By Deanna Hatcher Country Lovers POOL Party - Sat. Sept 30 By Alice Ferguson Our annual pool party at Don and Kay s home in Camarillo is on the horizon. According to Betty if you want a relaxing day under the sunshine you ve got to put this on your calendar! The setting is simply beautiful with lots of shade to laze under while socializing with dozens of your fellow country dancers. It is a great way to get to know each other. Don loves his guitar and entertains everyone with a selection of over 100 songs. He encourages anyone that has an instrument to bring it along to do some jamming, entertaining, or just sing-a-long if you know the song s lyrics. There is recorded music if you wish to get up and dance, but it is not orchestrated, this is a time for Marshall and Teresa to join in the relaxing and socializing too. The beautiful pool and Jacuzzi are available for you to ease those tight muscles, sooth your soul, or enjoy your inner child..so let s all get Wet and Wild. Last but not least there is the food what wonders we can discover in an open potluck.new tastes, new recipes, and new presentations. There are no restrictions, so use your imaginations from fruit to veggies, salads of any kind, beans to casseroles; we want to try them all! And please do not forget those wonderful deserts. This time you will be responsible to cook the meat you bring, being chicken, steak, fish, hamburger or hot dogs the choice is yours. Hope to see you all there! I just wanted to remind everyone that I am still taking plastic bottles and aluminum cans to raise money for Toys for Tots this Christmas. I bring the small recycle trash can and put it next to the ice chest every Tuesday. Please do not put trash in it. Although the coffee creamers and napkins are recyclable I do not get anything for them at the recycling center and have to pick through it when I get home. YUCK! They also do not take milk cartons or most family size juice bottles. Last year the club donated $600 to Toys for Tots. If you drink a lot of bottled water or soda at home or work save the containers and bring them to me Tuesday nights. Every little bit helps. To ensure the plastic bottles are not full of water making them heavier the recycling centers require that the lid be removed. I will take them anyway I can get them, but if you think about it, don t put the lid back on when you are done. From 2 7 pm Bring: Something to BBQ A Dish to share Swimsuits/towels Dancing shoes! We supply: Utensils Wine white & red Soft drinks Beer WHERE? Don & Kay s home 1955 La Ramada Camarillo Get flyer for directions or call the Hotline.

2 SEPTEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER Honky Tonking... By Alice Ferguson A group of us country dancers have decided to do a night out on the town to check out all these hot spots once a month and ask you all to join us. We can make arrangements to car-pool for those that are too shy or don t like to drive at night, so give us a heads up by e- mailing the Editor, or myself (Alice). Our first night out is on Sat Oct. 7th to check out Logsdon s Restaurant & Lounge at the Santa Paula Airport. (824 East Santa Maria St). Dance on a 24 dance floor to good ole country music by the Steve Hill, a one man band. Hitch up your get-a-long, take the reins and get ready to strut your stuff to live country music. Now mind you there is some yummy eating going on from Steak to Seafood starting at $8.95 a plate, so if you want, call ahead and make a reservation for dinner too. The number is Caught Red Handed will be playing at The Wharf, Saturday, Sept 23 rd for a Customer Appreciation Weekend with give a- ways, raffles, and foodstuffs galore Front Street, Ventura. Also on September 15 th they are starring at J.R. s Cowboy Palace (see calendar for info) starting at 9pm. Franky s Place.we ve been hearing about Joe Smith, the proprietor, starting up live band country dancing on Thursday nights right here in Ventura. Well let me tell you it s true. Last Thursday he was ¾ full of fun folks like yourselves having a good ole two-stepping time. He has scheduled another Country Mixer on the 14 th of Sept. with Deborah Neal & her 5 star band. Cover Charge in advance is $5, or pay at the door for $7. The band starts at 8pm at 456 E. Main Street, Ventura, just a couple of doors down from the Busy Bee Café. Plus an excellent full dinner menu! Jackie Popp: Lady of the Dance(2nd from right) By Terry Nash I have spent my life dancing, says Jackie who is 87 years young. She had her first lessons at age six and was a professional dancer throughout childhood and during her twenties in Chicago. She returned in earnest to her love of the dance about ten years ago and enjoys both Scottish and Country/ Western, attending lessons and dances several mornings and evenings each week. Jackie s career began in Vaudeville at the North Shore Theater in Chicago as a child where she danced four to five shows a day during the school holiday Christmas shows. At fifteen she was on the road and dancing in theaters all over the country. After High School, glamorous night clubs and famous chorus lines captured her. Jackie s beauty and talent shows brightly in the above publicity photo along with her partner entertainers. She was a performer at the 5100 Club in Chicago in conjunction with a young, dapper presenter named Amos Jacobs who soon became known to the rest of us as Danny Thomas. Here she met the handsome, talented Walter Popp, conductor and accompanist, who was to become her husband. After an exciting four-year courtship, they married on Danny Thomas birthday and continued traveling with the famous entertainer. Jackie recalls holding sixteen- month-old Marlo Thomas and dancing with her around the room. She eventually retired from professional performance to raise her children and after a 35-year career with Danny Thomas, the couple retired in Ventura. Jackie says another highlight of her life was helping to fundraise for her husband s and Thomas s dedication to St. Judes Children s Research Hos- (con t on page 5) Fair Parade 2006 By Carol Rogers Well, we did it again.first place in the adult group category! It was a beautiful day and we all had a blast. We decorated the float with our striking painting of the American bald eagle along with our other creation, the American flag, 6ft by 10ft majestically floating off the back of the truck. Brian and Jeanne were at the front with a flaming hot Weber grill. Brian was decked out with an apron and black cowboy hat. You can t get more Heart of the Country than that. Deanna Hatcher did a great job of creating the banner for the side of the float. It read: Country Music the Heart of the Country. 2 Not many Country Lovers showed up to help or ride the float, so we resorted to accosting people as they walked by and asked them to ride our float with us. We had some takers and they seemed to really enjoy it. Jesse Wilson, Deanna Hatcher, Mike Stark & Judy Fisher danced on the parade route and handed out Country Lover fans as the float slowly moved along. Marshall & Teresa spun the tunes as usual and we had the crowd clapping and singing along with us. We also tried to bribe the judges by giving them each one of our fans. (Maybe it worked)! Thanks to George, Beverly, Mitchell & Mary for riding the float. We had many spectators as we danced before the parade got started and we handed out some business card One of my favorite parts of the parade is the ride back down Thompson Blvd. This is when we crank up the music and wave to anyone and everyone. People really get a kick out of watching us and we get a kick out of watching them. Thanks again to ev ryone who supported and/or worked on the float.

They saw this vital and extensive project as a way to give back. Other memorable volunteering included entertaining troops during the war years at USO events. Jackie currently enjoys spending time with her daughter and son s families and being grandmother to her three grandchildren. She visits extended family and lots of happy memories on annual trips to Chicago. She started tap dancing again while taking classes at Ventura College, then moved onto English folk and one of her great favorites, Scottish dancing. She learned Country/Western after attending Sue Ellen s classes with friends and found more friends and fun when deciding to join Country Lover s. Jackie s advice to Country Lover s is to keep dancing - it will keep the blood circulating and the mind going. We are in the right group, she proudly proclaims, keep moving and good health will follow. And Jackie, we would all agree, you are the living proof! 5 A Sneak Preview of New Year s Eve Event WHERE: Sheraton 4 Points WHEN: December 31, 2006 from 6:00 pm to 1:00 am THE HAPPENINGS: Greetings with Cocktails and sodas at no host bar starting at six-thirty. 6 Country Lovers Elections By Deanna Hatcher Nominating Committee Chairperson Hi Country Lovers, It feels so good to be able to say hello to all of you. It is time once again to start thinking about club elections. The nominating committee made up of Deanna Hatcher, Jeanne Clayton, and Sue Ellen Colp have been working on finding nominees for your 2007 Country Lovers Western Dance Club Board of Directors. We are still looking for volunteers to run for all positions, but the following is what we have thus far: President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Director Carol Rogers Angela Lowery Dennis Culver Teresa Throneberry Jesse Wilson If you would like more information about any of these positions or would like to run for an office please contact one of the three members of the nominating committee. We need to find a secretary and at least one more director. History Nugget-Don t Fence Me In From Barbara Evans Robert H. Fletcher ( ), researched and wrote the text for many of the original historical highway markers that were erected in Montana in the 1930s. He also wrote Montana Historical Markers, 1938 and Free Grass to Fences: The Montana Cattle Range Story, However, as a cowboy poet, we know him best as the author of the lyrics to Don t Fence Me In which were set to music by Cole Porter in Often recorded using only the chorus, a few artists have recorded this song using one or both of the verses (although there are some variations in wording). Wildcat Kelly, looking might pale Was standing by the Sheriff s side And when the Sheriff said I am sending you to jail, Wildcat raised his head and cried: (chorus) Wild Cat Kelly back again in town, Was sitting by his sweetheart s side, And when his sweetheart said, Come let s settle down. Wildcat raised his head and cried: In the 1945 movie Don t Fence Me In starring Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, the Sons of the Pioneers, and of course Trigger, Wildcat Kelly is played by Gabby Hayes. Songs in the movie included the title song, Along the Navajo Trail, Tumbling Tumbleweeds, The Last Roundup, 6 Choo-Choo Polka, My Little Buckaroo, and A Kiss Goodnight. On August 5 the Grim Reaper worked for two days to take me away but on August 7 the good Lord said I still have work to do here and snatched me back. To all of the Country Lovers who kept me in their thoughts and prayers, thank you. Thank you to the Country Lovers Hospitality committee for the great soup mug and flowers. That works for me as I am on soft foods for awhile. Soup, jello, oatmeal, cottage cheese, Yummm. Any suggestions to this soft food diet will be appreciated. My most sincere thanks go to all of the people who offered to donate blood. You are just amazing and that is such a wonderful gift. I have an odd blood type, A+. The hospital had 5 pints and I took 4 of them. So I really lucked out there. Please remember that the gift of blood truly is the gift of life. I really missed going to the Fair Parade this year. I have only missed one other time. I extend my Congratulations to all of you who made the float and brought Country Lovers another first place trophy. Yipeee! I will be there next year ready to smile and wave. I hope all of you will give my Jesse a hug. He has been through a lot during this time. He looked a little green in the hospital a few times. He has been my cook, driver, errand runner, pillow fluffer, and dog walker. And best off all he has been my best friend. The Country Lovers are truly a great family. I heard from Country Lovers stretched out around the country and Hawaii. Little things mean a lot. Country Lovers provides those little touches. I am very blessed to know all of you. I will see you soon. Linda Wilson
