Welcome to the Autumn Northern newsletter. I can t believe it s nearly the end of the Summer (what Summer?!). It really makes a difference! BD WEBSITE The frustration of the BD website is OVER The site is now fully operational! Yippee! You can now access all current British Dressage schedules on line. Go onto the BD website click on competitions, then schedules and then click on the equine affairs link. Check out all the new things you can do online! Lucy Bulmer Lucy has ridden since she was a child and thoroughly enjoyed competing in the Pony Club, often representing her branch at the National Championships in Dressage, Show-Jumping and Eventing. She decided to specialize in dressage after spending a year working in Germany when she was 18. When she returned home she applied the same training methods, learnt in Germany, to her Pony Club Eventer The BFG and was thrilled to progress to Advanced level with him. Since then Lucy bought a Dutch Warmblood, Opsylon (Wolfie) by Wolfgang as an unbroken three-year-old. Training him has been a massive learning curve for Lucy, as he can be exuberant (an understatement!) In spite of his talent, she has had continual problems with his spooking and tension, especially in a competition environment. Now 11, Opsylon is working at Advanced Medium level, he qualified and competed at the last three National Championships. Lucy and Opsylon won the Advanced Medium Northern Regional Championship last month! Last to go in a very strong class, Opsylon was brilliant and every judge had him in first position on a great score of 70.96%. One judge wrote A pleasure to judge both horse and rider! So they have qualified for the National Championships at Stoneleigh! Lucy has other horses coming up the levels. Ssaab, Rockefeler and Boras. Lucy is quick to mention her Mum (unpaid and long suffering groom) and Mary McGowan (supportive and selfless owner), when talking about her success so far. She has trained with Sue Richie and more recently Jane Bartle Wilson for her specialist dressage training. Lucy describes Jane as a perfectionist with a wicked sense of humour! So Good Luck at the Nationals to Lucy and to any of you who are also competing there! Enjoy!

4 Do you know a rider that would like to do 5 minutes with.? (This newsletter is the second newsletter to do 5 minutes with a Northern rider! ) 5 minutes with Lucy Bulmer How/when did you start riding? My cousin (Event rider Julie Lawson) passed on little fat Peter Pony to my sister and I when I was about 5. He was very naughty but great to learn on. What have been your high points so far? Watching the World Cup in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. The atmosphere was fantastic; it s wild out there! And low points? Selling my car to buy my latest beast I hope he s worth it! What do you like the most about riding/horses? I like that they teach me more than I could ever teach them. Dislike? Winter; chilblains on your thighs is never a good look! Name your favourite horse to date and why? My favourite pony was Bimbo who was from HAPPA we jumped anything that got in our way! My favourite horse has to be Wolfie (Opsylon); he is such a character. If you could ride any horse which one would it be? The late Pinnocchio. My mum took us to see the pantomime at Yorkshire Riding Centre every Christmas for years and I was in awe of him and Jane; I was amazed by his piaffe even before I knew what it was! I love to hear Jane s stories about him now. Which rider do you most admire? Jane Bartle-Wilson Who would you most like to have a lesson with? A top show-jumper, sometimes I miss the buzz of big fences and it would be nice to check I haven t lost my bottle! What future plans with horses have you got? To one day earn enough money to get some help, instead of being groom, rider and trainer. Finally, share a funny moment with us something that made you laugh! I fell off Wolf (just for a change) at a competition at Fry s a few years ago. He did two wild laps of the field before I lost sight of him. I dragged myself up and searched the lorry park only to discover he had loaded himself in someone else s horsebox!! I was tempted to leave him there, but on reflection thought I d better knock on their cab door and politely ask if it was OK if I removed my horse from their lorry. How contrary it usually takes two lunge lines and a trail of carrots to get him anywhere near a horsebox!

Due to unforeseen events the October camp can now only run for 2 days - Thursday 25th and Friday 26th. The 3 day camp will have to wait until Easter. The International Trainers Club is doing a demonstration at Addington Manor EC on Saturday 27th, so I thought we could organise a trip down there for the older members we re trying to get a group rate and will give you info asap. 8 ADVERTISING IN NORTHERN E-NEWSLETTERS At our last committee meeting we decided that we are going to start offering regional advertising in our Northern e-newsletters. Several of you have contacted me and are keen to advertise! We will advertise regional business and services but not trainers as the BD database and magazine does this. This will be at 4 times a year (Winter / Spring / Summer and Autumn) - (some additional updates may come out in between). I have 600 contacts and this is constantly growing. Some people receive duplicate s because they are in more then 'one group' but these can just be deleted as there's no way round it. The cost will be 20 per advert per newsletter. The advert will be 1/4 page (A4). To be included in the next newsletter (WINTER) the ad and cheque need to be sent to Chrissie by 16/11/07.
