2 Guidance Announcements Sophomore Guidance Seminars are in full swing. During this quarter, they will be exploring their personality traits and identifying potential career paths, building a resume, and learning how standardized tests play a role in their college acceptances. On Thursday, November 30 in the Cobb Theatre the guidance department will be putting on a program titled, Affording College: Strategies for Everyone. This presentation is geared toward freshman and sophomore parents who are looking to get information on various ways to make college more affordable. In The Classroom NAHS - Physical Education PE Classes just concluded its most popular unit Pickleball. This lifetime activity has grown in popularity across the country. North Attleboro has been conducting this unit for over 20 years. Students play with a doubles partner in a tournament style setting in games to 11 points. The sport involves hand-eye coordination and quick reaction time. Many students become quite efficient at the game. The highest-level players are able to use a multitude of shots to keep their opponents offguard. Joseph Martin Day in the NAHS Library November 3, 2017 was the first Joseph Martin day in North Attleborough and it was celebrated in the library at the NAHS. The Joe Martin Room is a meeting room right off the library and is used for seminar classes, special meetings, and testing. On Martin s special day, pictures, ephemera, and primary sources were put out for students to peruse. They were showed the binder that he used at the 1960 Republican Convention, a license plate from a 1965 inauguration, one of his spats from WWI, and his letter from General Douglas MacArthur that eventually led to the general s dismissal. Some students had not even realized that the room even existed, many had never been in it and hardly anyone knew who it was named after. Now, after touring the room, students know a major piece of North Attleborough history. 2

3 On Monday, November 6, the chemistry and biotechnology students from Mr. Burgess, Mrs. DiModica s, Ms. Mullaugh s, Mr. Murphy s, and Mr. Thornton s classes where privileged to have the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Chemistry Department perform several chemical demonstrations for the students. The chemical demonstrations included: Oscillation Clock Reaction An oscillating reaction occurs in which different states of iodine cause the accompanying color changes. Acid-Base Indicator from Cabbage Extract We extract a natural acid-base indicator from red cabbage and use it to test whether common household items are acids or bases. Synthesis of Nylon 610 We make synthetic nylon by combining the two parent monomers, a bis-acid chloride and a bis-amine. Collapsible Gel A crosslinked network polymer swells by absorbing 100 times its weight in water, then expels the water when the network collapses. Light and Chemistry The idea behind this demonstration is to show that light can be generated in at least three ways, all chemical in nature, and different from the way that traditional light sources work. Temperature An introduction to the concept of temperature involving dry ice and liquid nitrogen. Much to the delight of the students, liquid nitrogen was part of the temperature segment. Some students were lucky participants in the presentations, as seen in some of the pictures. Students in Ms. Montagna s Earth Science classes recently modeled volcanoes after real-life geographical structures as part of their research project. 4 Rocketeer Update: Pictured below are three recent student athletes who signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in college in their respective sports. Pictured left to right are Nick Sinacola (UMaine), Morgan Ashworth (Assumption), and Angela Kaiser (Sacred Heart). In the Classroom: NAHS recently hired a new boys hockey coach. Coach Bob McManama joins NAHS having coached the River Rats to a state championship in Coach McManama played college hockey for Boston College as well as Union College over the course of his career. We are happy and excited to have him join Big Red! The NAHS game day cheer squad recently took first place in the state competition! Pictured is the team with their championship trophy at the competition! The girls soccer team were the recipients of the MIAA sportsmanship award for the work they did collecting canned food during their season. Each member of each team donated food for every win this season. Congrats to the team on a great season and well deserved award. The football team recently won the Division 3 South Championship and Eastern Mass Championship! They will play at Gillete Stadium on Friday, December 1 at 5:00pm to try and win a State Championship! 5 Clubs and Activities: Debate Club: The Debate Club's leaders and some members will be going to the Middle School to work with students there to establish their own debate club. The high school's members will show the Middle School kids how it's done and give them pointers on what to do. They'll meet with Matt Lacasse and his kids on Nov. 29 after school. National Honor Society: Every year, the National Honor Society hosts a large Holiday Craft Fair in November. Admission for shoppers is free, but the NHS members help with a raffle basket table as well as a light refreshments stand. All proceeds from the raffle ticket sales and snack sales go to Lenore's Food Pantry. This year, the students raised the most money in years--$6 shy of $700!!!! The people at Lenore's Pantry were very appreciative of the large donation! Picture are some of the NHS officers presenting the donation. Student Council: To honor Breast Cancer Awareness month, this October the NAHS Student Council raised funds that went toward the purchasing of care packages for breast cancer patients at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Through the generous donations of staff and students, the student council was able to help purchase, package up, and send off 25 care packages to patients bravely undergoing treatment. 5

6 North Attleboro High School Food Services: A recent poll was conducted through Twitter to help determine the type of food station to be offered at NAHS. The new station will be a Mexican station! Monday s will still feature the ever popular Pasta Station in the main food line as well. Boosters and More: 8th Grade Open House: The 8 th graders of NAMS recently visited NAHS and were presented with a short video that highlighted many of the great things going on here at the high school. Each student heard from current NAHS students who talked about the positive experiences they have had so far during their time at NAHS. The 8 th graders then attended an activities fair in the cafeteria where they were able to walk around and see all of the clubs, activities, and athletics we have to offer. We are excited to welcome the class of 2022 when they arrive next year! NAHS Lacrosse Boosters: The NAHS Lacrosse Boosters are running their TDA (Teachers Driving Academy) fundraiser again this year! 7 NAHS Friends of Music: It happens every year after Thanksgiving... we get ALL-TURKEYed-OUT! So... order pizza from Big Red Pizzeria on Wednesday, November 29th and support NAHS Music! Do you need holiday stocking stuffers or gifts? Shop at Five Below from Saturday, December 2nd through Friday, December 8th and you will bring some holiday cheer to NAHS Music too! If you present the included flyers on the stated dates, the NAHS music program receives 10% of the proceeds from your purchases! See the flyer on the last page of the newsletter. Lastly, but most importantly, we would like to say, "THANK YOU!", especially to everyone who ordered poinsettias, donated to our Savers drive and supported our leaf raking fundraisers!
