1 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE JANUARY 2014 Happy New Year! We begin 2014 with a big snowstorm and freezing temperatures. May the rest of 2014 be warm, prosperous, healthy and peaceful. On January 31 we celebrate the Year of the Horse for the Lunar calendar. The spirit of the horse is recognized to be a year of constant efforts to improve. People born in the Year of the Horse are known to be energetic, bright, warm-hearted, intelligent and able. They are great at communicating and enjoy being in the limelight. Some famous people born in the year of the Horse are Barbara Streisand, Oprah Winfrey, John Travolta and Teddy Roosevelt. The Center is always looking to improve. If you have any suggestions, new ideas or programs, please be sure to let us know will be a year the Center is looking to improve not only our programs for our members but to also do some interior renovations. We will be focusing on grantwriting to bring in needed funds for our renovations. But we must also focus on our annual fundraisers - journal ads in our annual souvenir journal and our annual banquet to bring in some of the needed funds. The journal committee is busy putting together our annual souvenir journal that is distributed at the banquet. Please support the Center by putting in a family advertisement / greeting or ask your neighborhood merchants to place an advertisement in our annual journal. It s a great way for the businesses that you patronize to reach a wide audience. The deadline is January 31st. The funds from the journal help support the important programs of the center and building renovations for the Center. If you have some time to volunteer, be part of the committee and learn the process of putting together a beautiful journal. If you have not reserved your seats at the annual banquet on Saturday, March 1st, be sure to do it soon. It s a night of good food, great dancing and fun entertainment. Don t miss it!! It s a great way to spend time with your family and friends. It would be great if you can bring a table of ten people in! 8 ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY ON DEC.13, 2013 Winners of the potato chip race game rejoice with their prizes. Contestants race to be declared the winner in the game of Show me that you have this article on you. Friday the Thirteenth is usually considered an unlucky day by some, but for our Holiday Party attendees it turned out to be a very lucky day. Welcome to some of the new families who came to the Center s party. Everyone brought desserts to the party so there was definitely no dieting that night! As you can see from the pictures, the parents and children had a great time with the potato chip race game. It was such a fun game that we played it a number of times. Afterwards we had Guess that Christmas tune and our classic Who has this item in their bag or pocket? The competitiveness of the participants was unbelievable. Everybody ended up with prizes at the end of the evening and left the party feeling full and happy! Mona Ng The adults demonstrate their skills at the potato chip race game. The youngsters show the adults how to really play the potato chip race game. RAFFLE PRIZE DONATIONS Cleaning your house? Do you have some unwanted gifts you no longer want? Do you know of some stores you frequent who would gladly give the Center a free manicure, free stay at a hotel, oil change, gift certificate, or free services? The Center would gladly accept any unused and new items for their annual Banquet raffle baskets. We would be grateful for any assistance from the Center's members in soliciting items from neighborhood stores and merchants. You can drop the items off at the Center on Sundays. Be sure to include your name, address and phone number so we may send you an acknowledgement of your donation. If you have any questions, please contact Shirley Shing or Mona Ng at the Center on Sundays. Shirley Shing and Mona Ng, Banquet Raffle Committee 100 CLUB DECEMBER DRAWING The December 100 Club Drawing was held on December 13 during the Center's Annual Christmas/Holiday Party. The winners are: $10 winners - # 49 Jones Wong # 28 Donna Chan # 84 Shau Cheung # 19 Alyssa Fong # 14 Kathy Louie # 71 Helen Chin $20 winner - # 97 Ken Erlickman $30 winner - # 16 Joan Rasco $40 winner - # 33 Jack Yup Congratulations to all our winners! 9 SCHOOL HOLIDAY PARTY ON DEC. 22, 2013 Oh what fun it was!! It was a jam-packed holiday party. Our youngest dance class put on a delightful fish dance for their audience. The girls were adorable in their little orange costumes and our little boy in his Nemo costume. Then our first ever Hip-Hop dance class put on their Hip-Hop number for all to see. Thank you to our teacher, Alanna Chan, for choreographing these routines and training the children. They did a fantastic job! Next up was the food. The Center supplied the sandwiches and drinks and the parents brought in numerous dishes for us to try. There was sooo much food. After our tummies were full we heard the sleigh bell ring! Santa was coming! The kids gathered round waiting to see Santa. And there he was! White beard and all! Everyone waited eagerly for Santa to call their name to get their presents and have a chance to take a picture with Santa. Once everyone received their presents we said goodbye to Santa until next year. Next up was a free raffle. We raffled off large umbrellas to three lucky winners in the audience. Last but not least our audience favorite - game time! We had our parents and the kids do the potato chip race. The goal of the game was to move the potato chip down from their forehead to their mouth using only their head and facial features to do it. Our determined participants were competitive! The ones who lost asked to play the game again and again so they could have a chance at winning. Next up was our How well do you know each other? game. Originally it was to 5 sets of parents and children playing. We had to double the number to 10 because of its popularity. With questions such as What does your mom and dad like to do when they re relaxing? or What is child s favorite food? we saw which parents and kids really knew each other well. The last game of the party was our old favorite - Who has the item first? As I called out typical items in their possession, our audience members went crazy trying to outrun themselves to get to me first. At times, we had 4 kids in front of me telling me they got there first. Everyone had a blast! You know it s a successful party when the kids don t want to leave. Thank you to everyone for helping to coordinate this party. A special shoutout goes to Jim Vogel for playing his all important role for the kids this year!! Mona Ng 9
