STONEWALL FLANDERS ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL Stonewall Flanders Elementary School hosted a fun competition between teachers and administrators to celebrate the 100th day of school on

Next, the teachers and administrators became human bowling balls as they got on scooters and got pushed across the gym floor to knock down big bowling pins.

Ultimately, the competition ended in a tie! This year, the staff decided to do something different for the kiddos to have some fun, Manjarrez said.

2 STONEWALL FLANDERS ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL Stonewall Flanders Elementary School hosted a fun competition between teachers and administrators to celebrate the 100th day of school on Feb. 8. Cheers and excitement filled the school s gym as Stonewall Flanders Counselor Joseph Manjarrez introduced the two teams going head to head in the friendly competition: Principal Dr. Traci Smith s team Smith s Superstars and Academic Dean Kristy Suarez s Suarez s Smashers. The event kicked off with a hilarious relay where each team raced to change clothes and dress like a woman. The kids loved every minute of it and cheered for their favorite team. Next, the teachers and administrators became human bowling balls as they got on scooters and got pushed across the gym floor to knock down big bowling pins. The last challenge was an obstacle course that included flips, hula hoops and shooting a basketball. Loud cheers erupted every time a teacher and administrator scored. Ultimately, the competition ended in a tie! This year, the staff decided to do something different for the kiddos to have some fun, Manjarrez said. We let the kids come in and watch their teachers do some silly things, so they can release some stress and energy because they have been working so hard this year. Dr. Smith agreed and said, Allowing this small break in the routine is an easy decision when you see their faces at the event. The children really enjoyed it, they saw their teachers, paras and administrators in a different light. The staff who didn t participate also enjoyed it as they laughed and cheered along every challenge. What a wonderful idea. I had a great time. I haven t laughed that hard in such a long time. I wonder how many calories I burned, thank you for a nice afternoon here at SWF, Teacher Mary Acosta said. In honor of the 100th day, the school also participated in Olive Garden s national campaign Pasta for Pennies benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The school asked students to bring 100 pennies and collected a total of $160! The money raised through student contributions supports leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research and patient services. 3 Wild Things Zoofari visits HISD Pre-K 4 students All Harlandale ISD Pre-K 4 students received a surprise visit from Wild Things Zoofari earlier this month. The children were introduced to an adorable red kangaroo, a chinchilla, a keel-billed toucan and a red ruffed lemur. The students had the opportunity to pet all the animals while they learned interesting facts about them such as their behavior, habitat and what they like to eat. The best moment happened when the baby kangaroo began to hop around, causing the children to burst into laughter. Columbia Heights Pre-K teacher Jessica Cooper said the timing of the visit was perfect since they are currently learning about the jungle. We are now learning about the different ecosystems in the jungle and all kinds of animals, Cooper said. They got to see the animals up close and touch them, which is great because it makes everything more real for them, and they can make those connections with what they are learning in the classroom. Wild Things Zoofari s visit is the district s latest on-site field trip planned for Pre-K 4 students this year, which was made possible through the Pre-K 4 SA grant. p.3

4 COWBOY PRODUCTIONS STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE COMPETITION McCollum HS students in Cowboy Productions recently put their talents to the test at the SkillUSA regional competition held at Brackenridge High School and advanced to state! A team of four students participated in the Broadcast News Production contest and won first place. Two students served as the news anchor team, one student served as the team s director/technical director, and one student served as the floor director. Each team had to write and produce their rundown before assigned contest time. Students then produced and completed a three-minute newscast as if it were live. Teams were evaluated on their broadcast writing ability, voice quality, diction, timing and pacing and performance techniques. A team of two students participated in the television (video) production competition and won second place. The two contestants planned and shot a video on location to convey the theme of the event. Editing was done in the contest area with special emphasis on professional production of the video by industry standards, quality of audio and video, and adequate conveyance of the theme to the viewer. Congratulations to the Broadcast News Production team composed of Xavier Flores, Alexis Garcia, Elida Luna and Carlos Montantes and to the Video Production Team composed of Amaru Ruiz and Ceasar Molina! The state competition is slated for April in Corpus Christi, TX. p.4

The San Antonio Public Library, McNay Art Museum, BiblioTech and Girls Inc. were also in attendance to offer different activities. Harlandale Middle School teamed up with Communities in Schools to host a fun and interactive STEM Family Night on Feb. 7. More than 200 students and their families attended the event and participated in a variety of hands-on activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. HMS science teacher Tracy Cardenas was one of the teachers that helped create all the engaging STEM stations for the entire family to enjoy. Our STEM event is an excellent time for students to bring their families, brothers and sisters, and show them what they are learning in the classroom, Cardenas said. They really enjoy it, you can see their enthusiasm when they work together on all the activities. With more than 15 stations set up, students had the opportunity to create stop HISD GT/STEM facilitator Charles Hernandez added that the night is also a great way to promote STEM careers. It s important for students to experience STEM right now because it s never too early for them to start thinking about their future career, Hernandez said. STEM is the future, in terms of jobs, so they need to become aware of that. Once students visited at least eight stations they earned a free Kona Ice snow cone. p.5

6 BRAVE AND TIGER CHEER TEAMS WIN BIG AT NCA NATIONALS The Harlandale Middle Brave Cheer and Morrill Elementary Tiger Cheer traveled to Dallas to compete in the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Nationals on Jan The Morrill Tiger Cheer team, ranging from third to fifth grade students, won their third NCA National title in a row and received the Best Use of Tumbling award. We are very proud of them because both the athletes and their families have dedicated and worked extremely hard to earn such an award, Morrill Tiger and Brave Cheer Sponsor Delilah De La Rosa said. They are three-time NCA National Champions! Tiger Cheer Members are Kristian Espinoza, Jesanie Guerrero, Brianna Hernandez, Vyolette Partida, Kali Espinoza, Deven DeLuna, Giada Navaira, Isabella Aragon, Mia Crosby, Katelynn Espinoza and Miah Godoy. The HMS Brave Cheer team competed in the toughest division of the competition going against 24 teams from different states throughout the country. HMS placed third and also received the Best Use of Tumbling award. Brave Cheer Members who Overall, they were the highest competed were Chelsea Guillen, ranking Texas team in their division. HISD STUDENT ARTWORK FEATURED AT SAMA Students, parents and teachers enjoyed a day full of art, music and dance during the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) Harlandale Family Day held on Feb. 4.

7 HISD STUDENT ARTWORK FEATURED AT SAMA Students, parents and teachers enjoyed a day full of art, music and dance during the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) Harlandale Family Day held on Feb. 4. Families celebrated the rich diversity of cultures in the Americas through thoughtprovoking art activities reflecting the museum s Latin American, Asian- Pacific American and African American artworks. One of the exhibits, Enmascarados y Enmascaradas, featured the work of Columbia Heights Elementary School students, showcasing a total of 102 pieces. Our students created mixed media paintings and drawings on watercolor paper about two meaningful and relevant ideas, Columbia Heights art teacher Noe Garza said. We integrated their personal experiences in the barrio and the lucha libre mask, which is prevalent in our Mexican heritage and derives from the luchadores and luchadoras such as Mil Mascaras, El Blue Demon and El Santo. During the event, students and visitors had the opportunity to explore the museum halls and participate in a variety of hands-on activities, including painting, drawing, sculpting and collage-making. Families also experienced youth dance performances from India to celebrate Asian culture. Harlandale families toured the historic museum observing its engaging art, Garza added. Our children learned that art can be created in endless forms using unique tools and media. Garza thanked SAMA Education Coordinator Jessica Nelson and her staff for organizing this event. He hopes that families and students continue to visit SAMA in the future as he believes art is a major component of creative development. By observing the art, our children make cognitive connections which helps nurture their critical thinking. Observing higher art stimulates the brain in positive ways, Garza concluded. p.7

8 MCCOLLUM AUTOTECH STUDENTS ADVANCE TO STATE COMPETITION A total of eight McCollum High School Automotive and Technology students recently participated in the SkillsUSA Texas District 11 Leadership and Skills Conference. The students participated in the Job Exhibit competition and advanced to state. As part of the competition, there was a five person engine team that completely disassembled, cleaned, photographed, documented and reassembled an automotive engine. Once complete, the students put their engine on display with a progress binder. Three individual students entered their brake caliper in the Automotive Brake Component competition. They disassembled, cleaned, sand blasted, honed, photographed, documented and reassembled an automotive brake caliper assembly with new seals. Once complete, they put their caliper on display with a progress binder. The students had a great time and put a lot of effort in, McCollum Automotive Instructor Mark Emmons said. Their attitude and behavior was the best anyone would have asked for. The five person team is composed of Stephen Saenz, Devin Hernandez, Oscar Gonzales, Enrique Castillo III and Esteban Montoya. The three individual students are Fernando Ortiz, Jared Villarreal and Josh Rodriguez. Way to go, McCollum Cowboys! Good luck in the state competition! p.8
