1 Kansas City Radio Control Association AMA Charter No. 390 CONTACTS The Official Newsletter of KCRC March 2017 Volume LXIII, Issue III GREAT FOOD, FRIENDS, & PROGRAM AT APPRECIATION DINNER The annual Appreciation Dinner, although over a month later than usual, was another great time for KCRC members and their families to break bread together. Those of you who missed the dinner missed an interesting and joyful time. Thanks to Bob Deskins persistence with Whiteman Air Fore base, he was able to line up a speaker at the last minute. Captain Kelly Mahone came and shared her experience as a Predator drone pilot. She had a power point presentation and then answered a ton of questions. Obviously, she couldn t share much about the mission themselves. However, everyone present got a good idea of how piloting a drone in a Whiteman cockpit works with the aircraft somewhere else in the world. The food was wonderful and the beef brisket prepared by Darwin Ulledahl s son, Dan, was out of this world. The desert table alone was worth coming for. A major reason for the dinner is to honor club members who have served KCRC with distinction and commitment. This year s honorees were Craig White (President for the past two years) and Tom Safley (Treasurer for the past seven years). Instead of plaques, this year s honorees received gift certificates to use at Hobby Haven. Mr. KCRC, Marvin Lackamp, also received an anonymous cash gift. A special thanks to Bob Deskins who not only arranged for the wonderful program speaker, but arranging for all the gift cards and door prizes. With the gift cards, a generous supply of Marvin s blackberry preserves, bread and butter pickles donated by Anthony Sgaraglino, and copies of John Midgorden s 2016 DVD, everyone present received a door prize. 3 CONTACTS PAGE 3 MINUTES OF THE FEBRUARY CLUB MEETING The February 15 th KCRC club meeting, held in the EAA Hanger at the Lee s Summit Airport, was called to order by President Duane Hulen at 7:00 P.M. The other officers present were Vice-President Jesse Casteel, Treasurer Bob Deskins, and Secretary John Midgorden. There were 29 members present and one guest, Dennis Davis. OFFICER REPORTS President Duane asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the January 18 th meeting. The motion passed. He introduced visitor Dennis Davis who now has a trainer, but needs a radio. Secretary John mentioned that Susan Calvin had discovered the name of the vendor that Ed Baucom used to make the Club s name tags. John requested that those wanting a name tag check the list before leaving the meeting. Duane reminded everyone that the Club had decided a few months ago that these name tags will be paid by the Club. Jesse Casteel volunteered to handle this task of ordering and distributing the name tags for the Club.. John reported that the 2017 membership stands at 50 based on dues received during the meeting. John announced that he is working on the KCRC history that he volunteered to do. DVDs of the 2016 Fleming Flyers movie will be available at the annual Appreciation Dinner on Feb 4 th. John invited those wanting one to sign up on sheet for ordering the DVDs following the meeting. Vice-President Jesse Casteel asked about the Club s videos. Susan indicated that she has ed EAA members to see if anyone in the EAA Chapter remembers the person who was digitizing the Club s VHS videos. Treasurer Bob Deskins gave a detailed report on the Club s finances since the first of the year. Then he shared the results of the Swap N Shop event. The membership then approved taking some of the checking account money and secure two new CDs, one for $5,000 and one for $2,500. OLD BUSINESS Duane shared that he had placed chewing gum in a number of the mole holes at the field as an experiment and the results seem promising. Duane Hulen thanked all the workers that help make the Swap N Shop the best ever. He also mentioned a number of guys had signed up to get next year s flyers. He asked if there was anyone who would volunteer to develop a new more up-to-date mailing list. Tom Safley volunteered to make an up-to-date mailing list. Duane was asked to go ahead and secure the John Knox Pavilion for the first Saturday in February Duane also asked for $180 so he could order the fuel for the Spring Quickie Rave. He also noted that the dates for the race are wrong in the Contacts. The dates for the race are April 29 30, Bob Deskins brought up the issue of health permits for this summers events. Jimmy Cianciolo indicated that he and Bob would get together and arrange for the permits. Barb Carey talked about the Club clothing and mentioned that the new gray T-shirts are very popular. She was encouraged to purchase more clothing. She was commended for the good work she is doing handling the Club clothing. NEW BUSINESS Barb requested a check for $25 so she could sanction this year s 3-D event. She also indicated she is going to raise the entry fee to $30 and provide the Club with the extra $5. She also asked about providing a raffle plane for the event. A motion was offered that Barb be given a $200 budget to buy a raffle plane, motion passed. Richard Strickland talked about the April pattern training event and had flyers available for anyone interested. Duane asked for help regarding prizes for the Appreciation Dinner. He also announced that Whiteman Air Force Base is providing a guest speaker for the dinner. Susan brought up the fact that the AMA is asking that the AMA be the charity at the 2017 National Model Aviation Day. It was decided that we might wish to name some other charity and that it doesn t seem important to sanction this event. It was also agreed that this year s Warbird Event be named in honor of Ed Baucom, who recently passed away and who was a big Warbird fancier. SHOW AND TELL Richard Strickland showed his new 60 size electric pattern airplane and talked about its various features and price through Hobby King. 4 CONTACTS PAGE SAFETY BRIEFING SUSAN CALVIN, SAFETY OFFICER Most of us wear some form of bling in our daily lives. Some more than others. This has been a characteristic of humans for as far back as we can look. For those of us who like to peruse the Bible we can find many ancient references to all manner of jewelry, especially rings, necklaces, and bracelets. Personally, I like to keep the wearing of such things to a minimum. Anyone who has paid much attention to me has noticed that the only thing I wear is a small necklace. Why do I bring this up? It has a lot to do with my experience as an Army helicopter pilot. As you can imagine, helicopters have a great many moving parts. They have even been described as multiple thousands of spare parts flying in close formation. The Army was quite sensitive to this situation and spent considerable effort to remind us about the hazards of mixing jewelry with moving, and even some non-moving parts of our flying machines. This resulted in some very explicit and graphic posters that clearly showed what could happen to the careless aviator who tried to mix jewelry with aircraft. If you had a weak stomach some of these posters could cause a great deal of distress. I specifically remember color posters showing bloody fingers that had been cut off due to rings getting caught on a drive shaft. Or another poster graphically showed a metal shaving stuck in an eyeball. And necklaces could cause severe facial damage when grabbed by a drive shaft or some other rotating part of a rotor system. (Believe it or not, sometimes people actually got too close to the rotating parts of a rotor mast). This subject came to me the other day when I was considering all the tools I have at my disposal just to build a model. Some of my tools are powered, with rapidly rotating parts, but many are small hand tools. Any of them can cause injury when not properly used. The power tools are probably the most dangerous and the ones most likely to cause injury when mixed with jewelry. That, plus my experience in the military, is the reason I wear only a small necklace and that gets tucked under my clothing, or removed, when I m using power tools. (I really don t need to have my face divided in two when I m cutting something on my table saw). While power tools are the major factor in causing injuries when combined with jewelry, hand tools can be equally dangerous. Any jewelry that interferes with the use of a small tool can lead to cuts or smashed fingers. Consider that a ring or a bracelet may even contribute to electric shock when using small hand tools while doing electrical work. A little imagination can probably alert you to other hazards when working around your shop. Bottom line is, during the winter building season it will pay to consider how tools and jewelry can combine to mess up an otherwise good day. Be alert, consider how bling can work against you, and I hope to see you with all your fingers, toes, and pretty faces at the flying field. Ace Midgorden now has 6 midairs to his record. 4

5 CONTACTS PAGE 5 On February 21 st Darrel Kunard brought out his new electric powered SIG 4-Start for its maiden flight. Unfortunately, something amiss occurred on takeoff and the beautiful model was completely destroyed when it hit the ground going full throttle in a nose dive. In order to not make this anatomy any worse than it is for Darrel, I ve not shown the crash scene itself. I m sure most of us have had a similar experience with a maiden flight in our personal RC histories. Darrel, our hearts go out to you and we hope the crash investigation turns up something as a cause for this unfortunate happening. The photo to the left is Darrel s Four-Star prior to his fatal crash. Darrel maybe superstitious from now on and not have a photo taken prior to a maiden flight! I m beginning the task of writing the Story of KCRC. My plan is to complete this project in 2017 and submit it to AMA Headquarters for their club history archives. If you have old photos of KCRC members and activities that I could borrow for this project I would be grateful. Of particular interest would be the stories behind the photos. Therefore, it will work for all a seasoned pattern or aerobatic pilot or any RC pilot wanting to learn precision aerobatics or pattern flying. The Tentative Schedule All these activities are optional and will evolve as each pilot decides what he would like to do. 1. Judging seminar in the morning. Time and place will be provided later. 2. Coaching give and take from some of the top pattern flyers in the area. 3. Judging of practice flights or specific maneuvers and flight elements. 4. An introduction to, and hands on use of the electronic scribe scoring system. 5. Go to for maneuver/class descriptions and judging criteria (FYI: the more familiar you are with judging maneuvers, the better YOU will be critiquing your flying!) 6. More important. The main objective is to come and have fun with fellow pilots. Pattern practice is free.
