1 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE JANUARY 2016 The beginning of 2016 is always a great time to reflect on the things that went well and set some goals for ourselves this year. This past year we witnessed outstanding work of new volunteers. It is incredible to see the motivation of those that truly want to make a difference. We also tapped into the talents, creativeness and thinkers of our membership. With the genesis of our motto Culture, Community, Family, with the creation of the new fundraising ideas- recipe books, calendars, clothing items, and with new business partnerships for fundraising, we realize how these ideas start small and grow into something successful. This past month alone we had two outstanding events: the Applebee s breakfast and the Christmas party. Make sure you read the recap articles in this newsletter to reminisce or catch up on what you missed during those events. During Applebee s, Chris and I were able to reach out to the membership and hear some great ideas while serving up pancakes! It was definitely worth the 6:00am drive out from New Jersey. In 2016 we will make a better effort to reach out to our CCLI Family and hear your ideas. Again, there is no idea too small. With the Lunar New Year around the corner we are anticipating all the exciting activities in the coming months. We also wish to encourage new volunteers to participate in these activities, and to get their new views. We hope everyone had a joyful holiday season and a Happy New Year! Our health care system is not designed around you! Patient Centered Care requires that you take control of your health care and this requires some effort on your part. At North Shore Long Island Jewish he continued hls training as an Intern and a Resident. A former board of director and physician for 35 years at the Queens Long Island Medical Group. Senior Club Meeting Wednesdays, Jan. 13th and Jan. 27th (10:30am - 2:30pm) Wednesdays, Feb. 10th and Feb. 24th (10:30am - 2:30pm) Dorothy Lee celebrated her birthday during our December 2nd senior meeting. Her daughter, Cynthia baked a nice cake in celebration. Elaine Chu celebrated her birthday at the December 16 th senior meeting. Happy Birthday, Dorothy and Elaine! We celebrated Christmas at our December 16th meeting with lots of food provided by our seniors. Our seniors played our traditional Christmas game of Finding the Item first in your bag with prizes provided to our winners by the Center. Warren Chew and Ted Ho played guitar as our seniors sang Christmas carols. Of course, our devoted MJ players continued playing their games throughout the morning and afternoon hours, stopping for a lunch break in between. Don t forget - at our next meeting on January 13th, special speaker, Howard Chung, will be talking about Taking Control of Your Healthcare, a very important topic. He will provide tips on what you can do to manage your medical needs through this complicated healthcare system. 3 HOLIDAY MARATHON MAH JONG PARTY ENJOYED BY ALL! Giving back to our members is a Center tradition and Wednesday, December 30 was no exception! Invited to play from 10 AM to 10 PM at the Center, over 80 members showed up to play MJ, socialize and to enjoy a catered lunch and dinner courtesy of the Center s Senior Club. Thank you members for your additional, generous and delicious food contributions! Over eleven tables of MJ were in action at all times. Most MJ players played about 10 hours! They almost never left their tables and two tables played past 10 PM! At the same time, karaoke was in full swing, the beading ladies were beading, and the rest socialized to their hearts content. Members brought their parents to enjoy the event as well. Every inch of the Center s space was used to maximum capacity! The Center was packed! Huge thanks to all our fantastic members of all ages who helped out throughout the entire event, before, during and after. Everyone set up and put away everything that was needed. There was a continuous consumption of food all day and night long! Perhaps this event will become another amazing Center tradition! Our volunteers are priceless! Kudos to Betty Leong, Helen Chin and Mona Ng for organizing the event, Danny Ng for helping out the karaoke singing stars, Pat Leung for supporting the beading ladies, Bob Wong, our official photographer and of course to all of our extraordinary members who are always so wonderful! 4 APPLEBEE S FUNDRAISER BREAKFAST ON DEC. 13, 2015 On a beautiful spring-like day in the middle of December, CCLI held its second annual Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee's in New Hyde Park. Close to 200 people, current members and their extended family and friends, attended the event. A hearty breakfast that included tasty pancakes, sausages and eggs was served up by CCLI volunteers that included our current co-presidents. All the while, pictures and videos of past CCLI events from 2015 were on display for all the guests to see. Then all the children in attendance were treated to a special surprise when Santa came to visit Applebee's and gave presents to all the children. After Santa's visit, Stephen Reckie from Real World Experts gave a short presentation on how his company can help college students with career preparation and coaching services to land internships and full-time jobs. The fundraiser event had something for everyone. Singing Christmas carols, winning raffle baskets and 50/50 also added to the fun and excitement of the event. MAKING MERRY AT THE CENTER! The Center s holiday party held on Friday, December 11 was an evening of great attendance, entertainment, fun and dessert!

Special guest singer Cornell Chan, Hong Kong s Elvis Presley entertained us well.

Our in house guitar player Warren Chew not only played and sang for us but he also ran an amazing karaoke holiday singalong.

The gift-wrapping contest was a blast! Three children enjoyed being wrapped in gift paper by members of their families.

The five-dollar grab bag gift table was a popular part of the evening and sure to be repeated next year.

Everyone loved sampling the Center s Viennese Table of desserts donated by our generous members!

Many thanks to everyone for coming and helping to make this evening one of our most enjoyable events of the year! Make sure you attend next year! Don t miss out!

Our CCLI family, new members and guests were warmly greeted. Mona Ng ran the 100 Club. Special guest singer Cornell Chan, Hong Kong s Elvis Presley entertained us well. Talented teen guest pianist played a lovely lyrical composition of Chinese music. Our in house guitar player Warren Chew not only played and sang for us but he also ran an amazing karaoke holiday singalong. Mona Ng, our party planner ran her famous scavenger hunt for adults and the children with almost everyone in the room winning a prize. The gift-wrapping contest was a blast! Three children enjoyed being wrapped in gift paper by members of their families. Since they were all so cute, all three children won prizes.
