I m all packed and ready to head to Phoenix in an hour for another Quickie Race and I remembered I need to make a President s report for the January Contacts. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot going on. The weather has been awfully cold and snowy. So hopefully everyone is working on their winter projects. I thought the New Years Day Icicle Stick went good, lots of people there and the weather cooperated. I am still getting table requests for the Swap N Shop. Randy Cameron, our District VP from the AMA, wants to come and set up a 10 x 10 easel to pass out information about AMA. I told him to come on up and we would make room for him. Sorry this is so short and sweet. If the weather holds out I will be back for the meeting next week. Go Chiefs! SUPERMARINE SEAFIRE The Seafire F Mk III was the first true carrier adaptation of the Spitfire design. It was developed from the Seafire Mk IIC, but incorporated manually folding wings allowing more of these aircraft to be spotted on deck or in the hangers below. Supermarine devised a system of two straight chordwise folds; a b r e a k w a s i n t r o d u c e d immediately outboard of the wheel-wells from which the wing hinged upwards and slightly angled towards the fuselage. A second hinge at each wingtip joint allowed the tips to fold down (when the wings were folded the wingtips were folded outwards). 3 CONTACTS PAGE 3 MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER CLUB MEETING The December 21 st KCRC club meeting, held in the EAA Hanger at the Lee s Summit Airport, was called to order by President Duane Hulen at 7:03 P.M. The other officers present were Vice-President Jesse Casteel, Treasurer Bob Deskins, and Secretary John Midgorden. There were 25 members present. John Midgorden s son Barry was a visitor. OFFICER REPORTS President Duane asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the November 16 th meeting. The motion passed. Secretary Midgorden shared a Christmas Card the club received from the AMA. Midgorden mentioned that Ed Baucom was in a rehab center. Susan Calvin gave an update on Ed s health situation. John shared that he had sent Ed the list of members for name tags. But obviously Ed will not be able to follow through with getting them made. Susan volunteered to get the information from Ed regarding the vendor so someone else could arrange to have the name tags made. John also announced that Pat Masters had finished painting the flag pole and the frequency control stand and that he has been reimbursed for the cost of the paint. (Thanks Pat) Vice-President Jesse Casteel hand no input to share. Treasurer Bob Deskins brought the membership present up-to-date on the income and expenses for the club. Money is coming in from membership renewals and table rentals for the Swap N Shop event in February. OLD BUSINESS President Duane Hulen reported that he had over 30 tables sold for the Swap N Shop and encouraged the members to invite their friends to participate. Duane brought up the venue question regarding the Appreciation Dinner location. There was support for moving the date for the dinner to March 4 th when the church would be available. He also shared that Bob Deskins has several good ideas for a program that he and Bob are investigating. Duane also suggested that the Winter Projects Club meeting be changed to March, since the April meeting always conflicts with the QB activity at the hanger. There was no objection from those present Since Midgorden had ed everyone a copy of the updated Constitution and Bylaws after the November meeting the members present voted unanimously to accept the new document. Midgorden will clean up the document (taking out the cross outs and red text) and forward the final version to Craig White for incorporation into the website. Barb Carey brought the new club clothing to show and sell. There will be a listing of the clothing with prices in the next newsletter. NEW BUSINESS Richard Strickland requested that the club approve a Pattern Practice event for May 20 th. There were no objections, only that Jim Cianciolo will need to notify the park of the event. Several members volunteered to help with the event. Duane announced that the annual Icicle Fun Fly is on for January 1 st and encouraged several to bring chili and the camp stove to keep the chili hot. PROGRAM Midgorden showed the trailer and slide show from his 2016 move DVD entitled 2016 Fleming Flyers. This was followed by watching a short movie on how to use the Automatic External Defibrillator(AED) equipment now available at the EAA hanger. A PASSION FOR RACING Respectively submitted John Midgorden, Secretary Check out the Pylon Race article (Pages ) in the January Model Aviation magazine to see that our own President Duane Hulen is featured along with many other pylon racers. Duane took first place in the Q500 and Q40 races at the Mile High Challenge in Littleton, CO this past August. Congratulations Duane!

4 CONTACTS PAGE 4 SAFETY BRIEFING Christmas is over; sort-of. If you re anything like me (a truly scary thought) you spent a considerable amount of time decorating, outside and in. I spent a lot of time this past summer building 8 picket fence sections to go around my front yard. I hung lighted garland on my temporary fence and put a candy cane and a big red Christmas bow on each fence post. It is reminiscent of Christmases early in the 20 th century. I have lights and blow mold characters all over the front yard. There is a blow mold Santa sleigh and Reindeer on the roof, and I even created a series of lighted arches over my driveway. It s like driving through a lighted Christmas tunnel every time I get my car out. Needless to say, I ve received several very kind comments from my neighbors. (And Independence P&L loves me). It took a lot of effort to put all these decorations up. There are extension cords and electrical fittings all over the place. And I spent a lot of time climbing my ladder to put up icicle lights and the Santa sleigh. Naturally I spent a lot of time thinking about safety. No doubt all of us thought about safety during the Christmas season. It seems like all the news programs and other talking heads inundate us with thoughts of safety during December. But, what about the post- Christmas season? Referring to the old adage, What goes up must come down we now have to undo what we did. A potential problem here is that we may be going through a post-season let down. Not that we re experiencing any sort of depression, but that we re experiencing a lessening of tension. Put another way, we re more relaxed and perhaps less attentive to potential hazard as we get our lives back to normal. This is the time we should redouble our awareness of potential hazards. Because our weather is now more adverse it will be more difficult to take down our outdoor decorations. Things like climbing ladders and taking up electric wires will be more difficult. Dealing with ice and snow is an additional problem, as is unusually cold temperatures. One hundred years ago, when I was a kid, these things were no concern to me. Now that I m officially a Geezer (over the age of 60) I have to pay more attention to tripping hazards, frost bite, and back injuries. SUSAN CALVIN, SAFETY OFFICER go. At that time, just be careful. Don t be like the fellow in Germany who threw his tree out the third floor window but forgot to let go 1. He suffered severe head injury when he and the tree reached the ground at the same time. Basically, just maintain the same safety awareness you exercised when setting up for Christmas. You can begin to slack off after January when you start building that new plane you got. In closing I want to list some entertaining statistics about Christmas season accidents Three people die each year from testing a 9v battery on their tongue. 2. Five people were injured last year by R/C cars. 3. Nineteen people have died in the last 3 years believing Christmas decorations were chocolate. 4. Fifty eight people are injured each year by using sharp knives as screwdrivers. Keep smiling, but remember to keep a safety mindset just a little bit longer preferably at all times! 1. Your Editor received the photos below via an from Fred Hulen. Here is Fred s explanation: After seeing pictures and flying videos of my Spitfire MK14 John Britt got all fired up to buy one. But while he was looking he also discovered that FMS offered a 60" P51 of the same prototype that he modeled waaaay back when we hosted the Scale Masters here at our field. Looks like a great model especially when we consider that it's a foamie, and after he applies some of his attention to detail it will look terrific. Some of us who have been around KCRC for many years remember John Britt and his exceptional RC flying skills. Does this mean that John will be seen at the flying field soon? We hope so!
