The Mail Boxer April 2011 BMW MOA #7 BMWRA #5 This is a reminder for everyone that next month at the April breakfast meeting we will have a vote for the next breakfast meeting place The choices are (1) stay at the Hilltop or (2) The Dry Bean on Verona Rd. There have not been any other suggestions. The Wild Goose ride to Beaver Dam led by Tom Van Horn is taking place on April 17. Tom will organize tickets for the club. He will be departing Madison Moto Sports around 9:15 on April 17th. Here s something for my personal for sale column. A Tour Master electric vest size x-lrg ($100.00) and a Tourmaster coat XL ($100.00). Call or me It seems we might have a race for the President s office this fall. Bill Jutz said he was going run for the office. Start up the rumor mill and start looking for political backing ($$$$$)lots of it. The Prez The Prez Says By Dick Oleson Upcoming Events Sunday, April 3, 2011: Club Breakfast Hilltop Restaurant doors open at 9:00 am Sunday, April 17, 2011 Wild Goose Run Departing Madison Motorsports around 9 to 9:15 am See TVH for tickets and details April 30, May 1, 2011 Pecatonica Swap Meet April 30, AM Airhead Tech Day at Jeff Trapps home 2540 Upham St, Madison WI Sunday, May 1, 2011: Club Breakfast Hilltop Restaurant doors open at 9:00 am followed by the > Sunday, May 1, 2011: Slimey Crud Run Pine Bluff, WI to Leland, WI Friday May 20 to Sunday May 22, 2011 Madison Club GR-3 Soldiers Grove, Wi Need I say more! 2 July 21-27, 2011 BMW MOA Rally Bloomsburg Fairgrounds Bloomsburg, PA Sept 30 to Oct 2, 2011 BMW MOA Weekend Getaway Cranberry Lodge 319 Wittig Rd, Tomah, WI from an anonymous source It's almost time to go riding again (Yes, I know Bill, you have been riding all winter long). My shop has been a hot bed of activity with all the fluid changes, tire checks, brake adjustments, valve setting, carb balancing and such. The side hack has a new industrial look and new brake lines and master cylinder and soon it will have a remote oil filter. Thanks for the heads up Bert. The 800GS is starting to show it's farkels...lovely. I rode last Saturday before the weather took a dump again. Good thing I remembered to change out the winter air in the tires. Speaking of rides, I was sent an updated photo of Todd's farkels on his new bike. Todd, I just love what you have done to this cycle...can't wait to see it at the GR3. Madison BMW Club P.O. Box 152 McFarland, WI President: Dick Olson president@madisonbmwclub.org Secretary: Roland Thompson roland.d.thompson@charter.net Membership: Jim Low membership@madisonbmwclub. org Treasurer: John Ong Newsletter Editor: Sam Garst guanocave@earthlink.net editor@madisonbmwclub.org Rally Chairs Jim Harms Jim Low rally@madisonbmw.org Activities Directors: Tom Schirz Bert Hefty activities@madisonbmwclub.org April 17, 2011 : 27th Wild Goose Run Join us on Sunday April 17, at noon when the Wisconsin area clubs will meet at Bayside Supper Club (W9231 County Road G, Beaver Dam, WI ) for brunch & festivities. South of Beaver Dam take Hwy 151 Exit 129 (which is Business 151) for 0.7 miles turn left at Kwik Trip. $11.00/person includes gourmet meal, tax, tip, trophies & door prizes. Advance ticket buyers have reserved seats with their club - I m planning to get tickets for us as usual. $11 apiece. Let me know at the April meeting or I ll lead a ride up - Leaving Madison Motorsports around 9-9:15ish on the 17th......TVH
USELESS FODDER By Tom Van Horn Oookay. Dog pictures. Yawl wanna read about motorcycling, eh? I ll share my recent perceptions (that won t take long...). Ven I am done, you vill be begging for ze dog pictures, bwa ha ha... (BTW, this is Emmy) The season is coming - It was 60 degrees here yesterday, Rolled the sidecar rig out (okay, I needed to put some lumber away, but I did roll it out, okay?), and the rear tire was dead flat. Hmm. Last ran it on New Years Day. Aired it back up and I will keep an eye on it. So, does anybody (else) here need reminding that our bikes require a checking over each season? <Insert righteous finger wagging HERE>...Aah, it s a nice day, it ll be alright... I hope so....and what about us? Unless you ve been riding regularly in some warmsouthern clime (in which case I DON T hear about it :-), we re also in need of a tune-up. Maybe find a large nonsandy, non-gritty lot and try a few turns - You ARE turning your head and looking that way, right? Reacquaint your self with your brakes - do a few serious stops to regain your feel, and if the brake fluid got a bit bubbly over the winter, here s the place to find out, not out among the phoners and txt ers And speaking of The Season, one of our early activities is the Wild Goose Run, this year on 4/17. It s again at the Bayside Supper Club on the south end of Beaver Dam Lake. Each club sits together if we get advance tickets. Let me know if you want one. $11 a head. I ll lead a ride up from Madison Motorsports, leaving just after 9:00... The Slimey Crud Run is May first, GR/3 a couple weeks later. Hey, got any door prizes to chip in? ;-) TVH?
Secretary s Report by Roland Thompson Madison BMW Club March meeting minutes The March meeting was held March 6 th at the Hilltop Inn and called to order by President Dick Olson at about 10:00. Three guests attended and were introduced. We also have a new member, Perry Browkow, who rides an R1100RT. Welcome, Perry! We discussed the following items: 1. The Pecatonica Swap Meet this year is April 30 & May 1, the same weekend as Slimey Crud and our May meeting. A vote was taken and the decision was to leave our May meeting date on May 1 at the Hilltop Inn. It would be too complicated to move the meeting date. People will have to decide on whether to do one or the other on Sunday May The annual Wild Goose Run is April 17 and Tom Van Horn will lead a ride leaving from Madison Motorsports at 9:00 AM. 3. A vote will be taken at the April meeting on whether to change the meeting venue to the Dry Bean. Research shows its about the same price and they are open to our meeting there and the food is pretty good. The first potential meeting there would be the June meeting. 4. Art Mischler gave us a report on the status of the new BMW 1600s. They have sold several pre-sells and the pre-sell program is now closed. He doesn t know if they will get any more later this year or not. Inventories of several models will be in short supply this year. 5. Todd Herbst will do some research into upgrading our PA system for the Rally with new speakers and maybe a microphone. Sam Hokin has offered use of his system, but we should be looking at alternatives if possible. Once Todd has the needed information, a vote will be taken on options and approval of funds if needed. 6. Jim Harms gave a rally update. Posters are now going out hither & yon to be displayed in motorcycle venues in the upper Midwest. Display ads will appear in the MOA and RA magazines in the April issues. Rally fees will remain the same, including $15 for members who volunteer to work at the rally. Mischlers BMW will provide funds for the coffee again this year. THANK YOU, ART! 7. President Olson reminded us of the dates for the MOA national rally July and the RA rally in Chippewa Falls, WI June 30-July 3. They re trying to get a side hack sub-rally going at RA, so take note sidecar people! The meeting adjourned at 10:25. Roland Thompson Secretary
Off Topic & In Focus By Todd Herbst It all started at last years GR3 Rally. Some guys from Iowa were camped by us, and one of them had a bike I had heard rumblings about, up to that point. I went over and talked to him about it. It was a Kawasaki Versys (The Off Topic part of the story). I hadn t seen one, and liked the funky look of it. The following day a bunch of us rally goers went to Richland Center for lunch, and after lunch Burt wanted to go to Vetesnik s to look at the Can-Ams. Well, guess what they had there, on sale, and fit me like a glove. I knew right away, poor Helga s (my 94 R1100RS) days were numbered. Well I couldn t wrangle the cash right away, but 2 month s later a co-worker saw a Versys on Craigslist. I talked to Betty and we decided that I couldn t pass this one $3500 w/3200 miles. But I ve already written about that part. Since July I ve put 4000 miles it and love this little bike, I had done a couple of trips on it, but mostly I just rode it to work. I was using an Ortlieb magnetic tankbag and Ortlieb soft sidebags when needed, but I had bigger plans for this bike. I ve been working on Betty since I got the bike to get the money for the final Farkles for my Versys and to really put it over the top. Last month, I finally accomplished that goal. And finally, In focus, my finished Versys. I bought a set of Zeta handgaurds with blinkers.
With the help of webbikeworld I found a really cool Famsa Tankbag Pannier set. These are made in Italy for the R1200GS, but this website tried them on their Versys and they fit perfect. I agree. And finally, the Coup de grâce. A set of Happy Trails Panniers. I ll let the picture speak for these. And The finished bike. I have about $ 4900 in it as you see it. Did I say I was done? I forgot, I want one (or 2) of those 52 billion decibel horns made by Stebel. And heated gloves, and....
