Tuckshop Junior Athletics We would love some helpers at the Tuckshop tomorrow for Junior Athletics, as it is our busiest day of the year. Please call Tracy on , or see her in person on the day. It is a good day for a picnic lunch under the trees with your children. (Denise French P. &C. Manager) you can assist e News from 5S 5S have been using Edison robots in class to investigate light and movement in Science and Maths. We have been programming Edisons to track a light source and follow our commands, through block coding in a computer program and also by identifying barcodes. Everyone has loved having the new additions in our classroom. They help us learn coding and debugging when our program runs expectantly, but also the importance of working together in small groups and listening to other people ideas. We are investigating how light transfers through different objects in different ways, how our eye understands light, and how we read light. Our Bottley robot uses a remote control with infer red light to follow commands. We can't see the transfer of data so we have understood how messages pass through the air unseen like magic. We need to problem solve and rethink our code to get the correct movement and actions to complete tasks and this takes lots of team work. (Ailie-Marie Single) 5S hard at work Tournament of the Minds Well done to Eboni 3S, Mya 4S, Izrael 4R, Samuel 4R, Lucy 3S, Kalani 3S and Louisa 4S, for participating in the Regional Tournament of Minds at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Your performance and creative solutions to the challenges were well thought out and entertaining. Thank you for all the parent support. (Ms Lisa Marsh)

Vinnies Community Sleepout Thankyou On Thursday August , Charisse Berman and Myschel Albrecht represented Coolum State School in the Saint Vinnies Community Sleep-Out, to raise money for the homeless on the Sunshine Coast. Charisse and Myschel slept out with only a sleeping bag and some cardboard, along with approximately 120 other fundraisers. Charisse and Myschel raised $1872 and would love to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to parents, colleagues, family and friends for donating to this cause. Your donations will go a long way and are greatly appreciated. (Myschel and Charisse) Sports Update SEQ Soccer Championships at Ipswich On Friday August 24, our junior boys soccer team travelled to Western Pride Football Club in Ipswich to compete in the finals of the 2018 SEQ School Football Championships. Our first game of the day was against Patricks Road State School, which we won 2-0. We then came up against St Mary's for a chance to qualify for the Grand Final. The boys played brilliantly and won 5-1. In a nerve-wracking final that went to extra time, our boys emerged victorious winning 2-1 and being crowned SEQ Champions for 2018! I would like to commend the boys for their sportsmanship and behaviour, they certainly represented Coolum State School the right way. Also a big thank you to all parents and family who supported the boys across all stages of the competition. (Jason Quinn and Brodie Porter)

Cheerleading - AUSSIE GOLD State Spectacular (Coolum AllStarz) Last Sunday August 26, the Coolum AllStarz performed at The Aussie Gold State Spectacular. It was held at Logan Metro Sports Centre in Logan. Our amazing Coolum AllStarz competed and performed with such pride and confidence and absolutely shone on stage. Once again, they displayed such great sportsmanship and encouragement to other teams and competitors and this was recognised by the event coordinator, raising the profile and standard of our school yet again in the public eye. Not only was I one very proud coach taking away a team for the weekend, but the families and friends who came along to support the girls were extremely pleased with the results and positivity the girls radiated throughout the entirety of the competition. I feel honoured to be part of such a wonderful community and amazing school and to have this constantly recognised is a credit to our wonderful principal, staff, parents and students. The girls did extremely well and gained the points to take out first place in all categories. What an achievement, congratulations Coolum AllStarz!!!! 1 st place Pom 1 st place Jazz 1 st place Lyrical 1 st place Contemporary 1 st place Hip Hop LYRICAL HIP HOP POM Congratulations once again, Coolum AllStarz!! 5 Prep Tennis Racquets Our Prep students have received brand new tennis racquets, thanks to ANZ and Tennis Australia s School Partnership Program. ANZ s support of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program has ensured students in their first year of school at a Tennis Australia partner school receive a brand new tennis racquet, with an astonishing 80,000 taking up the opportunity since January Prep students were delighted to receive their racquets and enjoyed a quick Taste of Tennis trial lesson from our school Tennis Professional Jamie Fletcher. (Mr Moody) Hand washing for hygiene Find out how you can help to protect yourself from flu, e-coli, measles and other diseases. Germs are everywhere. We collect them, inhale them and share them, all day and every day. The flu, e-coli, measles and numerous debilitating diseases spread quickly through contact with surfaces and people - and it s our hands doing the dirty work. A 20 second hand washing routine could help make us all healthier. (Sharyn O Brien) See the flyer at the end of the newsletter Coolum Carnival Every donation you make contributes to the overall success of our event. As a way of showing our appreciation, everyone who brings in Carnival donations will go in the draw for Carnival Rewards, drawn weekly on parade, from 15 September. The more you contribute, the more chances you have to win Carnival Rewards. Donations can be dropped off at the P&C room or the library and weekly draw boxes can be found in the library. Random Draw Question: Name one of the pigs in the Pig Brother House.

(Ross Naumann) Child Protection Week September Child Protection Week is a national event held during the first week of September. Queensland Child Protection Week is co-ordinated by the Queensland Child Protection Week Committee. The week is launched with an awards ceremony recognising outstanding practice in child protection. Child Protection Week focuses attention on child protection being everyone s business. The responsibility lies with adults in keeping children safe from harm. All members of society need to play a part in ensuring children are nurtured and safe and ensuring that all, across Queensland communities take responsibility for children being protected and experiencing well-being. The child protection campaign runs all year, sharing key messages regarding child protection. The objectives of child protection week are to raise the awareness and profile of all issues connected with child protection, including child abuse prevention, treatment, research, education, service provision and support for children, young people and families. One of the key messages for child protection week is, listen to children and young people, this is crucial to their well-being and safety. Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing s going to get better it s not. - Dr Seuss Road Safety Week This week is Road Safety Week throughout Queensland. Please read the following as we all do our best to make roads safe for our students and all community members. Road Safety Week Get the facts about distractions On average 25 people are killed and 1235 seriously injured each year on Queensland roads as a result of crashes where driver distraction played a part. However, the true extent to which distractions (including mobile phones) contribute to road crashes is likely to be higher because drivers may not admit to police they were distracted at the time of the crash.

Using a mobile phone increases your risk of a crash by four times Driving is a task that requires all your attention. Using a mobile phone while driving especially texting is distracting and can lead to5: riskier decision making using a mobile phone while driving affects judgement and concentration slower reactions you generally have a slower reaction when using a mobile phone, particularly when you re deep in conversation. You may take longer to respond to traffic signals or completely miss them slower, less controlled braking during a mobile phone call, your brake reaction time is slower and you brake with more force and less control. This results in shorter stopping distances between you and the car in front not being alert to surroundings when using a mobile phone, we spend less time checking mirrors and what s going on around us. This affects our ability to monitor and negotiate traffic safely. The unexpected can happen at any time so even the smallest distraction can be deadly. Using a mobile phone when driving means taking your eyes and mind off the road which can have serious consequences. Even when your eyes are off the road for just two seconds, a vehicle moving at 60km/h travels more than 33 metres. The average person s time to react to an event is 1.8 seconds. This means nearly four seconds can pass before the average distracted driver can react to a hazard, increasing their risk of a serious crash. Even the smallest distraction can be deadly This table shows the distance travelled in two seconds by a driver at various speeds Distraction time Distance travelled Being distracted can be deadly Mobile phone use is one of the most common risky driving behaviours on the road. A 2018 survey of 3,000m Queensland drivers found: seventy percent of Queenslanders use their mobile phone illegally in the car texting is the most common behaviour, with forty-eight percent of drivers admitting to texting at traffic and twenty two percent of drivers saying they text while driving forty-six percent of drivers check , social media and the internet at traffic lights, and forty-two percent do so while driving Tips for staying focused on the roads Switch your phone to silent or flight mode as soon as you get behind the wheel. Let everyone know you re driving phone free and remove pressure to be in contact. Phone home before you leave work and check if you need to pick something up on the way home. If you re driving with passengers, designate a texter so you can concentrate on driving. Pull over and park safely before picking up your phone. Myth busters 40 km/h 22.2 metres 50 km/h 27.8 metres 60 km/h 33.3 metres 80 km/h 44.4 metres 100 km/h 55.6 metres Using my mobile phone isn t that dangerous The danger of using a phone while driving can t be underestimated. Research shows a driver s response time while texting on a phone is comparable to that of a driver with a blood alcohol reading of between 0.07 and Using a mobile phone while driving is distracting in many ways: physical a driver s hand is moved from the steering wheel to pick up the phone, answer or end the call, or type a message visual a driver s eyes are diverted from the road to look for the phone, view the buttons or read a message auditory caused when the driver s attention is drawn to the phone ringing or buzzing cognitive even the most experienced drivers have difficulty processing two or more pieces of information at the same time. Talking on a mobile phone while driving may cause lapses of attention, concentration and judgement. I can quickly check a text message when driving Text messaging while driving is especially dangerous9. It results in physical, visual, auditory and cognitive distraction which can mean: incorrect lane changes or swerving travelling at inconsistent speeds

missing road signs, hazards like dropped road edges or pedestrians, cyclists or road workers. Talking on a mobile phone while driving is the same as talking to a passenger Talking to a passenger is less distracting than talking on a mobile phone. If a dangerous situation develops, the passenger can stop talking to allow the driver to concentrate. It s safe to use my mobile phone while stopped in traffic or at traffic lights It s illegal to use a handheld mobile phone at any time while driving, unless you are safely and legally parked. Drivers are slower to react when using a mobile phone, taking longer to respond to traffic signals or missing them completely. You could also be tempted to continue to use your phone as you slow down to a stop in traffic or as you take off again. It s safer to avoid the temptation and keep your hands and eyes off your phone. I m a good driver so I can multitask A good driver concentrates on the road at all times because the unexpected like a pedestrian stepping out from behind a vehicle or cars quickly passing or merging can happen anywhere at any time. No matter how well we think we multitask, the performance of one task is hampered by the other.
