1 R THE HERD Issue #1 Issue #8 Fox Tech High School, San Antonio, Texas February 19, 2016 Big Splash The Fox Tech swim team got off to a rough start on Friday at the Regional meet with several disqualifications. However, they finished very strong on Saturday. Isabella Dominquez qualified for the finals in the 200 freestyle and finished 16th overall. Isaiah Salazar qualified for the finals in both of his individual events the 100 free (16 th ) and the 200 (11 th ) IM. In his final races as a senior Isaiah set "personal bests" in both events. All six relay teams qualified for the finals. The girls relay team of Sharon Garcia, Makayla Rodriguez, Isabella Dominquez and Victoria Sandoval finished 12th in the region in the 200 medley and 15th in the 200 free relay. Unfortunately, the 400- Free relay team disqualified with an early start in the finals. 2 Raiders of the Lost Ark 25th Anniversay (Austin Martinez, Staff Reporter) The S.A. Symphony celebrates the return of one of the greatest movie heroes of all time Indiana Jones. The San Antonio Symphony will be playing John Wiilliams iconic motion picture soundtrack live as the audience watches the epic adventure, Raiders of the Lost Ark, on Friday and Saturday, February 19th -20th at the historic Majestic Theatre. Tangerine by Edward Bloor (Kendra Turpin, Literary Critic) The movie is about a dashing archeologist (Harrison Ford) battling the evil forces of the Nazi Army for the secrets of ancient religious artifacts. The movie is nonstop adventure with a huge mix of suspense and humor. Paul has recently moved from Texas to the small community of Tangerine County, Florida. He is an odd looking kid, especially since he wears especially large black glasses (bug eyes). Paul has to deal with the popularity and attention that his older brother Eric receives. The story is an evolution of Paul stepping out of his brother s shadow, standing up to bullies, and accepting new challenges which leads to selfconfidence. The community of Tangerine adds to the well told story, sinkholes appear constantly and lightning strikes at the same time every day. Author Edward Bloor succeeds in weaving a story that encourages readers to take chances and to be bold. Tangerine is an entertaining light-hearted read. 2

AM PROJECT ( Athena McCloud, Staff Reporter) The AM Project is a student outreach program focusing on artistic musical insight.

The AM instructors teach students various soundmixing skills, such as matching beats.

Students create a DJ name, a group name, and a label for their artistic piece. Students engage in many hands-on musical activities.

Upon completion, AM Projects will be on display for the student body to enjoy.

In order to participate in the program, students were required to submit an application.

3 AM PROJECT ( Athena McCloud, Staff Reporter) The AM Project is a student outreach program focusing on artistic musical insight. Participants are required to create a project which fuses an inspiring selection of literature with music. The AM instructors teach students various soundmixing skills, such as matching beats. Students create working groups with identified tasks with the goal of completing a finished product. Students create a DJ name, a group name, and a label for their artistic piece. Students engage in many hands-on musical activities. In addition, students are introduced to various music related technical devices and software programs. Upon completion, AM Projects will be on display for the student body to enjoy. These Buffaloes are acquiring technical skills while they are having fun a perfect combination for learning. In order to participate in the program, students were required to submit an application. The program takes place on campus once a week on Wednesday s during the AVID period. Valentines Dance (Lauren Reyna, Staff Reporter) Last Friday, Fox Tech hosted a Valentine s Day Dance. Students dressed up to the nines for the occasion. The event consisted of games, food, prizes, and great music. Students had blast taking it to the dance floor. Karaoke time was filled with laughter. My favorite moment was when Kendall Abney sang out a rendition of Adele s Hello. Everyone that attended had a great time. Congratulations to the Sophomore Class for sponsoring this amazing event. 3

Alexis Lightbourn was awarded $7500 for her future college education. In addition, Jasmine Taylor.received the Shining Star Energy Scholar Award for $20,000.

She was singled out for an excellent essay, academic success, and her involvement with mock trial and debate.

Valero Alamo Bowl Awards Big Scholarships The Valero Alamo Bowl awarded two generous scholarships to two of Fox Tech's finest on January 2nd. Alexis Lightbourn was awarded $7500 for her future college education. In addition, Jasmine Taylor.received the Shining Star Energy Scholar Award for $20,000. Jasmine was the only student in Bexar County to receive this prestigious award. She was singled out for an excellent essay, academic success, and her involvement with mock trial and debate. In addition to the one-time, non-renewable scholarship, recipients are annually invited with their parents to attend an awards luncheon and then to the Valero Alamo Bowl to be recognized on the field. Applicants must be ranked in the top 15% of their class or have an SAT of 1250 (math, critical reading) or ACT of 28 and reside in Bexar County. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, teacher recommendations, evaluation of the applicant s personal narrative and involvement in extra-curricular activities including awards and honors received. A strong preference is given to students participating in varsity sports. We could not be more proud of these two outstanding young ladies. Cheers to Alexis and Jasmine. 4

The breakfast tacos and sweet treats were amazing. Live entertainment was provided by our award-winning Mariachi. It was a great opportunity to come together and celebrate.
