1 State Conference 2013 Preview! Hey Minnesota FCCLA Happy FCCLA Week! We re very excited to unveil our State Conference plans for the year. Returning aspects of state include the Service Parade, Fitness Fever activities, the 7-up Highlighter Party, and Academy Awards Friday evening. An exciting agenda, for sure and we also have some new state events! The Talent, Lip Sync and Dance Showcase are being combined this year FCCLA s Got Talent! Also new this year are Minute to Win It competitions randomly spread out throughout the conference, led by state officer Ethan Dressen. And: make sure to ask your Region s officer team about their year in the Ultimate Leadership Experience, showcased through Minnesota FCCLA s new Honor Roll system. Most prominently, however, is the introduction of Rachel s Challenge at State this year for more information on Rachel s Challenge, check out page two of The Horizon! Thank you for being a part of Minnesota FCCLA s amazing initiatives this year. We can t wait to see everybody at state in April! Good luck with service projects, STAR Events, and other activities in the coming months. See you soon Tayler, Ethan, Sarah, Skylar, Olivia, and Kelly isucceed in STAR Events! STAR Events and State Conference are quickly approaching, and we cannot wait to see all your projects in April! STAR Event sessions are categorized in a slightly different way this year, making space for the Rachel s Challenge general session Friday Morning. There will also be a greater diversity in judges each event will have an expert judge and a student or alumni member. A committee has been dedicated to finding judges for your project, so prepare to impress! Traditionally, we will host our Academy Awards Friday evening with STAR Event Awards in gold, silver and bronze categories. National advancers attend a meeting Saturday morning to secure a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. Get excited to Raise Your Voice in July, but more pressingly isucceed in April! Good luck with STAR Events! INDEX: 1 Friday Summit 2 Fitness Fever 3 Silent Auction 4 Officer Elections 5 Deadlines 6
2 Friday Summit Rachel s Challenge You Just May Start a Chain Reaction I will not be labeled as average. Rachel Joy Scott believed in an essence of kindness and compassion, and that these two attributes had the potential to start a chain reaction of the same. Craig Scott, Rachel s brother, survived the Columbine shooting his sister fell victim to, and will share his story with Minnesota FCCLA. Craig has been a sought-after speaker for schools, assemblies and TV guest appearances. He limits his speaking schedule so we are very fortunate to have him confirmed for state conference Following the shootings in Colorado and Connecticut, Craig was often interviewed by NBC, and other TV news broadcasts. Rachel s Challenge will partner with Minnesota FCCLA and the STOP the Violence National Program to help impact bullying, accepting others and to use your positive leadership. Be the first to start that chain reaction of compassion. Tell your loved ones that you care about them and love them deeply. Be a courteous, helpful, and forgiving leader. Steer away from rumors and gossip, no matter how tempting it may seem. Reach out to people you normally wouldn't reach out to, and find ways to make their day just a little bit better. Encourage your friends, peers, colleagues, coworkers, and family members to accept Rachel's Challenge and spread the compassion and kindness. Chapters will receive more instructions about how to prepare for the summit in March keep an eye out for activities including chain links, a wall of hands, and Friends of Rachel chapters. Our initiatives in peer-to-peer education works toward the prevention of bullying inspired by Rachel herself and FCCLA s National Program STOP the Violence. Workshop Trainings at State Conference This year, there is a change in organizing students for training and speaker sessions. Instead of your advisor signing students up with registration forms, delegates will attend workshops based on their grade in school. Meet other members your age from across the state of Minnesota and learn about how you can make your time in The Ultimate Leadership Experience even more rewarding! Some of the workshop include: Inspiration from Tragedy- Distracted Driving, Never Work a Day in Your Life!, Start Your March, The End of Bullying Begins with You, Leadership 101, Rachel s Challenge, and isucceed in the NFL. 2
3 Fitness Fever & Minute to Win It isucceed in Minute to Win it! Throughout state conference this year, enjoy random contests of Minute to Win It! What can you accomplish in sixty seconds? FCCLA members have lots of hidden talent and, now, an opportunity to succeed! On Thursday, from 2:30 to 3:30 in the afternoon, there will be a station set up in the Grand Ballroom Foyer to kick-start the activities. At Region Meetings on Thursday night, chapters will appoint delegates to participate in the next sixty-second round. Two contestants from each region will advance to the Minute to Win It tournament held Friday Night. What region will take home the coveted timeless prize? Start practicing those hidden talents now and prepare to succeed! Global Youth Service Day with Minnesota FCCLA Fitness Fever! Take the elevator, or take the stairs? How about Zumba? Dancing? Make healthy choices this year at state with the returning Fitness Fever activities!! Using FCCLA s national Program Student B o d y, m e m b e r s a r e encouraged to get involved with some healthy competition throughout the weekend. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to promote our national program while working together and having fun. If you have any questions, make sure to ask Tayler Marshall, leading the activities with her Region Secretaries. Minnesota FCCLA is the Lead State Agency for Global Youth Service Day. This event celebrates and mobilizes millions of youth worldwide who aspire to improve their communities through service. Be a part of the largest service event in the world the only day of service dedicated to youth. Minnesota FCCLA is proud to partner with Youth Service America in this initiative and is bringing the excitement to state again this year. Chapters have the opportunity to create an artfoam poster board to represent various service projects you have done throughout the year. The posters will be displayed throughout the conference, and showcased with the Service Parade during Thursday s Opening General Session led by Vice President of Community Service Sarah Hamlin, of course! Be a part of the service celebration this April. 3
4 7-Up Celebration Highlighter Style! Silent Auction & FCCLA s Got Talent If you chapter has increased membership by 7 more members, you ve already completed the 7-Up Challenge! The Thursday night dance starts at 10:30, where members will be given highlighters to decorate t-shirts with make sure to bring your own white t-shirt! Also remember the dress code: white t- shirt with black or khai slacks. (No tank tops or flip flops, please.) Get excited for black lights, music, and members at our exclusive 7-Up Highlighter Party!! (For more information, contact Wendy Ambrose or Shelly Barrett.) Give a Hoot! Got Good Loot?! State Conference is rapidly approaching. Do you have good loot to donate? We are asking your help in collecting items for a great fundraiser that helps fund activities throughout the year. To get enough funding, we are asking each chapter to donate at least one theme basket or item. These could include movie night, music, snacks, gardening, baking, sports, or anything you think would appeal to delegates and adults. Additionally, there will be another way for you to help the silent auction be a success we will once again be holding our media sale! Members can donate any gently used books, movies, or games to be sold in the media sale. We will also accept artwork from members of you chapter or community. Pieces of art can be paintings, drawings, sculptures, needlework, or any other piece of creativity. Baskets, art, and media sale items should be brought to registration at the state conference. All donations are appreciated but please remember, all basket and media sale items must be appropriate so no R rated movies or music! If you have questions, contact Ethan Dressen or Sandy LaGosh. Dance, Talent, and Lip Sync Extravaganza! Does your chapter have fun with lip-syncs? Can you bust a move? Is juggling, performing magic tricks or joke telling your forte? Everyone s heard of America s Got Talent, but this year it s coming to Minnesota! Contestants will compete for the metaphorical top prize of one million dollars and a Las Vegas Spotlight after advancing from the regional level, of course. Minnesota FCCLA will host the ultimate showcase of singers, dancers, lip-syncs, musicians, comedians and other acts in our new initiative: FCCLA s Got Talent. Want to participate?
