember him the skinny chestnut pony with attitude!) who is so fat right now he s likely to burst! Time to bring him back into work I think. This month we have Sally Francis joining us. Sally has requested a jumping focus for her lessons, so in preparation for our competition the following weekend Sally will be putting riders through their paces over show jumps and helping you all refine your technique. Sarah will be focusing on dressage to help you polish things up ready for the comp and all coaches have been asked to discuss competition and warm-up ring etiquette with riders. Kate will focus on XC (yay ground drying up!) and Kristal is back with us this month too to focus on flat drills and games. In the afternoon I ll work with a couple of groups in Theory with a focus on analysing dressage tests and making the best use of the comments received. At competitions the warm-up ring is a source of anxiety for many riders as it can often become a little crowded and hectic. So please ensure that you are aware of the warm-up ring rules. If you re not sure about the rules ask your coaches at rally. If all riders adhere to the rules in the warm up then it will be a safer and more pleasant experience for everyone. At the rally I am going to run a pencilling and gear check session for parents in the morning. So if anyone is interested in learning more about what is involved in pencilling or gear check to enable them to help out at our comp, and at others in the future, please join in. It s really not scary! If you haven t already put your name down to help at the competition then please make sure you do. It s important to support our competitions

7 and show all our visitors how great Nunawading is at putting on a competition day. It is an important fund raiser for our club, without which fees would need to increase. So it s in your best interests to make it as successful as possible. Christmas is coming up soon, so that means a Christmas rally! In previous years that has included a mini gymkhana in the morning, complete with neatest on parade and rider classes, followed by handy mount and freshmans jumping, then ending with the fancy dress. If you have suggestions/requests of alternate activities for the Christmas rally please let me know this month. Planning will need to begin! Don t forget to dress in pink this rally..lots of it!! But please ensure that you are safe. Minimum requirements are an approved safety rated helmet, safe riding boots with a heel and smooth sole, shoulders covered with a sleeve, jodhpurs or long pants that do not flap around when riding, no jewellery (other than medi alert) and of course your medical arm band must be worn. While we want everyone to have fun dressing up in pink and making a donation, you will not be allowed to ride at rally if what you are wearing does not meet the safety requirements above or in some other way poses a safety risk. The safety of all our riders and their horses is our primary concern. See you Sunday! Marelle 6

9 INTERZONE HORSE TRIALS ON THE 13TH AND 14TH SEPTEMBER, I participated in the annual interzone horse trials held at the new PCAV Equestrian Centre in Gladysdale. Interzones are a teams event where you are put into teams of 4 with people from different clubs around your zone. Each zone in Vic will enter teams to aim to win the overall shield. I was placed into a team with a member from Mt Evelyn, Kangaroo Ground and Healsville pony clubs. Being in a team with different people is a great way to make some new friends that you will see out and about at different comps. Interzones was the first comp to be held at the new PCAV equestrian center and it was an amazing experience. I loved riding there. The cross country course was super and in time it will get better and become an incredible course to ride on. If you get the opportunity to ride there I would definitely take it! If you are a grade 3 or 4 rider I would recommend doing this comp because of how enjoyable it is and not only do you get to ride at a great venue but you also meet so many new people that share the same interest as you. 10 Junior Committee HI EVERYONE! Just a reminder that this rally is our pink rally to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. Remember to wear all pink clothing (no singlets!) and pink horse gear, but if you don t have any pink just wear bright colours! Also remember to bring a gold coin donation. All funds we make will be donated to the breast cancer fund. We will be running a cake stall selling treats for humans and horses and there will be an award presented at the end of the day for the most pink outfit. 11 THE WARM UP RING ALL TOO OFTEN warm up rings are a little too much like the hunger games. We re all thrown into one arena, trying to keep as far away from professionally trained Careers who will most likely kill you if you get in their sights. Someone you thought you knew might just cut you off or crash into you. So here are 9 rules that we all need to revise and remember, because I don t want to have to go all girl on fire on my fellow competitors. 1. If someone is going faster than you they have right of way. It s quite simple really; if they re going faster they will take longer to stop than someone who is going slower. So just remember, the fastest go on the outside track, if you re going slower try and stay on the inside track. 2. When jumping, keep the red flag on your right and white on your left. Chant to yourself, white on left, red on right, over and over again. Those are the written rules. At a recent show, the organising committee forgot to organise flags for the practice fences, needless to say things got a little hairy a few times. If there are no flags, either whatever side the ground rail is on you jump from that side or see what way everyone else is jumping the fence. 3. Left Shoulder to Left Shoulder! An often forgotten rule of arena riding, if someone is coming from the opposite direction, keep them on your left! Of course this rule only really applies if you are both going the same pace. Because you know, if you re the on going slower you should be on the inside track and other wise out of their way. 4. Don t get too close behind another horse apply the 3-second rule. Multiple reasons for this, the horse in front of you might not like you being close behind them, causing them to kick up which can make the rider fall off and/or kick your horse in the head. Keeping the driving 3-second rule so there is plenty of space between you! 5. If there is a red ribbon in a horses tail, keep your distance! We all learnt this in Pony Club, if there is a red ribbon I a horse s tail, KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! Obviously this horse is sensitive if they re using it; 10

12 11 they ve gone through the trouble of getting a ribbon and attaching it, so stay away. 6. If someone yells OXER! Or VERTICAL! Or CROSS RAIL! Check to see if you re in the way and if so I suggest you move quickly. Someone is coming into the practice fence and obviously somebody is in the way, so just make sure it isn t you! 7. Whoever is earlier than you in the draw has precedence. One of the unwritten laws of the jumping warm up is that someone earlier in the draw has the right to the practice fence, whether it s a bigger fence or wider oxer, they get to jump what they want, regardless of your needs. 8. When someone falls off or yells LOOSE HORSE, halt. For your own safety and the safety of others around you, if there is a horse galloping around, stop your horse and maybe even get off just to make sure that your horse doesn t overreact. Also if someone has fallen off you may need to get them some help. 9. LOOK WHERE YOU RE GOING!! I mean come on! I ve witnessed and been in so many crashes simply from people not looking! Keep your eyes up!
