1 ND FFA Roughrider Supported by the State Board for Career & Technical Education Going for the Gold by: Mikayla Young, Secretary North Dakota is ready for the New Year to begin! For this year s 101 Conference, your State Officers have decided to officially announce our theme. Drum roll please Going for Gold! All of our seminars and workshops will be centered on the concept of Going for Gold. One of the two colors off the FFA is corn gold which sparked the initial idea of this theme. This is a fitting theme with the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics is this year. Be prepared to watch your State FFA Officers compete for our individual and team gold medals. It will be one intense competition, competing in winter sports we invented. By our side you will see our special guest, past National Officer, Wiley Bailey. While our team competes in the Winter Olympics we quickly learn, it s not always about winning. We are ready to Go for the Gold during this 101 Conference by giving you an electrifying, memorable, and fun-filled time with your state officer team. We plan to boost your understanding of the importance of the journey and not the destination. Our workshops will challenge you to develop your teamwork, individuality, and, leadership skills. We look forward to seeing and meeting all of you! We hope you are as excited as we are. 2 Page 2 ND FFA Roughrider Fall CDE Events by Mikayla Young, Secretary This fall, many FFA members had the opportunity to prove their talents and abilities in a few different competitions. On September 20, students gathered in the town of New Salem, North Dakota to compete in the State Range CDE. This particular contest consists of judging the quality of land sites, as well as, identifying special range plants. The Hebron FFA Chapter came out on top with the high team award! The high individual was Wyatt Schulte of the Hebron FFA Chapter! Congratulations on bringing home top honors for both the high team and high individual awards! Then came District Leaderships. For details on District Leadership competitions see Katie s article on page 8. After District Leaderships, there was still one more task to complete before National Convention. North Dakota had to determine which parliamentary procedure team was going to represent our great state in Louisville, Kentucky! The State Parliamentary Procedure Event started bright and early October 16, with sixteen teams participating. All teams were ready to conduct an official meeting using parliamentary law and demonstrating Roberts Rule s of Order correctly. The teams competing were Beulah, Central Cass, Dickinson, Fessenden- Bowden, Finley- Sharon, Garrison, Kenmare, Killdeer, Kindred, Maddock A.S. Gibbons, Mandan, Max, Napoleon, Rugby, Williston, and Wishek. At this event we even had the honor of wishing Governor, Jack Dalrymple, a happy birthday. Now back to the competition. The sixteen teams were divided up into two pools, eight teams in each pool. Two teams advanced from each pool to the final four. Your state officers were excited to announce that for the first time in history five teams ended up advancing to the final round because there was a tie in one of the pools! The five teams that advanced to finals were Fessenden-Bowden, Kindred, Mandan, Napoleon, and Rugby! After an intense final round and much suspense, North Dakota named the top team to represent us at National Convention. This team was the Rugby FFA Chapter! They certainly earned it, and made our state proud in Louisville, Kentucky. In Louisville they earned a silver award! Congratulations to all the chapters who made it to the state event. We are now headed into the winter season, which means we have leadership conferences, Winter CDEs, National FFA Week, and more to look forward to! Your State FFA Officers are excited for the upcoming season! Rugby FFA Chapter, 2013 State Parliamentarian Winners

6 Page 6 ND FFA Roughrider Service at Winter Leadership Conference by Macey Isaacs, Parliamentarian At this upcoming Winter Leadership Conference, January 4-5, we have planned out the service projects that we will be completing. Yes, ND FFA, I said projects, we have planned two this year! That means we will have double the work to do and double the opportunity to serve our communities! We have scheduled two events because we know that ND FFA can fulfill the tasks of each service project! Our first venture is one that we have had in the past and are going to tackle again, and that is Project Linus! This organization gives blankets to children in crisis situations. Last year we tied a total of 150 blankets for Project Linus and this year we have raised the bar and will be tying the grand (but easily attainable) total of 250 blankets! We can do this ND FFA!!! All you have to do is bring your favorite pair of scissors and rush (no running with scissors) to WLC and get to cutting and tying! If everyone helps, we will be done in no time! The more the merrier! Our second opportunity to serve involves packaging food and snack items for those in our communities who are hungry. With this project we will be helping children and adults in ND and MN by packaging snack foods that are both healthy and filling. Again, if enough people help out with this project, we will be able to say FFA helped out in a great way! We can do it with the assistance of the bright and shining faces (and clean sanitary hands) of ND FFA members! We know we will all have a great time doing these service projects and you won t want to miss out on these exciting and memorable events at this year s WLC!!! So, come join the State Officer Team to tie blankets and package food on Saturday night at WLC just before the dance!!! You ll be lighter on your feet knowing that you helped ND FFA complete these awesome service projects!! See you there reeeeal soon!!! **************************************

7 Volume 31 :Issue 1 Page 7 Cooking with Chuck by Charles Steinberger, President Welcome to the new reoccurring column, Cooking with Chuck. This article discusses all my favorite recipes and some ideas for the upcoming celebrations this December. First lets talk about those left over Thanksgiving leftovers in what I call the Turkey Slam. For this recipe you need some bread, turkey, any holiday leftovers, and eggnog. 1. First you need to grab your bread of choice. You may prefer white bread but for this recipe you need pumpernickel or rye. You could toast it which would change the name to a Turkey Tomahawk. 2. Next you want to throw any holiday leftovers on. In my Turkey Slam I enjoy a nice layer of mashed potatoes, dressing, some green olives and some gravy. Make sure to get an even amount of each item. That way you don t have a weird gravy green olive taste in your mouth. 3. Finally, you re thinking about putting turkey on it, be careful when handling the knife. It may look dull, but nine out of ten times it is sharp. 4. Enjoy by taking three sips of eggnog for every bite of Turkey Slam. Christmas has to be my favorite time of the year. I don t know if it is my fascination with Bing Crosby s voice, seeing Santa Claus on every corner (boy he s fast for his age), or if it is the smell of lefse lofting through the house. This next recipe is not how to make lefse, but how to eat it with class. 1. The first step of this recipe is to get some lefse. You could buy it, but then you miss out on the great smell I referred to earlier. I recommend making some. I hear Beth and Mr. Aaron Anderson will lend you their great recipes. 2. After you have your beautiful lefse placed in front of you its time to melt the butter. You may think you have to heat it to 50 plus degrees. That s lutefisk; all you need to do is heat it to a nice 41 degrees. That makes it easy to spread and brings out the true butter taste. 3. After you spread your butter on the exquisite lefse; you need to sprinkle sugar, brown sugar, or cinnamon on the heavenly potato flat bread. Be wise and economize on the sugar, brown sugar, or cinnamon. If you sprinkle too much on it, you risk deteriorating the delicate flavor. 4. After the condiments are on the lefse comes the hard part. A recent poll shows that 49 percent of lefse eaters prefer the rolling technique, 49 percent prefer the folding technique, and still one percent prefers the Swan Origami technique. What ever your technique is; just enjoy your lefse. Christmas is the season of giving. All the TV commercials talk about is remembering that last gift for that special someone. They talk about diamonds, fancy sports cars like a Honda Odyssey, and fancy clothes from Target. This last recipe is one sure to melt that special someone s heart. 1. Go to the store and buy non-perishable food items and some gifts for a wide spread of ages. 2. After you have a vanload or so; you need to locate a donation site for all of these items. 3. After you have found a donation site, you need to tell your significant other you are taking her out to eat. Make sure the restaurant of your choice is close to the donation site. 4. When you drive over to the restaurant, pull up to the donation site and drop the food items and toys off. Just remember this Christmas to donate non-perishable food items and gifts to a local charity. These donations mean the most to a young child who can get a blanket and a mother who can create a holiday meal for history, and it brings the true meaning of Christmas to you. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am looking forward to 101 Conference, so I hope to see you there.

8 Page 8 ND FFA Roughrider District Leadership by Katie Vculek Vice President North Dakota FFA members kicked off the first FFA event of the school year with District Leaderships from September 30 th October 3 rd. ND FFA is divided into eight different districts. Williston, Minot, Rugby, Lakota, Wahpeton, Jamestown, Center, and Dickinson all hosted contests for their districts. The state officers and state staff split into two teams to cover the east and west half of the state. Steve Zimmerman (State Advisor), Mikayla Young (State Secretary), Katie Vculek (State Vice President), and Breanna Bregel (State Treasurer) all traveled east. Aaron Anderson (State Executive Secretary), Charles Steinberger (State President), Lincoln Christenson (State Reporter), Bryce Lynne (State Sentinel), and Macey Isaacs (State Parliamentarian) covered the West half of the state. There was much debate between the teams as to which half of the state was better, yet a conclusion could not be reached. FFA members attend District Leadership to gain speaking experience and FFA knowledge. There are contest opportunities for all ages. The 9 th grade members had an opportunity to compete in the Greenhand Quiz and the Creed Speaking Contest. 10 th graders could compete in the demonstration contest and parliamentary procedure, memorized public speaking, extemporaneous public speaking, job interview, senior quiz are open to members of all ages. The top two competitors in each contest advance to state competition in June. The state was privileged to host two national officers for District Leadership this year. Wiley Bailey, an Alabama native and the Southern Region Vice President, traveled with the team in the east side of the state. Each day Wiley spoke to the members about the importance of giving others your time, while enhancing his stories with his banjo pickin skills. Lindsey Anderson, the Western Region Vice President from California, traveled on the west side of the state. She presented a workshop that focused on communication. Her interactive approach was popular with the members. The State of North Dakota is extremely thankful these officers came to spend their time with us. The week provided a thrilling experience for members who made new friends, gained public speaking experience, and were recognized for their efforts. Congratulations to the members of ND FFA District Leadership
