1 4-H Newsletter December/January 2015 The 2015 Ohio 4-H Conference will take place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Saturday, March 14, This event is designed to bring together 4-H volunteers and teens from across the State of Ohio. The objective of this event is to learn together and from each other in order to improve our abilities to deliver the Ohio 4-H Program to its members. We truly believe that these educational selections offer something for everyone, and have the ability to satisfy every taste and need. Nearly 150 sessions will be available to choose from! Who: All Ohio 4-H Teens & Volunteers are welcome to attend. When: Saturday, March 14, 2015 Where: Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio How do I sign-up? Contact the County Extension Office in January for more information. When is the deadline to register? February 9, 2015 How much does it cost? $20 for Morrow County Members and Volunteers ($35 out of County) All registrations postmarked after February 13th will be charged $35 and will not include the luncheon. 4-H Membership Eligibility Just a reminder and clarification on membership eligibility for 4-H members. * Youth may join the cloverbud program (Non Competitive) when they are in kindergarten and five years old as of January 1, * Youth may begin taking 4-H projects when they are 8 years old and in the 3 rd grade as of January 1, * The last year of 4-H eligibility is the year in which a youth turns 19 years old (example: if you turned 19 years old on July 12, 2014 your last year in 4-H was in 2014).

Contact Lee VanDyke at OHIO STATE FAIR TO REQUIRE DNA SUBMISSION AND ELECTRONIC IDENTIFICATION FOR ALL MARKET BEEF ANIMALS The Ohio State Fair Beef Department has adopted new protocols for identifying market beef animals beginning with the 2015 Fair, July 29 through August 9. These protocols include the use of an electronic identification (EID) ear tag that has a unique 15-digit number and a DNA sample that will be submitted for all market beef animals that exhibitors plan to enter in the 2015 Ohio State Fair Junior Market Beef show. The DNA collection will be in the form of a hair sample that will be submitted to the Ohio State Fair by January 15, 2015 to meet the ownership deadlines for market beef animals. Along with the DNA hair submission, each market animal s 15-digit EID tag must also be included on the DNA packet. DNA packets may be picked up at an exhibitor s local Ohio State University Extension Office or at any Ohio Cattlemen s Association (OCA) BEST sanctioned show prior to the January 15 deadline. Call to order these packets before pick up. The market beef exhibitors in the Buckeye state have set a tremendous precedent in their desire to be young stewards of the beef industry, said Ohio State Fair Beef Department Director Bill Tom. The decision to use a more modern means of technology for livestock verification was an easy one, because I am confident that the juniors and their families will make a seamless transition with the new DNA and EID requirement. Any market beef animal that is expected to be show at the Ohio State Fair that has a pre-existing EID tag, such as an RFID tag, will not need to have an additional EID

3 tag placed in the animal s ear for State Fair purposes. For example, if the calf was purchased from a breeder that already included a 15-digit RFID tag in the animal, or if the animal has been to an OCA BEST show where an EID tag was placed in its ear, a new tag is not needed. The animal s existing 15-digit identification number will also serve as the animal s Ohio State Fair identification number. Exhibitors of animals not shown at an OCA BEST sanctioned show should contact their county extension office for an EID tag and DNA Packet. Premiums have been paid, sale checks are being mailed, and the boards are working on revisions for If you have not turned in your Thank you note for your sale buyer, this still needs to be done. If you are not sure who your buyer is please give me a call and I will give you the information. Thank you to all sale supporters for another successful year! STEER weigh in will be December 6, 2014, from 9-11a.m., at the fairgrounds. All steers planning on coming to the 2015 fair MUST come to weigh in. If you are planning to also show this animal at State fair this year, please contact Becky Barker at the Extension Office, There is a new State mandated practice to be able to show this year at the state level. Dairy feeder give-a-way. You have until January 31, 2015 to sign up for the free dairy feeder. Winner will be drawn at the February Jr Fair Board meeting. You must never have carried a Bovine project to be eligible to enter. Winner will receive a Dairy feeder, 300 pounds of feed, and a gift certificate to PBS in Wooster. This is a great opportunity to carry a Bovine project. We would like to thank, Doug and Kim Gault of Mansfield, for sponsoring this. January 8th will find our Jr Fair queen in Columbus competing for Ohio Fairs' Queen, at the Ohio Fair Managers Convention. Taylor Clark will be representing Morrow County. Good Luck Taylor!
