1 Leopard Nation News Vol. 2 Issue 2 November 27, 2018 New Home Leopards Go to State! Elizabeth Dye, Staff Reporter On October 22 at Mae Simmons the boys and girls cross-country teams went to run at the regional meet. Both teams did amazing and their hard work paid off. The girls cross-country team (Juniors Jacey Cathy & Kyley Gill, Sophomore M Kenna McFadden, and Freshmen Selah Boynton, Leeya Garcia, Mckenzie Johnston, and Reagan Menuier) didn't advance to the state meet, but all made their best personal times for the season. The boys cross-country team (Seniors Carter Abney & Dylan Martinez, Junior Kaleb LeClair, & Freshmen Jordan Moore, Kadence Power & Sunny Torres) did amazing and advanced to state by coming in third as a team at regionals. The day came for the boys to head to Round Rock for the state meet. After a send off at the school where students from Pre-K through 12th grade lined the halls and cheered, the boys made the long trip south. They ran on Nov. 3, and even though the team didn't place, they all ran really well and had amazing times. Thus, the cross-country season comes to an end after an outstanding year, thanks to the coaches and runners. Leopard Nation is proud of you!

2 NHS Theatre Performs Comedy Play Bode Stewart, Staff Reporter On November 3, the theatre class performed The Red Velvet Cake War. The play was performed at the New Home Community Center. The play was about people who lived in Sweetgum, Texas. They all gathered at a family reunion. There was a ton of drama that was going on at the reunion. To settle all this drama, they had a competition to see who could make the best red velvet cake. The cast included Courtney Jackson, Jackson Bass, and Nicki Salvato. Bass acted as the character Uncle Aubrey. The main character, Gaynelle, was performed by Jackson. Salvato acted as LaMerle. There was about 80+ people in attendance of the play. It took about 45 minutes to watch the entire play. The cast and the crew did a great job as they performed The Red Velvet Cake War. Jackson Bass portrays Uncle Aubrey. The cast and crew of The Red Velvet Cake War Jackson Bass, Editor-in-Chief National Honor Society Induction The National Honor Society Induction for New Home ISD took place on Wednesday, Oct. 17. New Home has successfully added 15 new members to the NHS, and a wide range is taken up by the junior class. The new NHS members from the junior class include Ashlyn Ballard, Jacey Cathey, Effi Correa, Danielle Fonseca, Kyley Gill, Kerrigan Grantham, Alice Hamilton, Courtney Jackson, Kaleb LeClair, Kamryn Lucas, Taylor Smith, and Riley Stokes. There were also a few seniors new to the NHS, including Jett Ballard, Savanna Lehman, and Hayden Smith. New Home is proud of this year s NHS inductees.

3 EPIC Comes to New Home Trevor Melton, Staff Reporter On Friday, Oct 26 a group called Epic came in and talked to our school about drugs and alcohol. First he started off by telling the students who they were and where they came from. Then they played Bumper Balls with two volunteers each and played two games. After that he got into talking about how he was a professional mascot and stuntman. He had travelled around America doing stunts and tricks when he broke his ankle doing a trick, but he was healed and kept doing what he loves. The next thing they did was play a toilet paper game. Then they started getting serious again. He talked about some of his childhood and that he had this friend that moved away. The friend ended up getting involved with bad people and surrounding himself with drugs and alcohol. He said his friend finally caved in with all these bad influences and killed himself. The next thing they did was a four-way tug of war. They did one game of girls and one game of boys. The last thing they did was Coach Shae and Coach Wall playing the Bumper Balls and they did a two out of three battle. After three rounds Coach Wall came home with the win. Junior Kyley Gill and Senior Leea Walden take their places for a battle of Bumper Balls. Gill and Walden take off toward each other in Round 1. Both girls ended up on the floor, resulting in a draw for Round 1.

4 New Home Finishes 11-Man District Football Season Paycos Noble, Staff Reporter The New Home football team has entered the district season facing Tahoka with a loss of If this continues, they will not have a great district. The New Home football team beat Lockney high school by a score of This could be a turning point for the Leopards as morale is now high. New Home lost to Crosbyton on Oct. 26 with a heartbreaking score of On Nov. 2, New Home took on the Smyer Bobcats. The Leopards were winning in the first quarter with a score of 12-0, but then Smyer turned it around on them resulting in a final score of The Leopards ended the season by facing the Jackrabbits from Ralls. They were shut out by Ralls 49-0, and the Leopards challenging 11-man season came to a close. Elementary Activities Caleb Riojas, Staff Reporter On October 17, 2018 the New Home Elementary took a field trip to Ag in The Bag at Texas Tech. The students participated in many different stations. Stations consisted of students learning how a cow is milk, how rain is absorbed in the ground and a fun experiment with dry ice. The next day on October 18, 2018 they had a fire drill. On October 23, 2018 the students had a shower for Mrs. Dickens. On October 24, 2018 the Pre-K through Sixth grade students went to the health fair held in the activity gym. The health fair had booths all over the gym such as Catholic Charities, Double T Smiles and Walmart Vision Center. On October 25, 2018 Pre-K took a field trip to United Supermarkets. Then on October 31, 2018 the Pre-K took a trip to the Corn Maze for Halloween.

5 Leopards of the Month In each issue, individuals from New Home School are highlighted. Kaleb LeClair, a junior, has attended New Home for five years. LeClair loves the teachers at New Home, and his favorite class is Math because he likes to solve problems. Outside of school he enjoys drawing, running and going to the lake. His favorite memory of New Home is the state golf tournament in the spring of LeClair says if he were a food he would be an Oreo, because they are sweet and they complement milk well. After graduating, he plans to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio to earn a degree in accounting. Kash Starkey & Ryan Weeks, Staff Reporters Carley Smith is in the 8 th grade at New Home and has gone to New Home for 10 years. Smith s favorite thing to do outside of school is play basketball. Smith s favorite class at New Home is history because [Coach Wall] is a good teacher, she says. Smith s favorite thing about New Home is all of her friends because they are nice. Smith s favorite memory about New Home is all the good teachers she has had. After she graduates high school, Smith wants to attend college but has no specific plans at the moment. If she were a food, she would be a taco because they are good.

6 Meet the Leopard Nation News Staff Caul Erwin & Juliana Portales, Staff Reporters Elizabeth Dye is in the 10th grade and has been attending New Home for six years. This is her first year on the newspaper staff. Her favorite class is English with Coach Boynton. Outside of school, she participates in FFA, cross country, track, student council, and FCA. Her favorite season is fall because of the weather and the vibe fall puts off. Her favorite movie is Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. If she were a food, she would be steak because it is delicious. Her dream pet is a Capuchin Monkey, and her favorite color is teal. Jackson Bass, a New Home High School student in the 10th grade, has been attending New Home for six years. Bass s goal in life is to be famous one day, perhaps doing track, his all-time favorite sport. Bass loves playing camp games like hide and seek, tag and gaga ball. Bass loves comedy and action books and movies. Bass s favorite subject is theatre, but he feels that business is the most needed class in school to take.

7 Leopard Nation News Staff Trevor Melton has been going to New Home for seven years, and has been living at New Home for one year. He is a sophomore at New Home High School, and is in love with the school. If Melton were a food he would be a baby back rib, because they are a very saucy meat and I m a saucy person. His favorite extracurricular sport is baseball because it s a fun sport to play. When asked what his favorite holiday was he said, Christmas because I get a lot of presents. Melton s dream pet is [a] shark because they are the coolest fish in the sea. Bode Stewart is a sophomore at New Home ISD. He has been attending New Home for 11 years, and this is his first year in journalism. Stewart participates in FCA at NHS, as well as several sports football, basketball, baseball, and track. Outside of school, he enjoys camping & hunting, If he were a food, he would be Chick-fil-A because it tastes so good.
