We have much to celebrate this month. Our Boys Basketball Team winning the championship, the debut of the VCS sponsored Quetzalcoatlus, the largest flying dinosaur at the Zoo, and the announcement of Viera Charter School being placed on the 2017 School of Excellence list by Governor Rick Scott. Keep up the Great Work Panthers! This newsletter is packed full of the wonderful accomplishments of our students and the awesome field studies that they have recently attended. It is exciting for me to see all the great things your children are doing. Admin Assistant: Mrs. Lynch Most sincerely, Dr. Julie Cady Dr. Cady celebrates School Choice Week.

2 Spelling Bee Makes VCS History The annual VCS Spelling Bee usually takes place in the morning and the winner is picked before lunch. This year, the students were so sharp and so studied that the contest ran into the afternoon and had to be reconvened the next day. We ve never seen anything like this, Principal Dr. Cady said. We are seeing a very high caliber of talent and effort, and I would not at all be surprised to see us go far as the Spelling Bee moves on to regional and beyond. Judges were Mrs. Sreenagesh and Mrs. Shirley, left, and the announcer was Mr. Law. Winners Neil Ghosh (first place), Brianna Nguyen (second ), left, and Emily Magdi (third) are commended by Dr. Cady. First place winner Jan. 19 was Neil Ghosh, sixth grade; Second place and runner up/ alternate was Brianna Nguyen, seventh grade; and third place was Emily Magdi, sixth grade. VCS Dino Soars Parents and students showed up to support the VCS-sponsored flying Quetzalcoatlus dinosaur and its babies the weekend of Jan.6. Mrs. Gaffey was named VCS Employee of the Month for February. The honor is said to be well deserved. She is one of those employees who turned out to be an absolute treasure, VCS Principal Dr. Cady said. She is indispensable, doing so much for so many. On any given day you could find her filling in for a sick teacher, doing morning and/or afternoon car duty, tutoring students afterschool and on Saturdays, working one-on-one or in small groups to boost writing skills, and supporting our activity wheel. She sponsors our Writing Club, does our monthly newsletter, and writes many fine articles about our school for our local newspapers. Way to go! The Write Stuff

3 Student of the Month The Student of the Month for February is Jileana Coreano-Rodriguez, exhibiting the character trait of Caring. Jileana openly shows that her peers and teachers feelings count, according to the nomination from her three teachers. When new students come to VCS, she is very welcoming and makes them feel part of the school and helps them adjust well to the new school setting. She also ensures that they have a friend at recess and has done so each day. She is kind to everyone. Great job, Jileana! Kindergarten/First Grade Valentine s Day just may be the biggest holiday of the year for in-school celebrations. Kindergarten and first grade does it biggest, but parties and Valentine exchanges take place through elementary and a bit beyond. Mrs. Gutierrez Schoolwide Pep Rally Kicks Off Literacy Week Literacy Week and School Choice Week kicked off Jan. 22 with a schoolwide pep rally. Students worked on projects to celebrate their favorite authors.

4 Sixth-graders Launch Book Club The brand new Sixth Grade Book Club debuted Jan. 21 via a Facebook chat with author Christina Diaz Gonzalez. Members read and discuss works from the Sunshine State Book List and can chat with clubs from other schools. Mrs. Renfro, top rear, organized both events. Taryn Souders, author of How to (Almost) Ruin Your Summer and Dead Possums are Fair Game visited Viera Charter School all day Feb. 6 to teach writing tips to students throughout the school. Mrs. Oxley led the project and the field study trip. In preparation for a visit to the state Capitol, seventh-graders spent time studying the process underway to update the Florida Constitution. They created a bulletin board to share the information with students passing by in the upstairs middle school hallway. Mrs. Oxley Seventh Grade Treks to Tallahassee Seventy students in seventh grade took an overnight trip to Tallahassee Feb. 7 and 8 for a field study of how state government works, visiting both the old and new state government buildings. They took a breather in nature the next day, enjoying close-up views of manatees, dolphins and other wildlife.

5 PTSO: Improving Outdoor Spaces Viera Charter School is offering engraved bricks that can be personalized by students and their families. Bricks will be installed around the planters in the courtyard for all to enjoy. Funds raised will be used to improve the outdoor spaces at VCS. To learn more about the options, the VCS Goals, or to place an order, please visit: fundraisingbrick.com/vieracharter or contact Mr. Armstrong at Have you seen these new water fountains/bottle refilling stations? These were purchased using funds raised during our Boosterthon Fundraiser! Thank you for your continued support of all things PTSO; it s because of you that we are able to continually enhance the learning environment for our students! Attend our next PTSO Meeting to hear more about our overall plans to improve the outdoor spaces at VCS. Meeting schedule can be found at Important Upcoming Events Monday, Feb. 19 Tuesday, Feb. 20 Saturday, March 10, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15 Friday, March 16 Tuesday, March 27 - Presidents Day, No school for students Teacher in-service training - Dress Down Day Theme: Your favorite time in history - Boys Night Out - Dress Down Day Theme: Wear green for St. Paddy s - No school; Teacher Planning Day - Dress Down Day Theme: Wear your favorite college/university gear

6 VCS middle school boys are repeat SCCAA basketball champs Principal Dr. Julie Cady, left, and assistant principals Dr. Lynn Spadaccini and Tom Armstrong, Athletic Director, right, congratulate coach Greg Doherty and the middle school boys basketball team on their repeat conference win. VCS middle school boys took home the title in basketball Jan. 20 in a stunning season reversal. The Space Coast Christian Athletic Association (SCCAA) championship win is their second in row. Just two months ago, powerhouse Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy had the Panthers down by 30 points in regular season play and scored one other win. Jan. 20 s foe, Royal Palm Academy in Palm Bay, likewise racked up a season win. However, those last two opponents fell to VCS during tournament play. It was an exciting game to watch, even down to the last minute, Principal Dr. Julie Cady said of the championship game. The defeat of HTEA came the day before, securing the division title, before moving on to the conference win, both held at neutral campus sites. VCS Assistant Principal and Athletics Director Tom Armstrong added, They played hard and won when it mattered most. He credited the coaching skills of the team s faculty leader, VCS fifthgrade teacher Greg Doherty, for the success. It was great seeing him pull the boys together as a team during the season, Mr. Armstrong said. Mr. Doherty at 6 feet 7 inches tall played college basketball through sophomore year. He said based on his experience and from a coach s eye view, there is talent on the team that could lead to scholarships and even pro play. My dad was a high school coach in Oregon for 50 years, so it s in my blood, Mr. Doherty said. While eighth-grader Noland Loeak s choice of high school will be based on academic criteria either Rockledge or Viera said he ll definitely stick with basketball after working with Mr. Doherty. I definitely think Coach Doherty inspired us to work hard and be competitive, Noland said. Triple-sport enthusiast Alex Sosa a world champion in youth baseball who also plays football said he experienced great excitement this season. It was a lot of fun to come from behind and turn it around, he added. Carl Kotala featured the team on VieraVoice.com. VCS middle school boys basketball: 2 James Boyd, 7 th grade, Guard 3 Kevin Garcilazo, 7 th grade, Forward 10 Rossi Newman, 7 th grade, Guard 12 Chris Hoffman, 8 th grade, Guard 14 Ryan Lewis, 7 th grade, Guard 15 Anthony Lorenzo, 8 th grade, Guard 22 Noland Loeak, 8 th grade, Forward 23 Alex Sosa, 7 th grade, Guard 31 John Oldac, 8 th grade, Forward 34 Wyett Almonte, 8 th grade, Center 50 Nick Motty, 8 th grade, Center

7 Fifth-grader Plays Carnegie Hall It is the typical classical musician s dream to play Carnegie Hall in his or her lifetime. Knock that off fifth-grader Enping Zhang s dream list; she did so in December as the third-place winner of the American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music 2017, Young Musicians Category. Mom Yan Geng and dad Ju Zhang commended her daily practice, led by music teacher Ann Rosen. The sentiments of VCS Principal Julie Cady and Enping s teaching team were summed up by Enping s language arts teacher, Mrs. Kountz: That is so awesome! We are so proud of her! She is the sweetest and most deserving. Way to go, Enping! Enping Zhang, receiving congratulations from Dr. Cady, above, performed flawlessly in Carnegie Hall s Weill Recital Hall in December. Painting With a Twist Project Sends Gifts & Talent Home All fourth-graders had the opportunity to create a painting of a sea turtle to give as a holiday gift to a loved one, guided by artist and teacher Dove Roslan of Viera. Fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Allarding made the arrangements, which were enhanced because Mrs. Roslan works with Very Special Arts, which serves more than 1,000 children in local public schools with learning challenges, and she is in training to become a certified Art Therapist. Last year, Ms. Roslan hosted a VCS fund-raiser in which all students had the opportunity to paint the VCS mascot panther. It s my pleasure to give back, because VCS is a great school, Ms. Roslan said. In working with students, we discover that we experience art as therapy not only in viewing it, but also in creating it. Artist Dove Roslan led the art project.
