1 December 2017 St. Brieux School Newsletter Principal s Message - Mr. Casavant Student Led Conferences/Parent Teacher Interviews were held on Thursday, November 23 rd and based upon the number of students and parents that turned out, it proved to be a great night. If you have questions about student progress, social skills or work habits do not hesitate to phone your children s teachers. Basketball season has now started and we have 5 teams competing in various leagues and tournaments representing our school. Please watch our school website for their schedules. We are having multiple Social Media presentations in the school for our grades 7-12 students on December 11 th in an attempt to ensure that our students are good social media citizens. The snow is here and Christmas is right around the corner. Our Christmas Concert is set for Thursday, December 21 st at 6:30pm. Please arrive early as it was a full house last year. December 22 nd is our last day of school and so we will be dismissing the busses at 2:15pm. January Departmental Grade 12 Exams are scheduled between January Here s wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Mr. Casavant

Here we are December and time continues to fly in our classroom. In ELA, we are working on a unit called, Celebrate Traditions, which is perfect timing as we prepare for the Christmas season. In this unit, students will read texts that provide information and descriptions about different celebrations enjoyed by many people across Canada, such as Canada Day, Aboriginal Solidarity Day, Remembrance Day, Kwanzaa and Chinese New Year. We will also work on Visualizing and Making Predictions as we read. We will take a close look at titles and headings and learn how they help us understand what we are reading. In Math, we just started Unit 3: Addition and Subtraction to 18. In this unit, we learn strategies for adding and subtracting with and without manipulatives. We learn how to create and solve problems that involve addition and subtraction. We will also learn mental math strategies such as doubles, making 10, one more, one less, two more, two less and adding 0. In Arts Education, we are learning a few songs for the Christmas Concert later this month. We are having a blast learning the words to these new songs. Thank you for the continued support from home. It makes all the difference in your child s education! Continue to check Seesaw to see what s happening in our classroom. We try to post something new each week and we love hearing from you. Happy Holidays! Upcoming Events
3 Grade 6 Mrs. Amanda Salmon We continue to be busy bees in the Grade 6 classroom! In math, we are finishing off our current unit, Understanding Number. Students have been learning how to use place value to represent numbers less than one thousandth, and how to multiply and divide decimals by a 1-digit number. In English Language Arts we are continuing with our Peace and Conflict unit. This unit focuses on resolving conflict, studying where conflict has and continues to occur in the world, and deciphering what role peace plays in our lives. As a class we have started to read the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The students are loving it and it is already the focus of many in-depth conversations! In science, we are working on our Understanding Electricity unit. One of the first lessons involved students being given the task of moving an empty pop can using just an inflated balloon (no touching allowed!) Our class did a great job and most students worked out that static electricity was the answer. There were some crazy hairstyles by the end of the lesson though! In Social Studies we are celebrating people and places, discovering how our natural environment influences our lives and how geography shapes a country. This has involved lots of fun activities including student interviews and class debates. The arguments put forward certainly created some lively discussions. As part of our Remembrance Day lessons, students wrote postcards to veterans in Saskatchewan thanking them for their services. These were also shared with parents on Seesaw. I was truly overwhelmed by the emotion expressed in their words. Great job class! Thanks again for your continued support. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. Stay warm out there!
